A very good reason for a run round the block.

Akaroa sounds like fun, just a bit worried about the cops being a public holiday. Safety in numbers though, right?

Akaroa ride is good - dont know how busy it will be on Show day. If riders behave then shouldnt be a problem with the:Police::Police:

Went to Little river on the last day of Labour weekend and the road was crazy full of caravans, campers and things towing boats coming back toward Christchurch.

My vote is Kaikoura inland route.
Akaroa would be insane on a public holiday with cages everywhere, leave that for the WNR.

Kaikoura has my vote as well.

I'm not a big fan of camper vans as well. Another vote for Kaikoura.

Are there many fuel stops on the way? I really don't want to go more than 200km without gassing up, and I'm hesitant to put fuel in from a small countryside petrol station with a low turnover that has fuck knows what in the underground tanks.

Christchurch - Kaikoura via Inland Route - petrol at Culverden (100 kms from Chc; about 110 kms Culverden - Kaikoura: I stand to be corrected on that).
Kaikoura - Christchurch - petrol at Cheviot, Amberley.

Do you know if they sell 95 octane? I could use 91 if I had to, but I'd prefer to avoid it.

Not a problem at all. The small town pumps still go through the gas and I've never struck a problem.

I seem to recall that they do - both are major re-fuelling trading posts in outback frontier Canterbury.
There's a list somewhere in the site of all such trading posts in the South Island. That, or acquire a large-tanked, fuel efficient, touring-capable motorcycle, as exemplified by Yamaha's TDM850.

Or get a fuel injected bike. I could probably reach Kaikoura on one tank... if I nana it... maybe...

You guys are joking with the fuel concerns right??
Christchurch to Kaikoura via the inland road is only 200km, don't think I've ever had a street legal bike that couldn't go that far. That would be a little bit sad.
Only about 170km back down SHW1.

Don't know what I'm up to yet, plan A involved Reefton and dirt but that may have been put off.
If I was sure to go I may have voted big block but Kaikoura would do.

I get about 300km to a tank and usually just top up at Culverden or Cheviot. Always a garage handy if you have a small tank.

The Block is my favourite ride but Kaikoura is great on a nice day.

I have never had any problems with fuel from the garages on a Kaikoura run. With high traffic flow the garages have a good turnover of fuel.

What/ where is "The Block"?

The block is a nice ride CHCH to Reefton to Greymouth to CHCH. Only about an 8 hour ride with a stop for lunch - but the big block is better.

What fuel consumption are you getting on the ZX10R? Since Roger tuned up my carbs nicely, it went from about 8L/100km to just a tad under 6 on the Akaroa GP riding sensibly most of the time.

On a 17l tank I get about 170-180 til the light comes on. Reserve hits around 13l mark so about 4l left in tank. On a good stretch of road riding I can squeeze upto 200kms from 13 litres. So that's about 6.5l per 100kms on a really good day.

Akaroa GP? Somewhere around 7.5 litres per 100kms on cruisy moderate pace.

Mind you, the bike is running with power commander tuned tad rich on bottom end of rev. I get better economy when riding over around mid/high range :innocent:

Exactly, spirited riding on the thou gets me about 210km, on the track about 160'ish. Not sure how far it'd go if I nana'ed it.

In 2010 and 2011 I did the MCC endurance races (Ruapuna) on an 09 675 Daytona, came 2nd both times, in 2011 was accidentally classified as Superbike, not 600, still came 2nd:doh:, be fair to say the throttle spent a lot of time on the stop!, longer races give you a chance to get a consistant average, on track the baby triple will do 119 kms to a full tank, in the real world before it became a race bike, it would do 260/280 depending on "spiritedness"

My Busa will do between 280 and 300 k depending on "spiritedness", hard use 2up doesn't seem to overly effect fuel use, as of next week will be on a new GSXR 1000, never ridden one on the road before, not sure what to expect, but my GSXR1000 Superbike used about the same fuel as the Daytona, works out to about 2 laps (Ruapuna) to a litre of 98, am hoping to get good mileage from it cause I like to do stuff like "round the block", and, god help me, the Akaroa GP!

Have to say it was a good day out. Forgot how much fun it was to ride with another busa, only saw one police car when we stopped in Amberley on our way home.
The weather was great once we got out of Christchurch.
Where was everyone else?
