View Full Version : More stupidity in NZ salesmanship

My wife and I decided to get a GoPro camera to go travelling with. I did my research and found the model I want - GoPro Hero 4 Silver. I was on the Harvey Norman website last night at about 10pm and saw this exact one on special - $20 off and comes with a free back of sticky mounts (alleged value $39). So I went in the store a couple of blocks from work today, and the price was back to standard retail ($600) and the deal has ended.

I said to the salesman "would you do me the deal you were doing yesterday".

"No sorry can't do it" he responded. I asked him if he would rather do me the same deal I saw on the website 12 hours earlier, or if he'd rather I walked out empty handed. He literally said he would rather I didn't buy anything at all. So I didn't.

I don't get it - this deal was good enough yesterday, and it's the same stock as they has yesterday. But he complete unwillingness to budge means I'll keep my eyes open (no urgency on this purchase).

Salespeople in this country are such utter retards. I guess that goes some way to explain why he was a 60 year old selling cameras for an Australian department store.

I don't use Pricespy to buy things, generally speaking. The GoPro is a great example - the top 15 or so are companies that have existed for about 5 minutes, and won't be around much longer. Buying from these companies seems great when you save $50, but not so good 6 months down the track when you need a warranty replacement.

Haha, whatever you say, you're clearly the expert on retail.

I was going to just wait for a good deal, but wound up getting one from Torpedo7 - it hadn't occurred to me to look there in the past. $539 plus about $5 shipping. I've had good experiences with these guys, though have never had to warranty anything.

Your rep notification was very exciting and informative, so I'm sorry to have offended you, and apologies for my choice of motorcycle.

Glad to hear you have found a camera, I was just about to recommend this one, as it is just down the road in a proudly New Zealand owned store which has been around for over 130 years. The price is right, and the camera would survive a fall from a bike, helmet, or cot:

I can imagine as you walked away the 60 year old was thinking, "What part of, the deal is finished, doesn't that retard understand?".

This thread should be titled "more stupid customers at Harvey Norman" what part of "the deal is finished" were you struggling to grasp?
I got a sofa from them weekend before last, probably the exact same store you went to & got a flamboyant young chap called Kris who couldnt have been more upbeat & helpful, he even took kindly to a bit of bartering in addition to the discount price because I paid cash & picked it up myself.
Maybe it was because I didnt carry on like an entitled tool.

It's because you didn't get the 60 year old selling cameras for an Australian department store, those ones are the problem.

Never assume someone is working solely for the wages, some people are just there because being a multi milloinare can be boring & a few hours selling a bit of stuff & winding up 'tards provides a bit of welcome distraction.
Also, nobody owes you a discount solely because you have insufficent money to pay the going rate for something.

WTF had a look at the Pricespy link??

Within the top 7 there is Camara and Camara. Expert Infotech (who I bought from 5 years ago).
And the biggest selling computer retailer in NZ PB tech??

Bang on!
Sales are usually set on quantity of product.
If they had 100 in stock then it's time for a sale price.
If yesterday they sold 95 of them then it is time to quit the sale price as stock is now too low to remain at that price.
Deals only last as long as stock levels are high enough. Simple maths really.
Me, i would have been saying, "wish i had dropped in a day earlier"

You know salesmen have the attitude test similar to roadside coppers right?

Also, if you weren't such a shitter you could get that camera for $480

We've never paid marked-up price on anything at HN for years. Just send in the missus who always goes for the "what's your best price" jugular, and they're always willing to move - even when on special and marked down to start with! Just depends on how keen they are to make a sale - over here, the more product they move, the happier the boss is, the more they earn. As long as they aren't losing money......

Up until that point you seemed like a garden variety whinger, but there you made a crisp transition to judgemental pillock.

If if the ownership base of the store is a problem for you, shopping there seems like double standards to me.

Even I can tell that giving ultimatums up front is a dumb way to haggle, and I can't haggle for shit.

I've found it's all about the approach. If you come across as an asshole expecting something you get fuck all, asking politely and you might be surprised, not forgetting that the vast majority of kiwis never bother to ask at all.

The other point here is, when being paid minimum wage or thereabouts, how many fucks would you give?

I had a similar experience with HN in R-Vegas when I wanted to buy a phone. Guy was totally disinterested. I bought a phone, a tablet, and accessories for both from his competitor across the way. I'm sure that really showed him and his boss the error of their ways lol.

I had a customer order a tyre off me a while ago - after I explained to him in words of one syllable why I couldn't match the price of a certain shop up in Auckland. (Especially considering I fit and balance tyres I get in for free).

The next day when he came in to get it fitted he started demanding that I match the price of the other shop.

I ended up telling him I'd keep the tyre and he could fuck off somewhere else.

Bad customer service? Maybe, but I felt good about it anyway.

Soon as the cunt gets charged $50.00 odd dollars to fit and balance it, he'll prob have another whinge to the other shop.

Salesman is probably paid less than $20 / hour for maybe 10 customer transactions / hour. He deserves a medal.

Salesmen/women need to be properly motivated by numbers rather than an hourly rate. That way, everyone gets their full attention.

Harvey Norman is Australian yes, but I understood that the individual departments within the store are locally owned. Sort of like a franchise system?

And they will move on price. If they are offering 36 months interest free and you want to take advantage of that, you will have to pretty much pay the ticket price. The faster you are prepared to pay the more they can move and the further the price comes down. Cash is king.

I've bought several things from them mainly because the local store is a few hundred metres from my house. (I have smetimes managed to get free delivery because of that.) The service though is very variable from department to department. The guy who runs the computer department here knows very little about retail and his staff know about as much about computers. The signs advertising specials are usually out of date and the specials are different. I don't buy anything there any more. The other departments are run pretty much as you'd expect and the staff are fine.

They do seem to have a high staff turnover and there are different staff each time I go, possibly because of the wages, but possibly 'cause I don't go very often.

Agreed but I don't think it's just those peeps in sales. Aren't quite a few of the trades labour rates charged by the hour? And then there's the 'call out fee' for onsite repairs.

Most of the trades I'd say. But this thread was/is about sales people in stores etc.
