Hi there,
I do 200km a day on the bike and sometimes the exhaust fumes can get a bit much, the long stretch of filtering between Albany and the bridge is where most the fumes get sucked in :-(
Anyone recommend a decent filter mask that would go under the helmet ?
Hermetically sealing my helmet would help but would lead to other issues ....
Thanks!

Those cheap white throw away masks would be your best bet. The flat ones, not the formed ones, would probably fit best. You can buy boxes of em.
Also come in handy for wearing with scrubs and rubber gloves with a dab of fake blood so you can yell Dr Dr to get to the front of crowds at music festivals and the bank ;)

lol, seems you hit a nerve there. But that's what us moaning JAFAs do. It's like a trademark, 2/3rds of the kiwi population would be disappointed if it was otherwise.
You keep your open sweeping roads, we'll keep our clogged motorways and become slow speed lane splitting experts (incidentally, while wearing our gas masks).
PS Still waiting for the handle-mounted espresso machine to be released, you guys got any up north ?

Just following up on my own post .. I got myself a Respro Techno mask (http://respro.com/store/product/techno-mask), and the difference it makes is HUGE!
Admittedly it's a bit of a squeeze under the helmet but it does filter out the bulk of the crap I'm inhaling.

Yeah, I bought myself a Respro mask when I was living in London. The pollution there is an absolute nightmare, and I found it made a huge difference, too. Then again, someone recently told me that the most dangerous particles are actually incredibly tiny and make it through most masks, so I wouldn't be too optimistic...

Nope .. I don't live in Auckland, but I do work there (necessary evil) ... hence the 200km a day riding I mentioned in the first post, my bike isn't garage jewellery like a lot of peoples and I commute further in a day than most people do in a week, so I thought I'd ask what sort of filters are around to block a lot of the crud from going in my lungs (not keen on sounding like I gargle with broken glass).

There's worse things you could get up your helmet. On the plus side, that thing comes in a range of tasteful colours to match your helmet, your bike, or your nail varnish.
Such considerations tending to matter more in Auckland.

Oh you just have no idea, trying to color co-ordinate your jacket, pants, boots, gloves, helmet, nail varnish and eye liner to your bike is no easy task, and that's just the blokes.
Sorry, wondering off topic here, glad you managed to find something to hold back the worst of the air pollution, we cant all live in the back of beyond with volumes of fresh air, got to make a living somewhere
