We have a 96 Laser GLXi that is using a huge amount of gas. On my old commodore and my maxima I can manually get a diagnostic code from the computer. Can I for the laser? Or does it need to go to a dealer for that?

Yeh nah, there's a little levery thing near the speedo you can get manual diagnostics from; take the derivative of its motion to find the fuel useage rate...

Check your choke if it is Carburettored.
Our old telstar used to do similar and choke was being stuck on, does it run on?

EFI mate. Only getting 360ks out of a tank when it should be early 600s.
Will take it to a auto sparky next week and get a read done on the error codes. Not throwing up an engine check light.

If the O2 sensor is not working they will run on the choke, you can normally tell by ruff running, and smell of the exhaust and sometimes a bit smoke
Easy and cheap to through in a new sensor

I may just do that. Once I find it.

It will be in the exhaust pipe, look for the wires that run to the pipe.:niceone:

I guess info a Mada 323 would also be suitable - and no I don't have anything to help.

I had an early 90s 626/Telstar gas-o-holic that got cured by a new autochoke. Seems pretty likely the O2 sensor could've been a culprit within the autochoke to make it run rich.
Don't pay any money on it in a hurry anyway, old bLasers are a worthy icon. Someone'll help you out.

Usually both, and better service (not as many blank looks as you get from Ripco staff)

The Auto chokes often do that.

Just take the O2 sensor out and buff it clean. Quite often all they need and worth a try.

True that, the guys at bnt seem to actually understand what the part is that you want, rather than what's the rego number and i can't find it on the picture on my computer, but i can sell you some flash anodised fittings for your hoses bro

No wiring heading to it or any tucked away close by. Starting to wonder if it has an O2 sensor.

Hmmm, I'd look up a loom diagram for your car and see where the wires are supposed to come from and colour and go from there.
Often these are bypassed by plugging the exhaust usually with an old spark plug and a resistor or a jumper on the end of the leads. The lead is usually under son insulation tape back at the root of the loom. Seen that a few times on used fords / mazdas. Especially those services in new Lynn.
I ain't a mechanic but saw this a fair bit working at the car yard, looking at trade ins.

If the 02 sensor is disconnected or covered in crap, the ecu should switch to limp home mode and the engine check light will come on, I would have thought. Are you sure it is the 02 sensor? Have you had a look at the maf sensor, If you do get into it, dont touch the sensors inside, just clean with carb cleaner.

Have cleaned them with MAF cleaner a while back.

The normal three offenders
- Timing (you have not mentioned rough running / lack of performance so ruled out)
- Not enough Air (air flow from go to wo)
- Too much fuel (injectors, efi etc issues less likely, sensors wrong / bad info to efu probably)
If Carb then a good old fashioned tune up, known issue for Fords is choke
If injected then start from o2 / Airflow and work your way in.
You've got to start somewhere, O2 Sensor has been mentioned so find it and work your way back from there.
I've found 02 Sensors half way down the exhaust system under cars before.
Easy to test it (vid below) are real bastards to get out.
