Ive had some dark days with the speed coppers though nothing i can complain to much about ie the Waitaki bridge incident etc but recent events as in the last few years have left me scratching my head some, seems i cant do any wrong and as i posted in the speed tolerance thread the other day coming back from the lakes in the ute i round a bend travelling somewhat and theres a cop car coming straight at me but nope nothing:niceone:Today myself and a few mates took a ride up to lakes coming home just passed the Maori rock drawing area theres a rise leading onto a very long straight i pass my mate pull the thing up and crest the rise to be confronted with a cop car and a line of no choice law abiding citizens:confused:some laughter and pointy fingers from the other two as i slow then stop to await my fate...few minutes later still nothing so pull back on to the road and leave:msn-wink:Dont understand it but hey who knows possibly the guy rode a bike...whatever happy new year to ya,maybe the ticket book was full.

I'm am finding the general traffic flow is the same speeds/hold ups as it ever was.
Todays beef was yet another corner cutter, with plate obscured by bikes. To top it off he trys to wave me to overtake on the most dangerous section of twisty road. And it was an HSV holden....
If I see the muppet at bike park there will be words....
We have 50 demerits now if someone blows 250, think same should apply for corner cutters....

Tell that to the dickhead plod who u-turned in front of a car and myself on my bike in the middle of a corner. Ceraintly some very hard braking by the car and a reasonable amount by myself. He then still carries on chasing the car he managed to ping going the other way without even a acknowledgement he did something stupid. The car going the other way was by no means travelling that fast that he needed to endanger all our lives.

Did you follow and have a word (assuming you could do so safely)? Or at least get his number and lay a complaint?

Nah, most people on here would rather bitch about it on the safety of their computer screens, rather than risk actually doing something about it themselves.

Who knows what the car as flagged for, could be wanted crim etc..... it always cracks me up that people think everytime a cop pulls someone its for speed. The paranoia by people when they see a cop car... they usually too busy running around after wife beaters and thieves to be worrying about speed tickets.
A competent motorist should be aware that a cop car may brake and turn to chase someone at anytime. With a two second following distance it shouldn't be a drama for anyone following...
Maybe cop cars need those signs on the back like street sweepers do.... jesus Christ.............

The reason for the dumb move is irrelevant.

And a competent cop will know that not everyone expects them to pull a dumb u-turn.

Sure and a trained cop should know that doing a U-turn on a blind corner is a stupid thing to do. I didn't say we nearly died or anything like that. I said there was heavy braking going on which if the idiot had waited until he was out of the corner and saw that traffic was behind him he would have just pulled over and waited for the 2 vehicles.
Also I find it extremely amazing that in the middle of a corner the cop could detect and decide that the vehicle or person driving it was doing anything other then speeding or was wanted for something else.

Yes when that inherent risk is to be expected by a prudent alert driver...

I guess the middle ground would be that all drivers need to be aware of the big picture. Personally I don't like to follow a patrol car closer than a few seconds for the very reason it may need/wish to execute a U-turn. A patrol car doing a U-turn in a marginal area is no more dangerous than someone droning along with the "eyes on the horizon and the brain in neutral" while maintaining that comfortable 1 second gap me thinks

Hey I was thinking as vehicles are only required to have speedos reading within 10% error rate from new how the fuck can a under 10% allowance be enforced? Say I have a new Toyota XXX and get done for 107 when I have cruise set to 100 - Toyota won;t give a fuck as they are within there legal requirements.

Not sure what the laws are around new car speedo requirements, but I have never seen any car that reads low. I've seen speedos 10% out but it's always been reading high, ie reads 110 but doing 100. You might find they have to be within 10% but must read high if they are not accurate?

I'd have to concur, most do read high, but they do!
The tolerance is widely thought to be 10%. No facts here just opinions.
So if it's a tolerance of 10% from new and it can be either way, I too would like to know how any conviction can be upheld for offences between () tolerance as advertised) and up to the recognised ex norm of 10%.

Incorrect. They are at their place of work so H&S regulations should apply. "No action or Inaction shall put anyone at risk of an injury". Obviously they should be getting taken to court for that alone but knowing them they are probably above normal H&S regulations.

I am not sure what the deal is here but then cars aren't made here so it is probably the same. In the UK speedos were allowed to read too high by a certain margin of error but were not allowed to read too low at all. Imagine the speedo saying 99 when your true speed was 104 and you got a ticket? No car manufacturer would let that happen so they pushed it the other way where it might read 104 when you are actually doing 99.
I am sure you will find something in relevant vehicle standards legislation but I can't be arsed looking cos Britain's Best Baker has just started.

I think I read somewhere that they are allowed to be out by a small margin under reading and by a large margin over reading. For a motorcycle speedo if I am remembering correctly a reading of 100kph is OK if the actual speed is at least 85kph but no more than 103kph. That means 15% out reading too high but only 3% out if reading too low. I think for cars it was 90-103 acceptable when the speedo read 100.
My Burgman 400 when I had it was out a bit, I took 10% off what it said to get my real speed. I could ride at 120kph and know that I was really only travelling at 108kph.
My ST1300 reads closer, no more than 5% out.
I haven't checked my DR650 yet, but I'm getting a Vapor dash and will endeavour to get it as close as possible to actual speed since it has to be calibrated anyway.
