OK, this is where one has to step back and bear in mind that the culture you are discussing has taken ownership of that word as a collective noun. You may not agree with it, but it is not OK for the people who prosecuted imperialism and slavery on a racial sub-group of the same species because they had developed a philosophy that meant everyone not of European descent was genetically inferior to use. The Bronx Zoo had a human on display in 1902 and regarded him sub-human. A proportion of the population were horrified by this, and he was eventually freed, but he committed ritual suicide. He was an African pygmy. His family were murdered and he was forcibly relocated to Bronx Zoo.
Back to the original topic: How Clarkson recited that ditty is how I recite that ditty. It was taught to me when I began to speak. That is how I remember eeny, meeni, myknee, mo. My kids got taught the tiger version. When they used to come out with it it was a massive personal battle not to use the N word. It doesn't matter if you are personally affronted that "African-Americans" have appropriated a word. Our culture stole far more from generations of Africans. It's a touch over-sensitive to complain about that particular issue, however I think the bastards who have set after Jeremy Clarkson about this are fuckwits. We have seen massive change in cultural perceptions and the definition of racism and inter-cultural relations in the last 50 years. It is incredibly hard to break habits inculcated in early childhood.

I'm more upset about them changing the dogs name in Dambusters than the Clarkson affair, nigger is the typical anglo abbreviation of the Spanish word for black and the dog was black. Yeah Jerry let the word slip as he had learnt the ditty as a kid - so what, it didn't make to air until some scum released it and the media grabbed hold of it. Maybe it is time we stopped letting the media making us over sensitive to dum words. Correction read PC brigade for media.

Exactly. Something that was a common childhood recitation when trying to make a choice is incredibly hard to break. When we said it as kids we had no idea that nigger was one of the "bad" words, although I don't know that it was "bad" back then. Is that a more recent thing?

They're all dead, dude. Gone. And their culture and ethics with them.
I point blank refuse to accept accountability for anyone else's behaviour, especially when I wasn't alive at the time.
And yes, the whole grievance attitude is almost laughably precious.

2nd May 2014, 19:24
No,it's always been bad. Deliberately so. Sub-humans have no real feelings so it doesn't matter kind of bad. Teaching your kids that sort of vileness through rote and repetition is how you perpetuate economic advantage on a generational basis. That's the fundamental evil of that word. We've only just got our heads around it in time to realise that our society is completely built on the straw foundations of a moral system that views people as corporate entities.

Nope, that isn't the issue. See my post above and you'll note it has nothing to do with grievance. It is simply about maintaining attitudes that allow one to justify the exploitation of the majority of the world's population for the benefit of a minority.

But I don't agree that the use of a word that outside of modern America means "black" implies any such attitude. It's bullshit, and I refuse to accept that it's use implies acceptance of any such exploitation.

If I was silly enough to feel aggrieved at an historic culture's treatment of my ancestors I certainly wouldn't be idiot enough to lay the blame at the feet of their children.
And to take offence at the perfectly valid use of a word with perfectly innocent antecedents by a completely different culture is asinine in the extreme.

BTW if people want to bring up slavery the blacks were sold and traded as they were stronger than the white slaves of which there were many.

I find it slightly amazing that Kiwi's find it so hard to understand that a group might use a derogatory word to describe them or others of their group and it's OK, but for someone else not of that group to use it to describe them is insulting.
Do you ever call your mates cunts, wankers, or dirty whores? How would you or they react to a stranger calling them that?
We have a culture here of using words that might be deemed extremely insulting against our friends, but by the same token bump into a stranger in the street and call him a fucking cunt and he is likely to swing for you, despite the fact his mates may have called him that multiple times that day already.
The above is a massive simplification and James Duece already said it way better, but it might help to explain why people of colour can call themselves nigger and white people cannot.
I don't believe Clarkson used it to be insulting and think it was a slip of the tongue which I have to confess I have to consciously avoid when using the eny miny moe rhyme. As others have said the person releasing it is the one that should be jumped on!

To add another spin to it... Why are so many so attached to wanting to use the word nigger? Is there some strange pleasure they get from using a naughty word which will offend a large amount of people? Or are they truly racist and don't want to come out and say they believe black people are inferior so hide behind things like "well my neighbor used to have a black dog called nigger so it is alright to use the word"
I have no desire to introduce the word to my daily vocabulary, nor do I call or describe people as gooks, wogs, chinks, or nagis, if you do maybe you should examine your reasons for wanting to do so?

Don't bother me either, but it's had so many claimed antecedents over the years as to be almost certainly derogatory in origin.
And if we're to use the current example as any sort of guide then any word evoking offense from anyone at all is automatically reprehensible, Period. No matter what it's actual meaning, whether it means something completely different somewhere else or whether the word had been appropriated by some minority sub-culture in the first place.
Nobody has the right to not be offended, nor to dictate etiquette to those of a culture not their own.

nor to dictate etiquette to those of a culture not their own.
Actually the power bloc that NZ identifies with as "the Good Guys" has spent the last 400 years dictating etiquette to other cultures with an increasing number of tools. The leader of the good guys has invaded its neighbours more than 100 times in the last 150 years because they weren't following etiquette. I believe the last 20 years of wars led by the US have simply been about reminding people who has the biggest military and economic penis and Western, White, European in origin etiquette states that no one else is allowed to brandish their penis on the international market while the white guy has his out.
It's past time we told the US to do their zipper up.

Possibly overstated, their politics aren't necessarily any more fraught with malice than any other nation's. They do have the commercial clout to indulge in some of the more nefarious activities others don't, I'll give you that, and their citizens seem unwilling or unable to moderate that behaviour. I'd like to attribute that to the heavy influence of religion and a general hugely self-absorbed, nationalistic culture. But I'd probably be letting my prejudices show.
Oh, and I'm not convinced a majority of Kiwis identify with "the power bloc that NZ identifies with", certainly not to the point they'd countenance seriously dodgy behaviour. I've yet to meet an individual who sides with anyone practicing the sort of bulk public spying the US has been found to engage in for example, of any nationality. And NZ is probably alone amongst modern western nations in having drawn an ethical line in the sand wrt US martial aspirations, and made it stick. In spite of the nonsensical addition of nuclear propulsion to the original anti nuclear weapons stance I'm quite proud of that,

Too many people with too much sensitivity, and too much time on their hands.
It never ceases to amaze me - if people don't like what Clarkson et al (and similar individuals) have to say, why do they watch? It's a TV program. It isn't as if there are no other channels!

I wonder how things would have panned out if ' the Good Guys" had not bothered.
Assuming that the British never bothered with an Empire and the Americans focused on their internal economy.....
The French or Dutch would have taken NZ and probably Aussie.
That is until the Germans took over Western Europe and probably the UK.
Russia and China would still be as they were in the 19th Century
Japan may have taken over China as who would have stopped them,
The Germans could have taken Russia out.
Maybe there would have been no America as it would have been Spanish.
The Arabs and Jew would be doing what they have been doing for 2000 years, like bald men fighting over a comb.
So instead of the Brits and the Yanks it would be Spanish, French and Japs.

because I think most people have some sympathy for what is fairly clearly a feral media beat-up against someone with a massive public profile.
Clarkson did not say "nigger" out loud, and he was reciting a nursery rhyme for goodness sake. One of the nursery rhymes that was recited to me as a kid. And, it did not air in the finished programme.
He did not call anyone a nigger, nor was he racially pejorative. It is arguable that the earlier ("slope") incident was worse.
I actually think that short of jerking off in the chairman of the BBC's shoes (and who knows, he might be into that) JC can do whatever he wants because TG is so hugely popular. 300MILLION people watch the show and it is sold in 200 territories. A quarter of it was being "offended" - but only using that word because of the very existence of this thread. It was largely hyperbole. If I'd written "slightly miffed" or "a portion perturbed" would that have been better for you? I do think some reaction to what I'd seen was warranted. (Whether it was designed to get that reaction from certain viewers or not.)
A quarter of it was to give an example how little I cared about the "offense" this thread is actually about, by saying I was offended by something pretty trivial.

Because they earned it? All by themselves? As you well know market forces aren't what they appear to be and even if the free market existed there'd still be the same issues as the market would dictate "value" in exactly the same way as it currently does... unless of course it lived up to its name and was free that is. Monopolies will still be formed and any form of "legislation" that is implemented to the contrary obviously goes against the free market. What end does it serve to have a minority who have "earned" (questionable use of the word) what they have whilst leaving so many others in the gutter? I know you claim that those who have will invest, but it doesn't seem to be making a blind bit of difference. Seems like them thar folk working at Macca's around the globe ain't too happy either. As the guy from the Union put it (I bet that raised a smirk), once upon a time those sorts of service industry jobs where the preserve of the student and part-time worker (great excuse to pay shit money), whereas these days they're full time positions due to the lack of well paid work available.

For the same reason statistic was in quotes. It may well be a number made up by the plebs to suit their agenda and I guess we'll never fully know for sure... but as pointed out by Voltaire, it likely looks easier to pummel those who can't defend themselves and it'll appease the righteous entitlement brigade and reinforce the notion that they can get away with "fraud" and not be chased.

So the free market that would make commerce fair wouldn't work because the market would dictate that it wouldn't be free?
Fuck, with drivel like that you shoulda been protesting about NZ's inequitable equalities along with all the other fuckwits today.

What you mean never know for sure, seems pretty fucking specific to not be backed up by traceable figures. So I'll just chalk it up to BS concocted by the plebs to pummel those who can't defend themselves.

Stop giving money to parasites that haven't earned it.
From the budget intro: “The future cost to taxpayers of people who received welfare in 2012/13 will be $76 B by the time they exit welfare or retire. About three quarters of that cost is due to people who first received a benefit under the age of 20.”
Exactly, what disturbs me are the number of people out there that think the ( any ) Government owes them a living. ''We need more funding, we need more funding'' ad infinitum. Well get out and earn the bloody money just like any self respecting person with a work ethic has to!!!!!! Most of us werent born with silver spoons in our mouths, we have to work hard at learning our vocations and do the hard yards.
If all the money that is continually being paid into revolving door treaty settlements ( with continual revisitations and top ups ad infinitum ) was instead redirected at retiring national debt and focused into enterprise and industry that is productive ( rather than speculative ) we would be a lot better off, AS ONE colour blind nation.
It is a lie that we are doing what we are doing. We could be as wealthy as Norway if we worked at it.

Like anyone with a sense of fair play I am averse to big corporates that ride roughshod over everybody. NZ is ( was ) a country of small businesses and all of the niche companies that do so well could be thriving ( and employing people to do something truly productive ) if there was less inhibitive red tape and significantly lower taxes.
Mining of the sea bed and ramped up oil exploration is something we should be doing hell for leather as long as much of the profit is kept in NZ and creates local jobs

I grew up in the city and in the country and remember small enterprises very well along with the attitude that went with them. It's all but dead and that death is here, living and breathing in NZ and I'm sorry to tell you that it is only going to get worse. Can you deny that given that you've seen it yourself (both in the UK and here) or at least must have seen it yourself in order to make the statement. The ideology isn't just knocking on the door any more, it's a fixture and it's kept in place by our politicians. The system used to vote them in won't matter. I'd be quite happy to ditch the govt if only to laugh as the free market gets raped my monopoly after monopoly even more quickly than it currently is. You must see this? If price point is everything to the consumer, which it pretty much is, then monopolies are an absolute guarantee irrespective of market structure/tariff/red tape/taxation etc...
I don't agree with mining the seabed and oil exploration for profit, more for the sensible use of the resources (primarily locally), IF we were absolutely hell bent on keeping as much of the profit in NZ as possible, then where are the training facilities/platform production facilities/training programs etc...? why aren't we borrowing to set up that type of infrastructure given that it's such a money spinner? I'm going to plump for monopoly here.
And as always, I'll choose provable figures over simplistic confirmation bias any day.

I verified 3 of the figures using documents from DWP and Parliament. Some of the DWP fraud is due to people having spent money that they had been overpaid by the govt. They want it back and therefore call it fraud when they can't get it back. Diddums. They should have software that works these days. You need better stories... or more likely, a little trust... man.

Do you think that will be allowed in the age of planned obselesence... We used to have light bulbs that never burned out...
Once electric goes mainstream only 'approved' cars and battery systems will be allowed to be plugged into the grid. This will be enforced via smart meters.
The load on the electric grid will be massive so their will be restrictions on usage.
Once the battery/capacitor gets near its endlife it will trigger some kind of service light that you will have to pay and approved dealer to reset and change your battery to new one...

As for the swapping of the batteries. Tesla are working on a "7 year swap" where you can just swap the batteries out for a % of what the car is worth every 7 years. If value drops - so does the cost of a swap out. Interestingly enough - there first prototypes are still good, 9 years on.

Tesla S85 looks awesome. Only negative things I have read about them is the airconditioning being a little weak. I think it costs around $20,000 less in refill costs compared to petrol over 160,000KM period. A replacement battery pack is around $15,000 and should last 10 years although in 10 years time battery technology will have moved on even further.
The really nice thing is that you can punt around with the economy of a small car engine but still go from 0-100 in just over 5 seconds if you feel the urge.

Having sat in one I can attest they are pure awesome. MASSIVE amounts of storage, 7 seats (back 2 are even relatively comfortable) and if you budget for 45 minute fill up (i.e. eat some lunch etc) then refueling isn't that bad either on long trips.
If you pay for the supercharger stations - you get unlimited refills for a flat fee ($2000) so if you don't mind taking a 20-45 min break every week or so to fill up, it will cost you nothing more in power. Most people spend lots more on 7 seater cars in terms of gas (I'm looking at a CX-9 which is going to cost me 2-4 times that a year).
They also have the P85 if you want to do 0-100 in under 5 seconds.
