I am totally biased on this. Been listening to Marc Bolan this weekend and own a TDM with 65'000 km+ on it, nearly run in. Parallel twins are de rigeur at the moment and sound splendid. Anything built to compete with Ducati has to be fun. They go round corners.
Somebody who actually knows what they are talking about may pop along with an unbiased onion.
Edith. Just looked at pics of the other bikes. I rest my case.
High maintenance? I just put petrol in the TDM and check the tires. Basic servicing, maintenance and get on top of any abuse or worn bits and they run like a Swiss watch.

The trx is a great bike but shite for a pillion unless ya only going down to the dairy.
The Suzie 750 is a boring reliable comfortable bike but good-ish for pillions.
The rf, forget it, too small, under powered rev head.
The other yamie, fook knows????
If ya want an interesting bike that does pillion well, an old CBR thou or a VFR, or yamie 1200 Xjr thingie perhaps?

And ... in your considered and experienced opinion ... the TRX850 is neither big or fast for one such as you with VERY limited riding experience .. ????????????? :bs:

from some one who has to fix these things when they go wrong my two cents
#1 Suzuki GSX750F 1999 done 76.000kms carb slides and needles wear badly, at the right mileage to start having carb/running issues
#2 Suzuki RF 2001 400 done 36.000kms jap import, parts are getting hard to get and bit overweight for the power , and same carb problems coming up in the next 10 to 20 thousand kms
#3 Yamaha TRX850 1995 done 62.000kms great bike just make sure the valve clearance has been done, can burn exhaust valves if running to tight exhaust clearance
#4 Yamaha TRX 850 1997 done 64.000kms same as above
#5 Yamaha FZX750 - 1996 done 41.000 kms try getting parts for it, engine parts are all right as similar to fz750 but the rest of it will be a problem. short production and nothing else the same in the Yamaha range will make parts a problem

The TRX850 is certainly not for a novice rider, ( im not being an asshole I've owned two and raced one in battle of the twins )
Its not forgiving as modern bikes and certainly needs to be ridden with conviction.
Stock bikes are limited to 180kmph ( the R versions had the 240kmph speedo )
Stock bikes have very soft front ends ( change that ) otherwise tank slapper central
engines are bullet proof, though need good oil and the valve clearances / buckets need to be done @ 60,000
YZF750 running gear bolts in.

Probably right, though both bike's are just a tad over 100hp and very user friendly. I owned CB1300 three years after buying my first bike.
The irony is, I bought a Motorcycle Trader mag when we got home from spending everyday on a scooter in Rarotonga, asked Anne for her credit card and bought a bike. :niceone:

Not sure how others checked OP's previous experience but if it's true that you've only done some scootering in Rarotonga - for your sake and the sake of the rest of us, start on something small, light and forgiving!!
LAMS exists for good reason mate. I went through under the old 250cc / 70 kph limit learner scheme. The 70 limit was retarded but the 250cc restriction saved my arse more times than I care to remember.

Yep something along those lines i reckon, leave the TRX be eh there getting few and far between and deserve better....no offence intended, whilst at it dont go near a TL1000S cheap as chips but the mrs will hate it not to mention there prone to tantrums according to motorcycle magazines and everybodys brother in laws best mate who knew a bloke that rode one.

Yeah maybe ... I have a couple of bandits and the same engine is in the 750 Katanas ... the engine does have a long and successful production run. Yes they are reliable ... and maybe comfortable for some - one of my mates has one and he doesn't find it comfortable - he is either looking to modify it or sell it ..
The boss of my local also told me a coupe of weeks ago that every Katana he has sold has been dropped - every single one ... I'm not sure what that tells us.
