View Full Version : Everyone's hands too tired to wave today?

I've just got back from a short ride on the Goose - up through Shannon, across to Opiki then back down through Himatangi and Foxton. Saw three bikes just south of Shannon, not a single one waved - not even the pillion. Saw three more north of Shannon - the guy on the cruiser/Harley was the only one to wave! Moved over to let a guy on a TXR pass - no acknowledgement. Saw several more bikes on the Opiki Road - a couple waved or nodded, but not all. A group of about 10 bikes pulled out from Himatangi Wines (can't remember its new name) ahead of me - but not even a wave when I passed them as they pulled into the Mobil in Foxton.

I waved to ALL of these riders and yet so few waved back, so what gives? It is a gorgeous day (albeit a tad cool) and there didn't seem to be any cops on the road, so why so grumpy? I can forgive people for not waving if they are cornering or turning, but I even waved to a guy as I pulled out to overtake and got nothing! Fellow riders, I'm VERY disappointed! :oi-grr:

yup, i notice that too...i generally wave, and rarely get a response. got waved to by a chick on a yama and a pair of harleys who passed me a week ago. been ewaved to once, but was unable to respond due to round about...and feel guilty for it too. rather sad that.

Go write it in your diary, and vow vengence on their selfish souls.

I live down a quiet country road, no noise or light pollution, but within 50kms of a city. There are great riding roads on my doorstep... tell me again why I would want to live in Auckland? Tell you what, move down here and we can start our own wave club! And we do have summer here, and lots less rain than you guys!

Very nice day for all

After my first ride down SH22 today, I was very tired concentrating on getting home in one piece, so I'll appoligise to the bikers I didn't wave to near bombay this afternoon.
First day out with other riders. Longest on the bike in one go.

Not this afternoon. Took the Whale down the motorway to my little experimental road after werk. Passed at least a couple of dozen riders going the other way, waved to them all. Not a repsonse, I was starting to think I had some sort of plague until a dirt bike rider waved back. Maybe two or three others after that nodded or waved. (Once I got off the motorway, no other traffic so can't comment there. And too busy trying to figure out my handling problems to bother if there had been, but that's another post)

NP------>Wanganui and back. Waved to every bike I went past (apart from those passing me in the same direction). Even waved while leaning over around a few corners, which I probably should not have. Even got a wave back from a HD rider. Was a good day with most riders either nodding or waving. :woohoo:

I find that commuting to work I get very few waves. On the weekend its much better. My belief is that if you were 'introduced' to the motorcycling scene by a motorcyclist, or have had contact with one or more (ie on weekend rides) you kinda get a bit schooled up about the protocol. Some commuters maybe naive and havent had the contact with other cyclists. I still wave anyway :).

:ride: I didnt wave to any bikes going along SH16 yesterday but I have an excuse it was my first time hitting that section of road at the pace i was going so i had intense concentration so i hardly noticed them "sorry to anyone who waved" :ride: :ride:

Well, none of these riders had any excuse then! It was a Sunday and they were all on SH1, SH57 or country roads! And the FXR rider didn't wave either...

No excuses about it being too windy or cold either, it was a lovely day, not hot but certainly not cold, and there was very little in the way of a breeze.

Got lots of waves and nods from bikes down between National park and Wellington when we travelled down there last week - and we were in the cage, FFS!

Shit, if your avatar is even a remote indication of what you look like, I'm not surprised you didn't get any waves back! Hell, I would have run off the road if I'd seen you!

We rode down to Waihi beach and back on sunday.....about 50% waved back...we all commented that not as many people as usual responded to our cheery greeting.

Hey Beemer, nice Goose. Is that badged "Special Edition"?
As a regular commuter I get plenty of waves from both commuters and travellers.
Note to scooter guys tho, don't be shy, hang out a finger or give us a nod.
BTW, spent 2 weeks on Norfolk Island last year, EVERYONE waves, cars, bikes, people pushing shopping trundlers. Nice and friendly, just the way I like it.

You know the story Beemer, the guys/lasses from himitangi corner were all harley riders. Dont expect any waves. If you see a big black muscle bike (me) you'll always get a wave. Even if you're on a tinny little trail bike. Fantastic weather ain't it.

rode to bulls and back yesterday....got waves from virtually everyone who went past on a bike...quite a few groups of 3 or 4 went past too. nothing better than rounding a corner and seeing a bunch of single headlights heading towards you.

Yep, that's the one! We went over to Lake Ferry today (I took the back seat for a change so I could enjoy the scenery!) and got heaps of waves. We went over Paekakariki Hill on the way and had a play with a couple of guys on sportsbikes who overtook us - but we kept with them! Tons of bikes at Caltex Rimutaka, it looked like a bike shop rather than a fuel station!

Got a lot of waves on the way back too, apart from the guy on the Harley with big ape hangers (and a purple and orange jacket - :puke: ) who probably would have lost control if he'd taken his hands off the bars!

Youse must be all skinny fellas, I'm 95kg, so 2up is a bit dodgy. Wanna discuss service tips? PM me.
As for waving to scooter-dudes, I were one for a while 'till recently, so I still have some empathy wiv 'em. U neva know, a good attitude may convince them to upgrade!

I have been taking note of this for a while now. I always wave if I can. My observations :

Scooters seldom wave back or nod etc - but the ones that do seem delighted

When I am on the Whale, crusiers very seldom reply (wave, nod, hand flick, whatever) , sprotbikes only occasionally, GNs and such like sometimes. Other BMWs, oddly, rarely respond. Stuffy lot.

On Li'l Ratty , I get a LOT more responses. Still only rarely scooters, GN type bikes quite often (those that don't sem a bit confused , so maybe they just don't understand), sprotbikes mostly , crusiers quite a lot, INCLUDING Harleys, and even patched gang types. BMWs sometimes.

The one bike that NEVER returns or acknowledges a wave , to either BMW or Ratty ? Ducatis. Snobbish lot the Ducatisti, I reckon.

T'other day I was tootling along Beach Rd and came up behind two Ducs. They moved to the left lane , so I came alongside in the right lane and gave them a wave. No response. Oh well. Then we came to the lights and one Duc moved over in front of me, I pulled up behind him and the other Duc beside me. So I said "Hi" to the chap beside me and waved to t'other guy, who was looking back to check that his mate was there. Absolutely no response at all - might as well have been a rock on the road. Guess they were too proud to be seen acknowledging a mere 250. Odd really, considering that argueably the best Ducati ever made was the 450 Desmo - a four stroke single, not much bigger than Ratty.

Next day, heavy traffic on the motorway, me going South in right hand lane, up comes a Duc going north in HIS right hand lane. So we passed about 6 foot apart at about 40kph. Of course I gave him a big wave, he stared straight at me , and totally ignored me.

Ah well, his loss. Can't blame learners who decide not to bother though if that's the response they get.

EDIT: I suppose it could be that Ducati riders are so busy worrying about how long they've got until the next electrical failure that they can't think of anything else :devil2:
