View Full Version : Gearbox oil entered engine

Evening All,
I'll try to make a long story short. I recently sold a Suzuki TF125 and organised transport at mates rates whereby the bike was transported on its side (partly elevated on some sand bags). Some gearbox oil leaked during transport, the recipient topped this up added fresh fuel and went to start it. Apparently it ran a couple of times smoked like hell spat some oil out the exhaust manifold and died. My conclusion is that the gearbox oil leaked into the cylinder.
He took the spark plug out and cranked the engine to clear it and then tried several times to start it but it wont run. As I result I now re-own the bike if/when I decide to drive the best part of a 1000ks to pick it up and bring it home. It recently had a top end re-build so I'm hoping its not completely stuffed but can anyone give me some direction as to what sort of damage would have been caused and what the likely fix is going to be (if its another top end re-build she's going to the wreckers....)
Lesson learned - pay for professional transport and never lie a bike on its side:facepalm:

Did he replace the plug?

I doubt if the issue is serious. I've transported bikes many times that way.
Check for spark first.
Clean the plug (does it have points .. ??)
And check there is fuel flow. The filter in the tank may be blocked.

I sold a quad once and new owner complained so much about her 600 purchase I gave her money back on the condition she returned the brand new battery next time she was in town. Been a year now. Im starting to wonder if she has plans to come to town at all. I guess she is happy with her free quad now.

As far as I know he 'cleaned' the spark plug but I'm not sure if he actually replaced it. Must admit I was kind of hoping that maybe a new spark plug could be a cheap miracle fix!
At this stage I haven't got the bike - its in Christchurch and I'm in Cromwell. I've arranged to get it dropped at my inlaws once I refund the cash but it is likely to be a few weeks at least before I can get up there with a trailer and bring it back and have a good look at things myself. At this stage I'm just trying to confirm whether the potential damage and $$$ to fix is worth the trip to pick it up.

As long it has spark in all the right places ... and is getting fuel. It should run.
You might need to drain and flush the carb. (a blast of easy start down it's throat might help)
I can't imagine why a trip on it's side would cause a major issue.

There should be fuck all wrong with it, a trip on its side wont do anything, cleaning the plug is a waste of time he should have put a new one one and checked for spark

why not get a local mechanic to sort it, cheaper than 1000km, time etc, and then it's sorted by a proffesional.

Because the guy who bought it simply wants his money back as its not going. I haven't got anyone in CHCH who can take it to a mechanic to get checked out + having to refund the buyer I haven't got the coin right now to spend on a mechanic. Plan is to tow a trailer up to CHCH when I go up for the mother in laws 70th in a couple of months and get it back home and get the local guy who did the top end re-build to check it out for me - if its not as simple as a new spark plug.

Hi Caseye :wavey:
Hmmm:confused:...I do have a mate with a bike trailer I could arrange to borrow for pick up.
If DeadeyeDent wants me to arrange something, no problem at all, plenty of room in the garage (And its secure), and I do love to play mechanic (Dosn't sound too serious to be honest)...or I could also drop it off to Roger @ road & race in New Brighton, and have him check it out if he wishes (Best mechanic in chch, and great prices!)
your call DeadeyeDent ...Im always happy to help out our fellow KBers :D
-sup Caseye :niceone: (Recovering from Winters 3rd Birthday party yesterday...mini tornado/kids destroyed my house ) - stay well mate

Hi willythekid. Wow, that is a hugely generous offer and really appreciated. Bloody amazing the good buggers you meet on forums like these:niceone:
It is probably going to take a week or so until the refund is sorted and I can organise to pick it back up but if you were able to help me out in that regard (and of course at your convenience) I'd make sure that there are some beers in it for your trouble. I'll flick ya a PM once things are sorted between me and the buyer and go from there.
I'm hoping from all the comments above it is going to turn out to be simple fix, will keep the fingers crossed!

Thought I should give an update to finish off this thread:
Willythekid is an absolute legend - he has picked the old mud bug up for me and after checking the float bowl, cleaning the spark plug and checking fuel & spark he tells me four or five kicks had her running again :2thumbsup
I'll head up from Cromwell in a couple of months time to pick her up and bring it back and I think keep it for when my boys are a bit older rather than try and sell it again;).
Anyway, just want to say another big thanks to Willy and to everyone else for their advice and putting Willy in touch with me initially. Its bloody amazing the good people you meet off these forums and I hope I can return the favour / help someone else from here one day.
Cheers
