Thats cool, much of a mind fuck being on the other side of the road?

Looks like it would be a bad idea to drop a match.

For me - it's when I go to NZ, South Africa, Cayman Islands, UK. Honestly the worst part is the first 10 minutes. Then your brain adjusts. Parking lots can be tricky too. In a car I get the turn signal and the wipers all backwards.

There were a lot of fires in California when I was there. I saw 2 of them.

Looks like somebody was out riding last weekend! That busa is so distinctive in that colour. Wasn't me behind the camera tho. Asher was out taking photos.

SVBoy, were you out on 400SM? There's a shot but wandering if it's you?

Do you do photography as a hobby or profession? I have been looking into getting a camera as my phone's one is rubbish. But that sounds like a very nice set up.

How long do you spend on photo shop doing the after effects to get them looking like that?

I occasionally get odd paid jobs but it is a hoppy.
Drop by progear in Newmarket - they'll cater to $20'000 or $1500 and have always been top notch with me. Most of my gear has come from their second hand case.

I don't use photoshop but do shoot in RAW and use Adobe Lightroom for the finishing touches. Nothing major though - I'm a firm believer in that what goes into the lens should be what comes out of the printer. I probably spend 20secs on the finished image tops.

Nice photos. Where is Lake Disappear? I have a few cameras, but almost always take photos with my phone when I'm out on the bike. I should make the effort to take a real camera sometimes. Even a cheap DSLR will generally take better photos than the best phone cameras.

Your best camera is whatever is in your hand... I've taken some of my favourite photos with the shittest camera ever - it was in my hand though and far more useful than a $10'000 DSLR at home.

Lake disappear is just down from Bridal Veil Falls, 20km south of Raglan. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Disappear

Been there done that with purchases I should have left alone... once bitten 2x shy.

Took a weekend trip down to Wangavegas. Rode through the night to avoid the heavy rain, which was partially successful most of the trip, and landed there 3am. Not much to see.

Return trip I went up over the Desert Road, not having ridden it since my last Kiwi, not sure which year, but it was at the old six cross.

The mountain was splendid, clear blue skies, almost not traffic until past Taupo.

The first part of the trip was just sublime, the way it should always be.

Then I hit AK traffic building up for rush hour. nuff said.

Pic taken Taupo waterfront back towards the mountains, stopped for coffee.

Nah Bro, I did my usual trick of leaving home without enough dosh to actually get home again. Had to ferret in the bottom of the tank bag for coinage for the coffee (priorities right?)

Thankfully my fortnightly salary went in at noon so I could continue on my way.

Hmmm....maybe I could get a helmet cam detailing such a trip. Gotta be good for at least three utube episodes huh? Reviewing the latest greatest windscreen, or go fast mod should fill up another half an our of bandwidth.

Nothing like the embarrassment of running out of money to make you ride economically.

Ah. Coffee addiction.

The road to Tora Beach, close by Martinborough (Wairarapa), at the summit of... somewhere. It's a sweet little there-and-back, doesn't link up to anything unfortunately. Mostly sealed now but as soon as it turns to gravel, unless you're on knobblies, quit while ahead and turn around.

Ride was Naki to Palmy, over vinegar hill to Hunterville, out the back around Turakina valley. Took a wrong turn, ended up on miles of gravel (always fun two up on a 400kg cruiser) to Fordell. Brunswick road outta Whanganui to Kai Iwi and back to the Naki, 480km for the day. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170519/99396d4e448a617602f49cf90eb371c3.jpg

Not a ride so much as a first go at getting some photos actually riding the bike... a mate and I took turns to ride or take pictures. As he pointed out, owned four bikes now, not one pic actually rolling on any of them. So out we went, found a few nice corners, and had a go.

For those interested... somewhat dated Canon 30D, standard zoom lens with no stabilisation (want that now) with most pics taken at short telephoto ranges. AI focus didn't really work too well so we went to manual and pre-focused the lens, then used motor drive to burst frames on each pass. Manual exposure, too - avoids problems with dark or light backgrounds dominating the exposure.

Pretty mint really, that section of the Wairarapa is just one giant playground. The pub at Gladstone is good, so are the eateries / cafes etc in Martinborough. Petrol can be an issue, particularly after 7pm, there's 24 hour petrol in Masterton but that's about it until Caltex Rimutaka, unless there's something further north in Dannevirke.
Lots of great loops in the district to ride.

Yep I can Vouch for those side ways gusty bits, especially around the Tin Hutt Race Course, (Tiranikau Horse racing course) Long straight roads begging for a bit of wrist, then up she comes and over you'se goes!
Had to steer mum and dads near new Kingswood station wagon out of the ditch that the "little gust" put us into, mum got such a fright, for the first time ever she had nothing to say, until I'd taken nearly a mile to slowly remove the whole rear end from the nice wide, not too deep ditch, not even a scratch.
Since then I've had a very healthy respect for the Wairarapa Winds.

It it was a Holden, no surprises there.

not a ditch, that was the road.

there are a few nasty places for wind, us non locals should keep a look out for, generally in bully's and as the road passes beside breaks in hills. Also close to the coast.

and for the enterprising rider, there are some nice surprise roads to discover.

hence this area is in the good rides photo thread

Did you ship your bike up there, or buy one? We're looking at buying a bike in Ireland next year for a ride, and bringing it home, just sussing costs. Nice ride, Stelvio is just the berries, eh??

Hi,

I saw your post in another thread. I posted a link to who I used.
I shipped my bike, just waiting for it to arrive back later this week, hopefully I cleaned it well enough to avoid any further charges.
Patiently tracking the container around the world.

Having my own bike was definitely an advantage in my mind, my friends both rented. I don't think it saved me a huge amount of money over the 6 weeks I was away when I add up all the costs. I did 12000kms, I haven't factored the cost of servicing and consumables yet.

Stelvio was just one of the many stunning roads we covered, sadly we were a couple of days too early as some of the other swiss passes we wanted to ride were still closed until 1st June.

I'll definitely go back, if not next year, then 2019 as there is still a lot of territory to explore, just scratched the surface.

happy to share any learnings if you have any further questions.

cheers

How does the Gixxer compare to you S1000RR EJ?

Can't accurately say because last time I rode the S1000RR was over a year ago. Only rode it for only an hour too. It didn't have a quick shifter. Felt similar as sports bike but felt shorter and much smaller from seat to the handle bars. Great fun to ride, as most sports bikes are. Oh, the throttle felt twitchy. S1000RR was so user friendly and smooth.

Yes. I've heard thst the Beemer is a little more sophisticated. That the Gixxer is a bit raw and brutal.

I didn't know about the memorial, I'll have to look for it the next time I go there. On that note there's a very distinctive double row of oak trees lining a stretch of Longbush Road, just north of Gladstone. They're huge and form a closed arch over the road. I've enjoyed riding through it for years, it's like a green leafy cathedral with a road through the middle... anyway it's a WWI ANZAC memorial. I'd found out a couple of years ago when talking with a local, there's a tree for every man lost plus two spare in case of lightning etc.

I'll watch out for Whangimoana beach road then. It's similar on White Rock Road (to Tora Beach), a brilliant little Martinborough to nowhere there-and-back with lots of fun twisties. As soon as you hit gravel or the posted black spot, think seriously about turning back. Lots of the locals drive big SUVs towing huge boats on that road, they don't waste time, and it gets downright hairy at times on the narrow bits.

i would have noticed the trees, always slow down for those types of areas.
similar to Fitzgerald’s glade near to rotovegas

theres a nice scaled aeroplane mem near to Gladstone, I will try and figure the location, it’s on a straight bit of road with nice parking. And drop it on here if I remember.

I know the one, it's on the same road that the Gladstone pub and domain are on, go to the pub from Gladstone, go past the pub and around the next corner or two and it's on the left.

I was sent down to CHCH from my NI haunt for a conference.

Great opportunity to take the bike instead of the drama of airports/flights/baggage etc etc and then transport at the other end.

Took a week. Booked. Checked the weather and that was the week Summer ended.

Only got to tour around CHCH and the Lewis, Tasman loop on the return trip. Did Kaikoura on the way down. Much better than I expected.

Cold southern climate that week taught me the tuning was a little lean for this time of year and had to tweak AF screws. Its used to warmer and higher altitude riding normally.

Froze, but really enjoyed what I could get to in the time I had. Vowed must do another trip "overseas" as soon as I can get away again. Bike on and off the ferry was a breeze.

A tiny bit at the bottom of the hill first right hander this side, a small amount about 300meters either side of the hill top , kept smelling acetone (silicone) up there to ?? looks like some sort of coating for frost (??) had been laid down as the road looked damp but wasnt.

One good thing about old bikes is you get that feeling of speed without drifting into walking home territory.

Right hand gear lever with up for 1st takes a while to adjust to.

30+ years ago I asked a pal with an impressive collection of old and newish bikes how he coped with the few having various important controls on the wrong side.

He told me you learn to pay attention, real quick.

Decades later, I'm still not sure about that. Seems to me emergency situations trigger near-instinctive responses, shortcutting conscious thought.

Maybe it's more to do with him driving the museum pieces he had so lovingly restored extra carefully.
