View Full Version : Alarm Installation

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone out there would be happy to help me install an alarm on my bike. I brought the alarm off TradeMe so it's not a big flash expensive alarm, but will still do the job.
I have no electrical/wiring type experience, and the instructions on installation make no sense to me (plus the translation isn't that great).
If anyone is keen to help me out, I'll be happy to pay for gas (if you wanna come over to my place... but I have no tools) and also shout some beers or something
Thanks in advance

If you can find a wiring diagram I can probably help out on sunday some time. Even if you can't find the diagram, it shouldn't be too hard to track down the different feeds that it requires. Can you please post the manual to the alarm here?

It should be on that CD I sent you..
"15-electrical-system.pdf"
page: 23 "Ignition System".
To anyone who does it, you will find that the wires are the wrong colors think its a year difference, but all you need is a multimeter and you can find what you want fairly easy...
The bike has a postitive igniter... :hitcher:

thanks for posting that John... yeah that CD you sent me... :( I don't have a comp at home and work has removed the CD players/burners from the PC's because someone was stealing data last year and selling it to our rival company... so I havn't even been able to look at the CD yet...
Ok the Alarm is:

As soon as our graphics chick gets in I'll ask her to scan the small instruction manuel and post it on here :)

yeah, happy to give it a go. I'll look it over etc, and if I'm more than 20% confident, I'll go for it ;)
I'll see what this weekend it like and let you know, unless you have anything else in mind. Would prefer a weekend (Sunday I guess, cos you work Saturday, don't you..??) since I have no idea how long it'll take, and the daylight is better than the dark

Sweet thanks :) I'm not sure what the weather is going be like on Sunday... but yeah Sunday would be best for me (unless your planning on going on the Run for the Burns children at Middlemore)... or Saturday afternoon perhaps (I usually finish work at about 2-3pm on Saturdays).
The good news: Happy to pay for gas and beer (or preferred drink)
The bad news: Don't have a garage/car port and I doubt I have the right tools required.
Edit: Also would you mind if it was an "open" alarm installation in the sense that anyone interested can come along and watch incase it may be useful to them in the future?

I have installed that exact alarm on my bike - not for any reason other than the insurance premiums.
Having said that, ghey features like remote start are quite fun to play tricks on the unsuspecting folk who walk up to the bike when it's parked in public and in range of the remote..... :devil2:

Yeah...sux doesn't it? but don't even try debating this with the insurance company.
Most people do realise the futility of an alarm but it lowered my premiums, so i did it. It does actually help when someone gets a bit too inquisitive and goes to sit on the bike or fiddle with it or something, plus i hope that it makes it more obvious that the bike is immobilised.....then again who pays any attention to car/bike/house alarms these days anyway?
I picked up the alarm for about $200....just a cheapie.

That sucks dude... but like allun said... insurance purposes mainly... 90% of the time when I'm not on my bike it's outta sight and hearing range so alarm won't help me much either if anything happens... but whats there to loose... (besides the bike)
I brought my alarm off TradeMe for $99.

forgot about this..
Rudolph, we sorted it (if you read the posts) on the 24th sept.. but thanx for the offer..
Allun, I had two issues with it, I was going to PM you with, but might as well just outline it here.
1) the remote start. Couldn't get it to fire off the remote. I attached the start wire from the alarm to the wire coming from the push button on the handle bars (thinking logically), but it wouldn't fire. Which wire did you attach it to?
2) couldn't get the thing to talk (brown wire to ign acc power). Found and tried several lines (and blew a fuse), but wasn't happening. Don't know if that's a blessing (it says 'Welcome to your motorcycle' as the ing is switched on...).. Don't know if PF wants that bit working.
However, I did get the alarm wired in, lights flashing, alarm chirping and being set off when someone sat on it. So that's the primary goals. And, as an added bonus, the bike still started and rode off, even after I had touched it!!

The brown wire is so the alarm knows when the bike is on or off - I connected it to an accessory wire (any wire that goes from 0V to 12V when the ign is switched on will do). I should have mentioned - MINE DOESN'T TALK! Couldn't get it to talk no matter what i did, so I think they are just a different version of the product that is mislabelled or something....as you say, i think it's a blessing rather than a problem IMHO!
As for the remote start, there are 2 possibilities - the bike either runs negative start or positive start signals from the starter button - most likely positive. You select which polarity signal you want the alarm to put out buy connecting the blue wire with the bullet type connector on it to either the red (positive start) or black (negative start) wires with the bullet connectors on them (this is at the alarm box). If it's not working, swap to the other type of start signal (5 second job once you get to wherever the wires are hidden away now!)
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=15935 (attachment.php?attachmentid=15935)
The only other thing it could be is that you got the wrong wire from the handlebar start switch.....unlikely since there's probably only one wire from it rather than 2.
To start the bike, the alarm turns off the ignition disable, turns on the ignition, and pulses the start line for about 1.5 sec. It's a bit weird to come up to the bike and put the key in (bike already running) and turn it to ON (bike still running) ..... and when you stop, you'll turn the key off, and the bike will stay running until you hit the alarm disarm button!
So what i do is start it remotely, then when i get to the bike i put the key in and turn it on, then hit the alarm disarm button before i ride off....

I found an acc line and wired it to that, but nothing happened as it explained. Can't remember if I left it there or removed it and taped it up..
I found the starter wire with the volt tester (a bulb inside a sharp sticky thing. Need to buy a proper tester), which lit up when I pressed the starter. So I thought that was the easiest choice. I'll see about the other wire running to it (must have two wires, one each way) and see if that's the trick. Might just have been wired up on the wrong side of the signal/loop. Starting to make sence now actually..
PF, if you want to pop round again, I'll have another look and get that bit working..

If the test light lit up when pressing the starter then that's the bugger you need....most likely you just have the wrong option selected on the alarm. Swap it to the other option and hopefully that's all there is to it :done:

didn't use the bullet plugs. The light blue wire in the wiring loom. There wasn't anywhere in the bikes' loom that used the same plug as what was used on the alarm. And it wouldn't reach that far either. Might relook at the diagram. It said that those bullet connectors were optional

So if I run a wire from the + and - bullets up to the starter button to make that fire, where does the blue one sit/attach to then?
notme
6th October 2005, 12:52
How about this then.....
See, in my case (as i think it will be for PF) i need + start, so i connect the RED bullet to the blue wire at the alarm, and the long blue wire that comes from the loom goes to my starter switch.
So the long blue wire from the loom is the one that goes to the starter switch, and it sounds like you have that all correct, it's just the fact that you don't have the correct option chosen for + or - start, which you do by plugging the bullet connector into either black or red at the alarm.

He insisited it was another EARTH wire and has also screwed it under a bolt... and it aint straight no more....
BUT he didn't cut it.....
I did say that its strange to have two earth wires...

Firstly... Thanks again for the help installing the alarm... so far it's working perfectly (cept for talking and remote start).
I don't mind it not talking (I think that option would just piss me off more than anything lol)... the remote start would be kewl though...
*is just happy with my chirping motorbike lol*
I don't mind popping round some time again Bugjuice for you to check it out again... but it won't be for about 2 weeks :(
Fully booked this weekend, work all week next week (7.30am to 8pm Mon - Fri & 8am to 3-4pm Sat), then a birthday bash for mates on next Saturday (15th) so the soonest I'd be free would be Sunday the 16th lol
And that of course would depend on if your free at that stage...
Also... if you wouldn't mind (lol here it comes)
If you wouldn't mind the challenge... I got Sam an alarm for her FXR, same make (Cyclon) but different model (the one you installed on my bike is a C-9... the one I got for Sam is a C-11... it even has a flashing LED light lol)
Anywho... back to work I go *ho hum*

I'll tell ya what I did - I put the black wire that is the ground wire (in the diagram (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=17255), it's the wire that's next to the siren), to a ground point. I put the antenna in the tail fairing away from interference of the rest of the bike. I didn't cut it, I didn't screw it, I didn't curl it up. I threaded it carefully thru some cable ties in it's length.. The antenna comes out of the brain, not the wiring loom

Sounds like all you need to do is plug the bullet connectors at the alarm end together, so that the red bullet goes to the black one and then the remote start will magically work :niceone:
If not or if any other probs I absolutely don't mind helping - you just have to make the trip out Botany way!
My phone number is available under my profile to senior members - Buggy can access it and should feel free to.

thanx Allun.. I'll try connecting the bullet plugs and see what happens (or you can try it PF)..
As for catching up, PF, to have another look, I don't mind at all. The next couple of weeks I'm quite busy too. But the third weekend I might be busy too, helping MR at the race track. But I'll know nearer the time and we can go from there.
And I don't mind installing Sam's alarm too. But I thought you were looking to sell Sam's FXR and get another..?

Sweet thanks :)
Yeah we were planning on selling her bike, but then the finance co. messed us around and we missed out on the ZXR we were looking at... and so we've decided to wait until Feb/March next year before upgrading her bike (Unless we find the right one by pure chance lol... temptation is an evil thing :devil2: )
So for the time being we're going to hang onto the FXR
