View Full Version : Scramblers

I remember the scramblers of my youth. Fun times fatting along the footpath etc.

Guess the Trumpy is the closest factory one around. DR misses out it that it looks too dirt. With the USA fashion crowd having thrashed choppers, bobbers and working on café racers now, maybe the scrambler will be next?

Anyway - I like them. Some examples to strain your undies over.

I am a big fan of them having owned a Triumph Scrambler.

The big advantage for my short arse is I can ride them. Most dirt bike seats are level with my nipples. mmmm nipples.

I also really like the tracker style. head on over to Bike EXIF: its where the cool shit lives.

Dave has done a review on the Triumph Scrambler.
They are a Bonnie Hybrid.

Page 1 of 1300 odd pages is found here, it starts with a review.

There are not many used Scramblers for sale...

Back in the 70s, Ducati manufactured a scrambler based on the 250 Mk3 - I had a road bike version.

My very first bike was a Triumph Trials Cub... Not a scrambler, but not really a trials bike either. Great fun though.

Ariel made off-road bikes using the Red Hunter engine (although others used over-bored 350cc NH bottom ends). Sammy Miller's bike, GOV132, was a trials bike, but there was also the HS5 intended for scrambling.

I like the look, and have found that for an on/off road bike, a scrambler rather than a moto-x seems to transition better.

More, off the right path. They go out a couple times a month, and get a damned good thrashing. My one (pictured) started life as a very bent GL145.

I'm a 5' 5.5'' gurl with a 32'' leg, ride a DRZ400.. bike is nowhere near my nipples, maybe you need to man up and learn to ride a bike without having to put both feet down at every intersection...

As is well known I'm a huge street scrambler fanboy.... I just love mine to bits...

Back in the day we had a shed full of proper off roaders including my Norton engined beast. It was a 500cc Dominator engine in an Aerial Huntmaster frame, Triumph gearbox, Norton long roadholders with a 21” rim up front and a James gas tank.. (phoar) Open primary, straight pipes and a shit load of FUN....

It certainly put the basic back into basic biking even by 60's standards...

I can't find the exact one but here is another.

That was done by Denny Berg of Cobra for Honda USA to demonstrate what could be done with their VT750 platform. The S not the shaft drive C version.

You can pick one up ex-demo for like $11k. Great basis for a custom bike I reckon.

Gwan you know you want to.

All you need to do is:

re-lace the wheels to say 18 and 19 inch (or, get one of those Grimeca 4LS drum brakes then do the wheels)

longer shocks.

new subframe.

off roady tyres.

investigate the gearing.

tank and sidecovers (I always like the oval number boards look of a 70's MX'er.

handlebars and controls.

go ride.

Shouldnt cost more than say $25k all in.

edit: here's the other one he did around the same time. oooh errr missus: http://www.cycleworld.com/2011/01/27/cobra-custom-honda-rs750-flat-tracker-special-feature/

Can't comment on the XR883s, but there's obvious comparisons to be drawn with the XR750.

I'll have a dig around tomorrow and see if I can find pics of a similar bike a friend in the US owned - a XR750 lookalike, but with a 1000cc engine.

Sorry. A bit OT - these are flat trackers, not scramblers.

Can't do 50 ks at the moment. 40kph on the speedo is all can be ridden, anything over that and the trailer waggle turns into it bouncing from side to side. TERRIFYING fucken thing to tow.

So it's getting a more rigid chassis, and about a meter long draw bar.
