Why do you need to buy a mordern litre bike?
Is it just a penis extention??
These bikes usually have 160-170kmph first gears...so if your going through most of the twisties in NZ are you going to be in 1st ?
After all that rush of aceleration we all enjoy is in the last 3000-3500rpm of the rev range...is it not?
are you going to be riding around on a bike that in real terms is going to be only as fast as your mates 600 through the twisties? I'm right arn't I ?
we don't ride on race tracks all that often do we?
So has all you 1k boys out there got any reason for owning a modern litre bike other than to make yourselves think your faster through the twisties because you have 150-170hp between your legs?
And come on people lets have a good debate/argument here...none of this sitting on the fence crap...I want to know what people think?

'Xactly That's why I got me a 650 which was 30 kg lighter.
And I'm never going to push it to the limits so.. *Shrugs*

Mr poos:
Although my bike isn't a litre bike, it would've been if the salesman had convinced me to test-ride a Blackybird. I need it because my penis is only average, and I need it extended. And because I have to ride everywhere at 100mph, and a litre bike would do it more easierer than my mere 0.781 litre bike does, as it has only ~100hp.

litre sports bikes aren't needed as much imho. My 6hundy is more than enough for me to get into trouble with on the road, and if you ride them right, you can give the litre boys a run for their money thru the twisties. It's only really the straights that they understandably get away. But physics get in the way at a certain point in corners, at which most modern 6hundies can achieve along with the thous.
litre tourers are different imo, tho. They are often more refined and better engines for touring and cruising. They can really kick up a stink, so they're far from slow, but it's not their main target punter.
Some people would have a thou over any 6, any day. Fairy muff. each to their own. but the 6hundies of today, would piss over most 750s, a fair few twins and a few thous of yester-year, and back then, they were the mutts nutts.. wonder whats gonna be around in 5 years time...

Its the fact that its there. Dont have to use it, but if you do choose to, The bike doesnt have to work half as hard as a 600.
No, the average rider cant use even 100hp (face facts! you cant!)
So I dont really think it matters now days, as the new 600's have more than 100 at the rear now easily!
I have thought about getting a late model 600, but I just love having endless power.
I cant use the power of the R1 to its potential, but am not slow on it through twisties, and love it to bits!

Complete overkill IMHO......
That said, I would love to own a TL1000, because they look and sound cool.
If they made a 650 or something, I'd have one by now.
People own them for all different reasons, like owning a 4x4 to drop the kids at school.
I honestly think looks play a big part. Upside forks look way better than right way round, radial calipers better than cantilevers etc... and all the best bits come on the top bikes = I'm gonna get that one.

In my case it isn't a 'mordern' 1 litre bike, as the model has been around for 20 years or so. I wanted a tourer and I reckon you need that sort of capacity; especially when you are looking at carrying luggage and two up riding. In terms of performance (speed etc) a modern 600 would eat me for breakfast.
But I don't want to talk about my baby at the moment.... :weep:

Only got the TL1000 because a mate was selling it.. and it sounds fecking wickid..
and I thought it was time I got back into riding.... =)
I'm not a speedster, nor am I fast through the bendies (far from it!), I definately do not use all the hp the beast has.. nor would I...

You don't make it plain whether you mean all 1000cc bikes or just sprotsbikes.
For m'self OTHER FACTORS BEING EQUAL, I reckon there's no subsitute for cubes. I've never owned a litre bike, and I very much doubt I'd set out to own a litre sprotbike. But a litre+ plus touer or cruiser is another matter.
My logic here is that a big capacity bike can have the engine detuned. So that it's a nice torquey easy machine. And "great engines move slowly, and are not so soon put out of frame"
So the big 1000+ cc Vtwins make a lot of sense to me. But sprotbikes , I dont have the skills or the balls to push a 1000cc sprotbike anywhere near its limits on the public road. Some people do, good luck to them. Sometimes wonder what the percentage is though
And I did say other things being equal. Sometimes a smaller machine is actually faster as a tourer, because it's smoother , lighter, nimbler. I wonder what the real difference would be between a 1000 cc sprotbike and a 600 ditto, over a run of say 600km ?

erm...NO. I pretty only use mine for piddling :weep: out of these days anyway so it would be quite inconvenient.....although I suppose on those long trips you could runit down your trouser leg and there would be no need to make those toilet stops :p ..anyway I digress...in fact a litre bike is a penis SUBSTITUTE. :yeah: An old fat ugly feeble near-impotent geezer with no hair and no girlfriend such as myself is empowered by one, made nearly superhuman..and BETTER LOOKING too, and the more powerful the bike the better....and I get to wear cool gear that makes me look much younger and more virile...at least until I take my helmet off ..... :pinch:
It's simple: normal well-adjusted people with LIVES don't need 170hp strapped between their thighs. I, and other unfortunates like me, on the other hand, do...... :violin:

My 20hp is more than enough for me. As the km roll by starting to feel more confident of it's handling limits (already know the hp limit) but know I'm still not pushing the envelope hard and thus she's not boring. Seeing the pump price, I'm not going to replace her. Cheap as Fish n Chips for tea to run.
But, if I were to carry a passenger or do long distance frequently, then I'll want more ponies throbbing away, but the engine will most likely be a V-twin in range of 250-650cc.
A rider picks their own ride for their own personal reasons and I respect them for that even if I can't see the logic behind their purchase or why they ride the way they do.

Yes.
It's more relaxing to ride a bike with decent power and/or displacement on the highway. So even though I bought my semi-litre mordern sprotsbike and my previous semi-litre semi-mordern sprotsbike (it was only 0.996 litres, and 'old' 1997 technomology) because of the well-documented penis/virility-enhancing abilities, I enjoyed the ease with which both/all of them gobbled kilometres. And in the case of the VifFerraRi, miles.

My 2 cents worth
For me, I enjoy having a huge amount of acceleration. I was never one who enjoyed high speed much (200Khr plus), my thrill is in the 0-100 sprint (probably brought on from riding 250-500cc 2 stroke motorcross bikes since I was 12). There is nothing better than smoking a boy racer at the lights and more you smoke him the better (without breaking the speed limit of course). I have found that 600's are not as quick in this initial acceleration phase as the 1000's (unfortunalty the CBR is the only 600 I can compare and it may be that the 636 can match the 1000?). Also, as a consequence of not as much acceleration, getting the font wheel up is more difficult for those of us who feel the urge to get it up there.
I have no issues with 1000 cc owners as I can definately see why you may want the extra horses (same reason people by a ferrari - who the hell needs car that can do 300Km +?).

no point in owning a super litre bike unless your out to prove something I reckon or perhaps putting it on the track as some of my mates do.
I would own a litre bike if I was touring long distances or if I owned a twin.
The 636 can keep up just nicely should I choose to try, on the straights as buggy said forget it.
Mind you I tickled up a few litre bikes at taupo on my 400, some of the riders were good riders to, eh Darryl:woohoo:

Itsa good question.
I pondered it as i stood gazing at the k5 outside the local zook shop. It's (un)arguably the meanest street going beast in captivity.
And if i owned it i'd like to not just break the speed limit, the the crust on a creme-brulet(sp), i'd like to smash it into fricken peices, i'd like to ram it from behind like sally the sheep.
As for the penis extension idea, i dunno. After getting (off) on one of those things my old fulla would be inside out and hiding in abject fear somewhere in my throat region. So it'd be no use beside doing a fair impression of a 2nd adams apple.
And i'd OWN the road more than i do now. Boyracers? Beneath contempt. 4wd's? I'd be spitting large chunks of road surface at them as i rode passed with my eyeballs trying to escape through the back of my head. I'd give motorcycling the bad name it so richly deserves. Anybody got a loaner k5?

the couple of thous that I've ridden, I've actually found them less torquey than the 636 low down. But then of course, once the revs pick up, the thou has it.
Another thing, it's great having a big bike, but can ya use it? You can be an utter nutcase and ride the tits off anything and be on a 400. Where as you can be ok, know a little and be on a thou.. who's gonna be the faster rider?

Next bike that I get will be a 1000 or bigger.. why, cus I can.. easier to ride, not doing the dance of the left foot as often.. effortless torque.. these are good things. Yes, I could stick with the 800, but... time to put the VFR in to pasture, give her a run on the weekends or something. Even a half arsed monkey on a scooter could beat me on the twisty bits, but that's not why I ride..

I have a really little willy so I need a 1.2 litre bike. But it's full to the brim with torques, which suits me as I have a lazy left foot.
But I can't be doin' with sprotbikes for more than 30 mins at a time. I don't want to be a super scheme for a chiropractor.

WT, Loosebruce and the likes will have one answer for you. When you can bring the front wheel up just under power and no clutch while you are doing 160kmph in 3rd.. You know why you've got a thousand.
I am not relating anyone into this sinario but when you have a 600 and if you are the sort of person who runs from the law, you can get away but there is always that little bit of a chance of being caught... On a thousand, you know you OWN the road. You can just blast out of there in a hurry and not worry about a thing.
A thousand looks meaner as well if you like to show off..
When 2 up, a thousand will still be fuken quick where as a 600 will show signs of being slower with the extra weight..
You don't have to constantly ring the neck of the bike like you would with a 600 to go fuken fast.. With a thousand you can still go easy with it while going fast...
I could sit here and have pleanty more reasons to go with a thou.. If I had the money to be able to buy and run a thou, I'd probably out there in Colemans signing myself for a new GIXXER thou right now!
If someone wants a thou, purely for looks or for it's insane performance, then good for them for being able to afford one. They worked hard for their money and it's up to them on what they wish to spend it on. I'm not going to judge them for that.
P.S. I know pleanty of people who can absolutly thrash the hell out of R1s, Gixxer1Ks, CBR1Ks etc on road or race track...

The same argument gould be applied to anything over a 250, I wen't for a ride on sunday with a 636, a 750 and a Thou. The Thou left us for dead but I feel that was more rider skill than anything, he would've done the same on a 250. the rest of us had quite a ride, the only place the other two were faster than me was on the decent length straights

Bigger is definitely more appealing but is it always practical? I now ride what is considered by most to be a rather dull machine. It suits both my purse and my purpose. It covers most of the biking experience that I want to have these days and it's very reliable. I guess I'm just a dull old guy now but at least I'm still doing what I like to do. I want to keep doing it as long as I can. When I had big fast bikes I could not resist banging them out to their max at every opportunity and even when the opportunity wasn't really there. On my current steed it will simulate but it is always an event you have to consciously ask the bike to deliver. All the big bikes I have had have volunteered and I have no resistance to their urges.
I am very happy with my little chappy "on both counts". Cheers John.

A classic example of someone who doesnt get it..........
Mate you ever see rossi redlining his bike thru corners? you ever been to the track and red lined a bike thru corners? its not done, and for good reason! it unsettles the bike and doesnt make for a smooth exit.
and if you look at the torque curve on a thou you will notice max torque is much much lower in the rev range than on a 600.
Maybe you should get out with some good thou riders one day, i certainly dont doubt guys can thrash thous on the road, ive seen it!

and err...theres a big difference between riding fast and thrashing a bike...
thrashing is riding at or above 9/10th's
and there may be one or two imortals out there that could do that...but they would be earing a wage racing in the weekends
and why would being that high in the rev range unsettle a bike in the corners?

Good subject to disscuss 'Poos. I've owned bikes on both sides of this argument. When I rode a Gixxer Six, my oppinion was that I was going as fast as any road would possibly allow, irrespective of bike size. I wondered what the hell all the fuss was about with a 1000cc machine. The opportunity soon came to get a 1000 and I leapt at it. For the first three weeks of ownership I wondered what the hell I'd done. The power was frightfull, the speeds insane. Gradually, I came to grips with the bike and now, I wont go back I don't think.
I can carry the same corner speed easily as I could on the 600, more with race tyres fitted, and the way the thou' leaps outta corners is unbelievable. You have so much torque available at any given point, you need more speed? Use more throttle. The downside is that they're VERY easy to come unstuck on.
Contrary to popular beliefe, there are people around who can and do use their thousands as they were intended when built. Might not be entirely legal, but they're getting ridden, and hard.
Also, you can't hoist the front at 170kph in 3rd gear on any 600, I don't care how good it is.

And it's FUN. Each to their own. If it's an ego boost you want and need - go for it. I wanted a powerful sports cruiser as a treat to myself - and that's what I got.
I'm not the fastest or the bestest and can't ride within a hairs breadth of death and carenage as I rocket around corners... I admire those who can for their ability, but I'm not interested in learning to do that for myself.
I had a 550, now I have a 900, and I think it's slightly too big (heavy). Next time I might go for a 750, or maybe a bigger bike with lighter handling...

do you ride a diesel then?
not many bikes have a sweet spot that low.. My bike doesn't wake up until at least 7 or 8, and will happily scream it's little lungs out to 16,500.
If you take a corner at 15k rpm, for one, you haven't got much exit speed comin, so you'd find yourself changing mid-corner, which isn't the best idea since sliced bread. Also, at the high revs, the engine braking and accelerating is very harsh, so by screaming into a corner, then backing off or gunning it, there's more chance of breaking the back loose, and that isn't always much fun. Normally, hacking thru corners (obviously depending on the road and corners etc), the revs sit around 7-12k on average, and obvisouly climb exiting the corners

When I bought my 600, I first went for a test ride on the thou. I came back shaking, thinking "how on earth can anyone control that thing" ... So I told the salesman... "I love the bike, but I think I'll take it's little brother".
I'm glad I did this. Slowly I'm getting to used to the 600 and pushing it more and more. (the track days are good for this).... I must admit that I sometimes find myself thinking .. "Wonder if I should get the thou next" ... and I probably will, but not before I feel like I can control the 600 better.

WT has spoken, I now wait with baited breath for Loosebruce to enter the discussion...
Speed is something that you never understand until you get there. I've learnt over the years that just cos you think you're going fast or know "the limits", doesn't mean to say that there isn't someone out there who can wipe the floor with you. The "limits" on a little bike with an average rider will be stalling speed to a thou with a squid on board. It's something I can't understand cos I haven't got there, but I've been around long enough to know that's how it is.
You can argue the physics behind a 600 v 1000 on the corners anyday, but the fact is, if the 1000 can maintain the SAME speed through the corner, then it will be a quicker bike because it got to that corner quicker, and will get to the next corner quicker.
When I bought my bike, I had the choice between an R1 or the 636 - they were literally right next to each other on the used lineup in the shop, and both fit my budget. I ummed and ahhed for a couple weeks, then fortunately (well for me anyway) an unnamed chap had an intimate moment with asphalt right in front of me while using a thou for what only a thou can do... Having a similar personality to this person (prone to exercising the right wrist just cos I can), I felt the 636 would keep me alive a bit longer.
But give me another couple of years and I will have forgotten about that, and will go be back in the same predicament... thou or 6? The 636 ain't slow, 118hp 170g apparently, but believe me, I've gotten very used to that power. Just like Rossi would freak if his machine lost 5hp, that fact that it's still putting out a shedload is irrelevant. Another 50hp would not go amiss between my legs :ride:

136hp 636 - 142hp K3 1000, fuck off Brett whos fucken leg you trying to pull, the day i see 136hp from the rear wheel of a 600 i'll buy it, try 114.7hp at the rear wheel on your 636 and the K5 is up over the K3 and has 158.1 (quoted from Superbike magazine.
ANd then if you want to get techy about it, torque 47.2ft-lb@11,325rpm on the 636 and 83.9ft-lb@9,046rpm K5, thats getting close to double the torque, and thats what makes a bike so fucken fast, look at Busa's and the like, peak power isn't that much more than a litre sportsbike but torque is more.
Litre sports bike + Wet twisties roads = No fun!! - Bull Shit, if you cant ride it'd be no fun, i love riding my thou in the wet and it's a piss of peice to go fast, the thou has so much more torque you dont have to be up in the revs to go fast, same as a twin, lazy almost, i had more moments in the wet on my TL than the GSXR, and plus when you want to getting it un stuck and lighting it up to the next corner can be quite fun on the GSXR. But no doubt i'd be alot quicker in the wet on a 1000cc over a 600cc.
I too used to believe that i'd be just as fast on any given road on a 600cc over a 1000cc but thats a crock of shit, as WT said the way the 1000cc launches out of a corner is second to none, i dont think there'd be much diff on the road when flicking a 1000cc about as to a 600cc, they're almost the same weight and size to begin with.
Why the 1000cc, cause on the road nothing can touch it in a straightline and as MR said getting away from .......... is rather easy (choppers on the other hand) i go to the track whenever i can afford it, and like WT said there are people out there who ride 1000cc hard on the road. Wheelies, fuck this thing is the shizzle for wheelies, and stoppies and whatever else the hooligan in me likes to do, 600cc are good but the 1000cc is a step above.
And to add to the debate as of late there's been no 600's in my mirrors through any section of road, there used to this orange 750cc but thats falling behind now too :Pokey: . Although i would say that a 600cc with me ol mate WT aboard would be giving me a run for my money.
So my conculsion is this, 600cc are fucking amazing machines and more than enough for a lot of people but you're going have to be a pretty damn good rider to kick it with a more than capable rider on a 1000cc. I know on a 600cc i wouldn't be as fast as i am on 1000cc - FACT

OK, what is fast? How do you define "thrashing a bike"?
It's all a reletive term isn't it? You may think you are going fast and you maybe going quite fast. The noobie next to you will probably look at you as a hero who is almost as good as Rossi where as a succesfull road racer might put you to shame.. Even some of the top racers from NZ, get a hard time in Australia or over in Europe..
Going back to the dudes with the thous riding on the road... Well, lets just say that on a fine day their 120/70/17 profile front tire (Metzeler Racetec) gets worn right to the edge with strips rubber balling and curling up from abuse. Then while coming out of turns it would be quite common to see the rear wheel sliding out significantly and leaving black lines through the road.
I know if you compair that to racing speeds of the Superbike races, it's still no where near that. That's because for obvious reasons, you can only go so fast on the road. However speaking from my experience, it would be fair to say that, these guys do ride quick and their bikes are being thrashed quite hard on the road.
If you have doubts, that's cool. If you do want to see for yourself, contact me and I'll hook you up for a quick ride with the fast boys.

Just cause it's not red lining doesn't mean i not on the edge or thrashing it.

If I thought we were going fast before then, we were going farkin balistic after that in the Blades wheel tracks.
Some people are quick, some try to be and some are just kidding themselves. Normally the quick guys are quick on whatever they ride, they just like the litre machines as they add a challenge.

I'm on a thou and I bet I'll get smoked by any other thou, any 600 and probably most 400's. I won't even take on a 250 actually, especially after seeing the way Velox took on the Rimutakas on Monday.
The reason I am on a thou has nothing to do with speed and nothing to do with penis extensions. I brought my thou because I love the sound of the V-Twin engine rumbling and when I want to ride at 130-140kph, it just purrs along. I can chuck my 120kg mate on the back and it still purrs.
Loads of torque, easy and pleasurable to ride.
Although it's a thou, it's not an inline 4, and was never meant to be.
Not all thous, are about speed.
Kind of makes this thread abit pointless unless you were of course talking inline 4 thous.

Im'a comin bboooooyyyyyy, Im'a comin...
Give me 3 weeks to get the bike on the road, 2 hard rides to get used to it, 1 ride to get throughly thrashed by you, then another ride to crash it trying to pass you on the outside, then anther 9 fucking months fixing it... sounds like a plan...
Personally, ive got a 600 because that is the stage i am upto... I can thrash the ZXR400 to its absolute limits, and am slowly increasing my limits to find the limits of a racetrack... SO the next step up is a 600...
I would get a GSXR1000 if i was upto that stage, but im not ready for it yet... For me owning a thou would be because i want to be a hooligan and pull some mean effortless wheelies...
Most of the guys i ride with that own thous thrash them to the limits as MR said, leaving black lines and balling up the edges of the tyres...

Its to make up for inadequaces elsewhere, whether being a lack of genetailia (sp) or lack of riding ability. I'll go and hide now :devil2:

Bigger is definitely more appealing but is it always practical? I now ride what is considered by most to be a rather dull machine. It suits both my purse and my purpose. It covers most of the biking experience that I want to have these days and it's very reliable.
Now I own an ancestor of John's TransAlp, the NTV650 is a great bike. Probably a bit perkier than the Alp yet definitely dull compared to the Voxan. But I like both, for different reasons. However both are expertly engineered and it'd take a real nit-picking twit to knock the Voxan on that count. Its 110kW and equal Nm of torque is way less than most mordern sprotbikes but wow! what a package: engineering, looks, versatility, handling, power....I reckon they'll outlive most current 1000s in the long run, even if only for that wee bit of conservatism necessary to produce a good all-rounder.
Personal choice or horses for courses Cowpoos, anything else could be shite.

Why do you need to buy a mordern litre bike?
Is it just a penis extention??Sure thing, in this world vanity, vanity, all is vanity!
The modern litre bikes are the fastest and most powerful production motorcycles ever - who wouldn't want one? There is something in all of us that desires the best of the best!
All this nonsense about "needing" one, etc, etc is irrelevant.
And come on people lets have a good debate/argument here...none of this sitting on the fence crap...I want to know what people think? What I think is that a lot of people spout on about a subject they know little about - don't knock it till you try it! And I'm not talking about 'test riding' either, I'm talking about owning and spending many hours riding one. Like WT says, he'd find it hard to go back to a 600 now that he's found his groove in the 1000, and as LB said it is a step up! Listen to them, they know. :blip:
Bruce let me take his K3 1000 for a blast a month or so ago and I really enjoyed it. It didn't blow me out of the water like they seem to with some people, maybe cos I've been riding a fairly fast bike for 6 months now and am confident with a similar power delivery, but what excited me most was the *weight* factor in comparison to my Blackbird!! Yep I can tell you that front comes up mighty easily...
I'll buy a modern thousand in the near future and I'll love it - guaranteed! For me it's about my enjoyment, not how others feel about it.

Torque
1st September 2005, 19:41
The main reasons for owning a 1000 sports bike are.
* Lots of grunt out of the corners.
* Lots of Torque around and out of the corners.
* You don't have to rev the balls out of the engine unless you want to leap up the road.
* You have it all, you can cruise with your 600 mates or just leave them at the side of the road!
* And if you have a really big P--ck then you have nothing to prove.
* The new litre bikes are nearly the same size and weight as the 600 and handle really well around corners so why not have the best of both worlds and get the most powerful and fastest bike you can buy.
* You just cannot beat winding open the throttle in the right conditions on a litre sports bike. The last 4 bikes i have owned have all been 1000cc or more and i find i ride safer and enjoy my riding way more than riding a smaller bike. Saying that though i have started racing a 400cc and even with the lack of power i still have that grin factor. Every one to there own thats what i say. :ride:

600's are gutless - fast, yes, but I'd take a new gixxer 750 over any 600 currently made.
After donkeys years on 750's and seriously considering a gixxer 750 I went to the thou.- Fuck me - what a difference - I suppose I'll use over 8000 some time, but, at the moment, why should I! Effortless power is what it's all about and, once I've got it set up for me,the turn in and handling should be near on a par with a 750.
Bruce, Jimmy and Sudeep have said it all but, - the 1000's arent really good at tight twisties - better suited to more open, free flowing roads

The Second to last Ouote covers the Penis thing!
Some quotes regarding the ZZ-R / ZX
"If you've had the demented pleasure of twisting the ZX-11's throttle, you've experienced the hardest accelerating production vehicle sold in America."
Sport Rider, October 1995
"I feel like Chewbacca when I ride the ZX-11, or Han. One fullbore yank on the Eleven's throttle and it's as if I'm in the Millenium Falcon's cockpit, slamming the hyperspace lever home and the Empire's goons weren't able to disarm the hyperdrive."
Mitch Boehm, Motorcyclist, October 1995
"It's shatteringly vivid power is simply astonishing. But it's just as astonishing that Kawasaki has refined it to the point where that power is harnessed so well and so effectively. You never fail to walk away without wearing a broad, beaming, utterly impressed and addicted smile. Practical it is. Bonkers it is too. A bike apart.
Love it."
Bike, October 1995
"So if your prime directive involves getting from point A to B quicker than any production vehicle without retractable landing gear, look no further. "
Motorcyclist, May 1993
"The ZZR-1100 remains the big, fast, versatile bike for the rider with a regular pillion passenger or the desire to humiliate just about every other road user who attempted to match its straight line acceleration. "
Revs
" This reminds me of a guy I know who, when his girlfriend referred to his ZZ-R 1100 as "just a dick thing", corrected her by pointing out that it was, in fact, "a big, black, fast dick thing" "

Maybe another reason for buying big bore is 'tourability'. Yeah, yeah I can hear some of ya saying "Why tour on a Sportsbike, why not buy a Tourer?" but we both (hubby and me) thought seriously about what we would be using the bikes for. Why I'd buy a 1000cc multi:
***TORQUE*** (I hate having to strain my right wrist to get the engine over 10,000rpm). Big V-twins are too much hard work in the twisties. On public roads, I reckon the "point and squirt" technique of cornering is probably safer than carrying huge corner speeds (like on a 600 or 400) anyway!
Why I wouldn't buy a 1000cc multi:
(fear of) ***HIGHSIDES*** (esp on wet roads w/ cold tyres). My old TL1000S has scarred me for life!
At the end of the day, I'd probably get used to the power of the 1000cc multi after a certain amount of riding, so the reason to not have it would diminish.

V-twin should be less likely to highside...bigger time lapse between power strokes...thats why rossi's yam has custom crank...fires similar to a twin.
Your TLS just had crap suspension mate...end of story...I do and have riddin dirtbikes since I was 4...and sliding is something you learn to feel for...predict and control...My TLS when it had standard rear suspension was fuckin twitchy and sudden...you couldn't feel it letting go until a few sec before it happened...the plus side if you could call it a plus...the TLS is relitivly easy to control in a power slide...

Get lost ya pansy.
When you are on a litre + bike "speed limit" takes on a whole new dimension.
So you can't top it out that often.
But hey when you are tailing a group of riders toodling along and the v6 alpha driver decides to demonstrate his prowess to the bimbo and pulls out on ya it sure feels good to leave him standing still. He never tried again.
It also feels good to know that you can out accellerate any production car on the road in NZ despite the fact that they may have spent 10 times (or more) the amount of your bike in an effort to be the fastest.
At the risk of sounding reckless It feels good to effortlessly hit unreal speeds on short carefully choosen pieces of road.
Nothing like the rush of hitting the torque band in top gear at 180kph and feeling the front lift and resisting the forces trying to tear you off the bike.
So the turbo WRX thought he was quick off of the lights, That was until you go past him on one wheel a few seconds later after giving him a head start.
Hmm why would I want a litre bike?

OK another view point of mine... I love my RG150, and when i go for a ride on it i have a blast and a huge grin on my face... Ask loosebruce about his trip, he was on a ZXR250 and i on my RG150... HUGE AMOUNTS OF FUN... or when MR rides the XR600 on the road and i am on my RG150 HUGE... AMOUNTS OF FUN!!! Yes they are underpowered and are limited to 160-180kmh, but fuck they are fun... also in the right hands, they can scare any average rider on a big bike...

My last 3 'main' bikes (other than the two after my accident) have been 750's, GSXR's to be precise. If I didn't get married this year (make that twice) I'd be buying the K5 anniversary model 750. Now I'm happy to keep my present 750, haven't got the most out of that yet, but when I do consider trading to a new model a k5/k6 1000 will be on my shopping list. Reasons include, effortless power delivery, sweet styling, effortless wheelies, king dick factor, speed and acceleration rush.
Sure there will be guys on their 600's who are quicker than me but like I could give a flying fuck. It's my money, I worked fucking hard for it, and I'll buy what I want. Like I said, couldn't give a flying fuck. Enuff said.

WTF??? When did I say you are slow???? I said that, a n00b could look at you as a hero and a top level NZ rider like Andrew Stroud could put you to shame... That'll put you into the group of 99.99% of the experienced riders out there... Which means that I am not catagorising your speed into any particular level... If you mind me saying that a succesful road racer will put you to shame then you must be something special, so sorry for causeing any offence in that case.

that's what happens when you ride thous for too long. But that would go without saying. It's like someone used to a 600 (such as myself) getting on a 250 or 400.. They're still quick to those who are used to them, but when you've had more, downsizing just doesn't cut it. Doesn't mean they're still slow bikes..
not takin offence either. Couldn't care less, I just merely wanted to point that out. I love my orange 636 and it's quick enough for me. Once you're in the twisties, you might not have the same exit power, but you can still have fun.

That's debatable. I reckon Bruce Anstey and Shau Harris would probably be quicker down SH22 than Even the top Moto GP names like Val Rossi... Though Rossi always seems to do well in pretty much anything so I wouldn't be too surprised if he won the Isle of man if he went there and raced..
Race track conditions and open road conditions are still worlds apart though.. It takes a totaly different mind set to go fuken fast from one to the other.

Imagine what he'd do to a top road tyre down 22 if he knew it as well as FF....
I'm pretty sure road tyres are harder than race tyres - they sacrifice grip/stickyness for toughness so that they last longer.
On the track they only need the tyres to last 22 laps or whatever it is and they need all the traction they can get, so they make them out of a softer stickyer compound.
So using a road tyre on the track or getting rossi on a bike on a road tyre isn't going to make the tyres wear out faster than a race tyre. Unless they're softer than race tyres, which I don't know if you can get.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

HAhaha its all about likeing what you ride. I dont care if a 250 stuffs it up the inside (it would be useless of them if they couldn't do that). Just watch out when i get to a bit i can use my bikes advantage. everyone likes to do different shit. I like rear wheel steering but cant do it on a 600 on the road but on a 1k its easy. Sure you are down on mid corner speed but who cares if thats your bag good for you. Have a go on everything you get offered. Dont knock someone elses shit til you have tried it.

Interesting huh,
Not really.
I've always liked mid range bikes because they suit me.
Thou's an the like suit other people, more power to them I reckon.
But one thing thats always amused me has been a couple of mates that got so many tickets on their 1000/1100's that they gave up riding all togeather.
Wouldn't go down on CC an couldn't control their trigger fingers on the big bikes so today they ride a car
The EX Wicked was like that I reckon, couldn't work out that you can enjoy yourself on ANYTHING,,,,,,,If your a biker. :devil2:

That's one reason I like smaller bikes (sometimes, anyway). Tis more fun pushing a bike to its limits than having to baby along something with far more power that you can't use.
Big is good for touring, nice lazy motor spinning slow, and lotsa torque so as not to have to change down. But for fun hooning a little 'un is better cos you can wrap it hard. Figuring out how to get the last bit of spped and cornering from a bike is quite fun. 'Twould be fun on a big one too , if there were no cops and roads were like race tracks. As there are, and they aren't, 150hp is pretty much wasted.
Suspect this is part of the attraction of bucket racing - pushing a bike to its utter limits. Rossi can do that on a 1000 - I can't.

WHO GOT FIRED FOR FUCKEN UP THE FUEL LOAD.MIND YOU COULDA BEEN GIBO OWN FAULT .
I read that it was more in the nature of a mechanical/electronic failure. Some part (of the efi system?) that is supposed to regulate the flow of fuel died and as a consequence fuel usage was higher than anticipated.
That "curse" Rossi put on Sete, "Gibeneau will not win another GP" is starting to look pretty damned effective :-)

Why do you need to buy a mordern litre bike?
are you going to be riding around on a bike that in real terms is going to be only as fast as your mates 600 through the twisties? I'm right arn't I ?
...I want to know what people think?
Imagine the stress I face seeing these in my garage trying to decide which to ride?
Buy one of them and I will tell you which is better, medium or large - and I'll upsize your fries plus a coke.

Although my bike isn't a litre bike, it would've been if the salesman had convinced me to test-ride a Blackybird. I need it because my penis is only average, and I need it extended.
Like the Vifferman, I too was endowed with an average size appendage. Then I bought a Blackbird - and I now have a career as Ron Jeremy's stunt double. I also use my newandimprovedenourmous penis as a side stand for the Biff Bird. Very useful when stationary at traffic lights. Although it's a little dangerous to whip the mighty python out when stationary at a pedestrian crossing. Only last week I whipped out the giant purple warrior at a pedestrian crossing and a group of Green Peace activists tripped over it - declared it an endangered species and stuck a whopping great flag down the end of it. It was sore for days.

The bike matbe capable of that, but are you.
I happen to know a few cars (road driven) that would dust a litre bike of the line and so, you'd be amazed just how well a 4WD can launch with the right driver behind the wheel. And if you want to put your money where your mouth is take your 600 to the night wars drags and see how many cars are in your dust.

I know that 6undy's are bloody quick now adays . But what they make at the motor 1000's have 20+ more Hp at the wheel . Most people that I know that ride 1000cc bike's can ride them not just in a fast line either . And those that ride 600 ride very fast do so because the bike lets them though excellent handling as with the 1000's . No choice has to be made on size to make anyone else happy just yourself at the end of it .

Totally agree with you SP , Having tried a sports 1000 I found it so easy to live with , You don't even need to ride it properly to carry along at a cracking speed. You could be so lazy with them , didn't need to use gears , just use the rollon power. I just didn't enjoy riding as much as a result, but any advantage a smaller cc bike had around corners , was made up within a few seconds on a straight. Is this real motorcycling ? , not sure , make's it too easy , and as a result you don't get the best out of a motorcycle. I think I had the most motorcycling enjoyment carving corners on a 250 two stroke , Ducati that I have currently is great , more in an on throttle / off throttle kind of way. Sounds awesome , better braking and cornering.
Probably a small hand full of Kiwibikers that could get the most out of a 1000cc , I'm not one of them , value my life and others too much for that.
Having said all that , I'd consider one , not for ego reasons , but for the purerly for the reason they are so easy to ride and live with and can carry plenty of luggage.

no, its not really necessary but people buy them for the exact same reason cage driver get big V8's-because they can. the fact that you have more grunt than just about anyone else on the road is an allurring factor, and with the price of 600's and 750's being only a few grand short of a 1000cc bike, they just go ''why not?''.
the fact that you can go faster through the twisties on a 600 makes little diffrence to them, since you have to basically be a choice rider to get the most out of a bike, and very few people can do this on a 600, let alone a 1000 (sorry nick i dont mean you).
personally though? i say go with the 600 and develop those skills a bit more! knee sliders were meant to be scuffed.

Have not read the rest of this, but I'll give you my reasons why I like "Roxanne" the CBR1000F.
She's great over long distances.
She doesn't mind a pillion.
She'll carry the kitchen sink and not complain.
Yet she will still go around the twisties OK on the days I join other riders on a day hoon.
If I was buying a bike for just day hoons or track time, then I would have bought a 600 or 750 full racing type bike (or tried harder to find another VFR750 like the one I had before "Roxanne").
If I really wanted to get a prick enlargeing bike, I buy something totally stupid and unpractical like a "Rocket" or a "Boss Hog". Then again, I love to play with a Blackbird or Busa just for the hell of it:devil2:

Good One Two smoker! You have the Mitsubishi Mirage then!
ZXR 250 into WGTN galeforce headwinds - Not fun, not pleasant at all infact.
SV1000S into WGTN Galeforce headwind - No worries - Still having fun.
Why... More Power!!!
Well obviously you need me to come down and show you how much fun i can have on my RG150 with Loosebruce on a ZXR250.... and in a head wind my RG150 still does 180kmh (on the speedo)
Also as you can see in my name i have a K5 GSX-R600 which has MORE power than a desiel of a SV1000S....
But do you know what!!!???? Who gives a fuck, we like bikes and bikes are fun to ride no matter what size they are.... Loosebruce had a blast on a ZXR250 and loved it even though he raves on about his 1000...

[QUOTE=Dafe]I've got a little correlation to this thread.
If you put a 1980 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatch in front of me - I won't wanna drive it.
A 1992 Toyota Celica - I won't wanna drive it.
A 2000 Mitusbishi Galant - I won't wanna drive it.
A 2004 Luxury model Mercedes - Now you've started getting my attention.
A 2005 HumVee - I'll take that for a drive.
A Ferrari ENZO - Just give it to me.
Now the Bike equivalent.
A 1990 ZXR 250 - I won't wanna ride it.
A 1997 CBR400 - I won't wanna ride it.
A 2004 CBR600 - Now you've started getting my attention.
A 2005 GSXR1000 - I'll take that for a ride!
A 2005 MV Auguta thou - Just give it to me.
/QUOTE]
i totally agree with the correlation. i may not be a good driver but it would be my dream to have an enzo. so why wouldn't this apply to bikes? It is very true that i don't need a thou....but i want one. i will never own an enzo or humvee but a K5 is not out of my reach. People keep on telling me that i'm going get myself killed if i get a litre bike but yet i see lot of lively litre bike riders so i'm thinking this "dead litre bike rider" thing is just an urban legend. hahahahaha!!

If you don't treat your bike with respect and don't get skilled at handeling it, you are more likely to get killed.

I was speaking with a german guy last night who is here on an oe for 8 months and he told me 5000 people aged between 18 and 21 kill them selves each year on motorcycles, no other vehicles involved, I dont know how true this is though.
