I had the most amazing news today! To say I am proud does not even begin to explain how I am feeling. My big (little) girl got her marks back after submitting her thesis at the end of her Masters degree.

FIRST CLASS HONOURS!!!!

She tells me she has a Master of Arts, with First Class Honours.

Specifically it is a Masters Degree with First Class Honours in English, specialising in creative writing...

or something...

OMG! I am so, so proud of her!

Congratulations Rachy, I wish Grandma was alive to share this with.

Way to go Rachy, that really does take some doing.

In this age of dumbed-down tertiary education, it's great to see somebody gaining a proper degree. Congratulations!

Well, she tells me she is about halfway done with her first novel. She is actually the editor of Nexus Magazine at Waikato University so writes a bit for the magazine, she also writes poetry and has had a bit of that published as well. Who knows where she will end up. Exciting future ahead I am sure of that.

The thing is you have to try, you have to be inspired.

I was always good at English at school. I got a good mark at 5th form and then dropped out.

Maths, now there is a thing...

Ended 5th form with 25% average at the end of the year. Achieved 40% School C. Figured I could do better if I tried in 6th form. Actually paid attention and tried. Got 38% for the exam :wings:

I have made my living crunching numbers, go figure?

Yeh, but seems like cheating when you're doing a writing degree anyway...

lol, well all academic writing is creative writing in its own way. You have to tell a story in a way that makes sense and is underpinned by theory and evidence.

LOL I feel for you. I got an unexpected 74% in School Cert maths and thought 6th form maths would be ok. Disaster. Just appalling.

I now have to counsel my over-achieving Year 12 (6th form) daughter who was aghast at the NCEA II maths exam. She (like Rach) is a winner and hates low marks. But she is still in with a chance to be Head Girl or once again Outstanding Student of her year.

Anyway the jump from Year 11 to Year 12 maths is huge and Year 13 is university level.

Incidentally, when I was in practise I regularly mucked up double entry statements and had to get our accounting girl to help me. I know they are simple for accounts people but damned if I could ever work them out. You'd shame me in that department Anne.

And after getting 51% in SC English I was a paid writer for about 12 years ...

The school system was and still is, a complete farce ...

I agree in large parts. Too many of us failed at school only to have a pretty cool life outside of it. It is all about the desire to succeed. I know a young man who dropped out with no school qualifications. By young I mean 25ish. He has drifted around in hospitality type jobs for a few years. He just finished his first year of a business management degree with an A! He is delighted as are all of his other parents.
