View Full Version : Riding this weekend? Maybe not!

By and large, living on the Coromandel Peninsula is pretty sweet with the Coro Loop less than 5 minutes from home but when the weather packs up, it can be a complete bastard . Bike is staying in the shed with ex-cyclone Lusi bearing down on us and it's a safe bet that the power will be off for part of the weekend and there will be slips blocking parts of the loop - we were cut off last year on two occasions. It's getting pretty windy up here right now so everything is tied down with the exception of the cats - let's hope the roof stays on as we're a bit exposed to an easterly. There's beauty in stormy weather though and I took the attached photo from our deck at dawn. It will look a whole world different at dawn tomorrow!

Pfffft, I've just fettled the trailie for some siren chasing tomorrow.
Might go take a gander at the swell in the Bay, always a good indicator of storm intensity. If it's pumping now it will be a hoolie.

Same as you I've stowed everything, put me seedlings in, might as well use the free water, got the candles and torches out. Just need to get some beersies.

Good luck with that!!! Good point about the seedlings thanks - must transplant some stuff in the garden this arvo!

Not nice having to steer a van into the wind. Put some paving stones in it.

My $25 Prorider course for tomorrow has been postponed too...to a date I can't do (and no more till next summer). Stupid cyclone!

They usually fizzle out for Auckland, wonder if this one will too...

Marshalling at Hampton Downs tomorrow... (or not) for an Advanced Rider Training day. Hope the riders bring their water wings and we'll see what happens.

Think I might weight the back of the ute down, depends on what the weather is like tomorrow...

Doing the Mail Run classic ride from Taupo to Napier this Saturday. Riding a 1929 James....slowly...as it can only do 43MPH...off a cliff. Should be a hoot

Ah, "Turn, turn you bitch", the tropical Queensland prayer!

We've had two cyclones this year, they both finally turned away just north of us so we didn't get more than a day or so of 100 km/hr winds, some heavy rain and some flooding during the first one. Mind this one headed your way started up near Fiji so it's had ages over warm water to pick up some energy, and rain.

Keep your heads down. Thinking of you, well actually thinking of our investment property, but all the best for you all as well.

Bit of a swell starting to pick up, not as much as I expected TBH. Not sure of sea direction though. Breaking on the Black Rocks further out which always means it's just gonna get lumpier the further out you get. Apparently the fish are biting like crazy! What do they know?
Just starting to get a bit breezy as I came home with a couple of rain dots on me visor.
Got stung on my eyebrow 2 minutes after I left the house. Bloody bees.

Stayed tuned for our next update & breaking news.

That will be me. I would have thought it to be prudent to re-schedule this one.

If the weather turns to shit as much as the experts reckon, there will still be some clown that will show everyone how big his balls are by riding through the worst of it at 200kph etc.

Methinks I'll take the car to work tomorrow. We are supposed to get gusts up to 130kph. Might upset the scooter in that wind. I hope this turns out to be a fizzer after all the media buildup.

Have to be track side, decision will be made then. I could flick you a txt, but I'd expect you to be there already.

Blackbird... I was the place to be last race round... 8 decided a low side would be fun (grip was apparently low at Point 4)... other marshals at the end of the day asked if I had a sign out reading "Free cuddles". Bastards :pinch:

I had a couple of rides planned for this weekend, like pick up a tag, then over to the Easter egg run at Tauranga. But it looks like I'll just be staying indoors and studying.

Made it to work. (which is a looooooong 15 min away...). So far all good, but wind seems to pick up a bit.

Might go over and have a snoop at the Taupo MotoTT trackday later. That one is all go so far and there is another one planned for tomorrow.

Nadroj has organised a ride up SH43 "The Forgotten World Highway" to Whangamomona for this morning. I wimped out and not unhappy that I did, 'cause five minutes before the scheduled departure it's pissing down.

SH43 can be fun, but in the wet it tends to be all fairly serious.

Did that yesterday (Friday) with the missus as pillion.....all day trip from Palmy..via Stratford; lunch at the pub (gurnard & chips $10 - yum) and went on to Taramanoo. First time over this. Nearly got decapitated by the extended mirror on a camper van on the twisties to the pub - female driver saw me and I saw her - so I kept in middle line on my lane - she must have suffered a bout of attention deficit disorder and drove over the centre line as she rounded the bend and never even knew she was on both sides of the road. Mirror stalk extended another 300mm or so and came close. We also met a logging truck on the gravel section - oh fuck - worst place too - he was descending a slight decline on a bend as we were ascending. Saw him coming so pulled up and stopped in the left "rut" - he sure looked panicked, slowed as he sprayed us in gravel and a cloud of dust that did't abate for a minute. He had no chance of stopping - guess he was doing 60+ and I guess that is normal for these guys. But I wonder if it should be if this is as advertised - a "highway".
Fuckin fabulously exhausting day. Home at 7:30pm and asleep on the couch by 8.

What's the road like between Akaroa and Cooptown? I saw signs out today near Halswell warning of slips and shit out that way.

It's great ride isn't it? I don't recall seeing many trucks in there, just as we'll, there isn't much room.

new tyres this morning from DPC. Weather not that bad on way out, very windy coming back, don't usually get affected by winds on the ol coal burner, but sure as hell did this morning, wifey following did good to get herself home without any mishaps on brand new tyres too.
Settled alot this arvo, can't help thinking we're still going to get something later.

Been out and about this arvo, roads already drying off, a lot of pine needles around. Saw one fence with a branch through it, one vector crew and 3 scooters (they're hard). Wind sounded bad indoors but no worse on the bike (in the built up areas anyway) than some of the windy days we've been having all summer.

Well - it was the only one we saw too..thankfully. No room for mistakes....I read another thread here before the ride - warning of trucks so I was mentally prepared on each corner - and it happened....had we been the woman in the camper van I mentioned or someone in a people mover rather than a bike - we'd be MAC radiator teeth...
Loved the ride. Absolutely loved it. But it was a hard day out - so not likely to go back for more too soon. Maybe next year. The pub is a hoot though..including the village cow - a full grown, milk-laden Jersey cow walked the length of the main drag past the pub and a mob of very amused tourists - took a pat and a rub from a tourist - and mooched on along and turned left at the pub and walked into the haze. Very surreal.
Pic - no cow - except that is the wife and the Sprint.

Still blowing like buggery in Coromandel but think the worst is past. Had some pretty torrential rain and although the harbour is only 100 metres in front of us, we couldn't see it for most of the day. We lost power for most of the morning. There may be some slips on the coast road over the next 24 hours.

All in all, we seem to have got off lightly.

The roads not too bad actually , lots of 'signs' of slips but overall fairly good just take it easy when you see dry mud/clay.

A fulton hogan truck did however lose all its coolant comming up the Akaroa side at the end of the nice sweepy 's' overtaking lane, quite visible, it may get washed off tonight.

I've been avoiding that road since the big floods recently. I'll go there in a few days once it's settled down a bit.
