I think you'll find that the reason cell phones work on planes is largely because the airline hijacks your mobile phone service and charges you their own special tariff for the privilege of being able to use your phone whilst aboard. Other than that, assuming the service was switched off, you are dependent upon being able to connect via a service providing tower. Fat/remote chance of that out in the Indian Ocean.
Line of sight transmission it's mainly the horizon and objects blocking the tower that determine the range. Cruising overhead at 30,000 feet is only really 10km away. But yeah not many towers in range in the Indian Ocean.

A terrible tragedy. Innocent people perished at sea/air and friends and loved ones suffering horribly.
There suffering will be reduced once they find the flight recorder and black box to allow everyone to understand just what went wrong.
Apparently the black box emits a ping to facilitate its easy location.

I thought it ran out of fuel before going down, so there won't a great deal of fuel to see. I wouldn't have thought that the engine oil (if that's what jets use) would not be a significant enough in volume to show. Half a dozen cans of Castrol is nothing compared with the volume of the indian ocean
There's a great chance that the plane will be found, the passengers will all still be alive, and this will all be sorted by this time next week.

You just caused me a great deal of googling.
It seems the jet turbines do use a quantity of oil to lube and cool the main turbine shaft via a heat exchanger, with anywhere from half to 8 gallons per engine.
I'd expect the landing gear would hold a quantity of hydraulic oil...

If the plane ran out of fuel up in the air, what speed would that bulk be likely to hit the water at. Free falling?
If it glided down onto the sea in a crash landing style, then someone would have been controlling it.
If it was flying at 15,000 feet, then the engines cut out, it would then drop like a rock I'd imagine. The plane would surely tear to bits on impact.
What an horrific end to the lives of the passengers.

If it was under the pilots control, when it did run out of gas, he knew he'd be fucked - in the middle of an empty ocean, no way to survive, so why would he do a controlled soft landing only to survive and be slaughtered by any surviving passengers.....?? Surely he wanted it to end asap? Nose dive in at max speed??
If he was dead/unconscious already, it would have run out of gas, pitched down, banked one way, then spiraled that way, nose diving into the ocean.......
OR.....
He could have parachuted out into an awaiting military vessel and vanished......;)

Depends. :D
Apparently.
I was talking to someone who knows such stuff last week. Most of the critical instrumentation is battery backed-up but the control hydraulics are driven by the engines. But then apparently there's a propeller driven pump that deploys automatically when pressure drops for too long... et viola. :niceone:
In which case they can be glided, if there's a pilot in control. If not they auto-cycle up and down, velocity causing the nose to rise until they stall and pitch over into another dive. Likelihood in that case is a collision with the surface nearly perpendicular.

Now we're talking. A pressurized cabin and a propeller? This gets more and more like Thunderbirds. So they had a controlled landing on water, like the Hudson River jobbie, then when it sank to 20 fathoms the propeller kick started and off they chugged to port unknown.

Sort of.....
There would be no way a plane would lose both engines at exactly the same time if running out of fuel. Therefore, with no pilot in control, the plane would yaw one way, bank and roll, then nose dive.... with the same results.....

Also only if the trims are set correctly for both low and high speed. Otherwise any slight roll or yaw input would cause the same effect as I mentioned above.

Surely the food would last more than a week. Butcher all passengers above Premium Economy and then you'd double the food rations and also have plenty of fatty meat to last more than a month.
And what about looking through the Chinese passengers luggage? Nothing to declare - Yeah right!

The lifeboats must fold up well, 290 into 4 goes about 72 in each, plus provisions. Would have to be a decent sized lifeboat. Mind you, the airline probably figure on losing a good number of passengers in the landing.

There is alot of rules relating to liferafts on aircraft....
If the planes largest liferaft is to be rendered useless, then the remaining liferafts must be able to accommodate the passengers that the largest one would have carried too.....
It's called redundancy... its fortunately what aircraft have to do....

I think they double as emergency slides in the event of wheels down emergency landings on tarmac ...
There are four dual lane slide rafts on a B777 from what I recall. They take approx 6-8 seconds to inflate.
In the event of a landing they are slides.
In the event of a ditching they are slide/rafts....
The thing is though, the rear doors may be under water, therefore the slides may not inflate. The crew will disarm doors and re-direct forward to other usable doors...
Of course this would only happen if everyone survived the ditching...
Door 1 65/81 (overload capacity)
Door 2 57/71
Door 3 51/63
Door 4 60/75
They are also equipped....
ELT i.e. Emergency Locater Transmitter.
Canopy
Survival Kit: First Aid Kit, flares, signal mirrors, sea dye marker, survival manual, flashlight, water, bailing bucket, sponge.
Manual Inflation Hand Pump. The valves are self-closing upon removal.
In a perfect world, the crew are trained, but like all things, the training happens in a artificial environment...
Even liferaft training is conducted in a heated pool....

They were saying that the equipment they have, ready to go, is suited for searching at the 5km depths that MH370 is thought to be at, yet at the time of the interview, they were still waiting for the call. Meanwhile the submersible that IS being used is right at the limits of range. do they want this thing found or not?

Hazardous goods like batteries would be a separate consignment, not packed in with a heap of other freight making emergency /inspection access difficult.

They'ze sayin' it's maybe been shot down, maybe, by accident, innit.
There's a book out about it already!
He says this raises the significance that around the time the plane's transponder went off at 01.21, New Zealander Mike McKay, working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Thailand, saw a burning plane. He links that to the joint Thai-US military exercise going on in the South China Sea with personnel from China, Japan, Indonesia and other countries.
''The drill was to involve mock warfare on land, in water and in the air, and would include live-fire exercises,'' he writes.
''Say a participant accidentally shot down Flight MH370. Such things do happen. No one wants another Lockerbie [Pan Am flight 103 by terrorists in 1988 allegedly in retaliation for a US Navy strike on an Iranian commercial jet six months earlier], so those involved would have every reason to keep quiet about it.''
He suggests through anonymous and contradictory sources, they might release misinformation, leading people to search in the wrong place in an environment so hostile that it would be unlikely anything would ever be found.
''After all, no wreckage has been found in the south Indian Ocean, which in itself is suspicious,'' Cawthorne writes.
''Now I'm not saying that's what happened but if a black box is found, who is to say that it is from Flight MH370? Another black box could have been dropped in the sea 1000 miles from Perth while the search was going on in the South China Sea. In these circumstances, with the amount of disinformation abroad, it is best to be sceptical.''
Hmm......

Simply put. No.
Process to find something:
- Find out where it last was?
- Find out where it was going?
- Confirm it was going where it was going?
- Look where people tell you they last saw it.
They new it left Malaysia
They thought it was going north.
So everyone jump in the water and let see what is north of Malaysia.
Oh wait - there is more information you say? Now it's south?
The telemetry systems on those birds is better that what most think. If there is data that shows an engine running for 5 hours. It ran for 5 hours.

Big difference. If you say "I'm standing on the corner of Manners and Taranaki street and I'm reading a news paper can you see the headline? The answer is - yes I can...
If you ask 'can you track every commercial airliner currently flying and monitor where its going' the answer is no I can't.
I've had a little to do with biometrics like facial recognition and its a similar problem. If say you have a company with 100 office staff and you want door access you have a data base off 100 and so you compare a face in the camera to the dataset of 100 staff. Relatively easy to do. Scanning a football stadium (say 40,000 faces) for all known criminals on your database? Thats almost impossible. Scanning for 1 known face in the 40,000 is nearly doable but.... not a list of all the known criminal faces in a sample that big.

Data can produce gold or bullshit. You need the right data, in a clear form to make the right conclusion.
In your case - reading a face is difficult. It is the wrong information, but reading rfid is not so much. So using your 100 people in a building, it's a piece of cake (relatively - actually its fucking difficult, but easier than reading a face).
Many biometric solutions fail because its not a static metric.......its dynamic, it's analog. Someone could punch you in the face and facial recognition suddenly has to have another algorithm to deal with.
But these planes did have metrics that told people it was flying.
The GE had built in monitoring telemetry (remote monitoring of items) to report back engine status (broadcast report not polled).
These reports it showing the engines RUNNING for 5 hours.
Additional to this, the emergency devices have a report-by-exception action on trigger.
So the facts from data we have, that are know is:
- Engines ran for 5 hours
- Emergency Beacons did not fire, or activated - but were unable to report (radio signal problem).
We don't know if the engines stopped (signal lost). Or why they stopped (failure or disengaged). Either signals never made it home.
So no, this problem is completely different to yours - in this one the problem isn't using a satellite to spot something, like a person in a crowd. But more which way did they go? Where do we expect them to be?
edit: so in conclusion.....they are not looking. They aren't looking at the data - or even releasing the data for others to look at.

On top of that, they have been spouting the official story for so long they are scared of being made to look stupid by actually sitting back and examining the facts in front of them.

Edward Snowden for President!
He's a phony set up as our saviour. None of the info released has been new stuff that wasn't already available with a bit of research... And just like the 'truther' sites there's one country that comes out squeaky clean still after all his 'leaks', and it aint the USA either...
Yep something shady happened on 911 and on previous occasions but none of the big alternative sites ever cover the full story and the 'who did it' properly.

Very similar to the 747 that got shot down over the sea of Japan a few years ago. The Americans learnt a hell'va lot about the Russian air response capabilities from that incident.

Yip! Controlled precision......
"Minor fires" or raging fires, still doesn't explain why the building collapsed, and why it collapsed at free-fall speed.
And what's more, it doesn't explain why the BBC reported that the building had collapsed long before it actually had - scripted anyone???

...would pre script something so critical and hand it out to a televison network
Firstly the networks are all "owned" and even the BBC's "neutrality" has been shown to be anything but in recent times...
And the way Black Ops work is they have people in all the right places before anything ever happens anyway. Any organisation with any influence will have been infiltrated with someone getting a second paycheck in a kind of reverse sleeper cell arrangement... This book explains it well http://www.amazon.com/The-Secret-Team-Allies-Control/dp/B006PJ3UYI/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1400667501&sr=8-5&keywords=the+secret+team+l+fletcher+prouty

But RR did get a download or info on how long the engines ran anyway. So that tells us the system is built in anyway and always working its just they don't disclose to the non paying airline the data if they don't subscribe.
With the money these things are worth and how cheap data storage is you can bet there is a harddrive at RR HQ with EVERYTHING those two engines have ever done.
Kinda like some of the top tier prosumer DSLRS, the hardware is there to do the extra focus points or higher iso performance but artificially crippled by firmware restriction.

Sorry to disappoint you there dude.
I do understand that there are bad things that happen for pathetic reasons. I certainly don't need conspiracies to reassure myself of a higher power. I for one do not believe in any higher power at all. Period.
I certainly don't buy into the belief that there are random terrorists doing shit because they can. Most events on the world stage have been known to be fabricated by governments, hellbent on trying to persuade their citizens to believe in their strategies and objectives.
...and I certainly do not believe in chem trails..........
I simply don't take the governments spiel as truth.
As an example - look at the Campbell live episode about the GCSB last week - Key was infact a lying c@nt! and has now been caught out!
That is what I am referring to. Bullshit excuses and no accountability from those in power.

I believe in some of the conspiracy theories but not all of them. I'd actually prefer real terrorists to be behind it all as they are not too bright and could be caught fairly easy like they do with some of them.
But when you've got rogue elements embedded in govt dept and special forces that's a whole lot more dangerous than a few fanatic with box cutters...
Where by the way are all these sleeper cells and jetset jihadis??? Oh that's right there over in Syria as Western backed 'rebels'... Surely with the west bombing them back into the stoneage with drone strikes there must be some of them going to do something but nothing.

No reports of passenger body or body part recovery from the Pentagon. All apparently burned to ashes or beyond recognition.
Which is a load of shit. Refer to eye witness and emergency response crews' accounts of PSA Flight 182 in 1978 or AeroMexico Flight 498 1986 for example.

Let me see now ... (keep this simple for the masses) it has been shown that a bike or car travelling at something like 280 klicks will NOT be photographed on a speed camera ....
The 757 that hit the Pentagon has a cruising speed of around 850 klicks ... And is likely to have been doing well over 280 klicks when it hit the Pentagon ...
From a static camera pointing at the wall of the Pentagon, just how many frames do you expect the plane to be seen on? (Given that the film is NOT a continuous image, but a series of frames) ...

Do you seriously think that there was only one video camera operating in the vicinity of the Pentagon that day?
The answer to that is... it depends...
If you are inside a big secure building you will typically have cameras monitoring hallways, lobbies, entrances etc and facing out from the building. You won't have many across the road looking at your building. Lets assume that the official version is true - ie the impact and fire was so great everyting was vapourised then a lot of your infrastructure would also go to ash. You might not get a clear image of a plane crashing into your building.

Let me see now....... Keeping it real simple for the masses too.... the CIA/FBI/NSA etc. etc... confiscated 84 video cameras that were pointed at the Pentagon that morning from such places like hotels, motels, petrol stations, security cameras etc etc.... from up to a few kms away (still real simple), yet they won't show even a 5 second clip from any of them..... it has nothing to do with the frame speed of the video cameras, nor the Pentagon video footage they released.... However, the Pentagon has many tens of videos around its perimeter looking outwards - google it. Another issue not raised, is why did the Pentagon anti-aircraft defense system of missiles not blow up the plane before it hit?? Afterall, that was their function when any aircraft hasn't squawked the correct code.
Another point, being an ex-pilot, I can tell you that there is no way a 757 can fly at ground level at 850kms - at 35,000 ft, yip, no issue, but not at sea level. So another 'smoke n mirrors' argument.
One only has to view the size of the engine turbine assembly they 'found' at the pentagon to realise it wasn't from a 757.297434 <----- I mean REALLY???? You can stand inside a 757 engine casing.
