Offender will probably get a slap on the wrist :argh:, but good work to the officer managing to apprehend him on foot in all the get up that he would have been wearing.

The attempted strangling of a police officer on motorcycle patrol in South Auckland has raised concerns about under-equipped staff working alone.

The incident happened around 3pm on Tuesday, after the officer chased the fleeing driver in an allegedly stolen vehicle, which had failed to stop in Manukau.

The vehicle was abandoned in Otara, and the man fled on foot.

He was then chased by the officer and a struggle followed, during which it was alleged the man tried to strangle the officer.

After a brief further foot chase, the officer was able to apprehend and restrain the man until help arrived.

more selective reporting designed to favour the 'give cops guns' movement?

In Cahoots with the NZPA's Mr whatshisface.
Police should always be in pairs these days, as for arming with anything other than a PR 24 or good old fashioned log of wood, Individual Constable's decision to up skill to whatever weapon they think appropriate, is what I'd be comfortable with.

Yup, I'm happy with that concept as well.
Several friends have stated that when it is necessary for plod to be armed, then they will do the same.
Obviously it isn't safe out there for cops, so blatantly it is not safe forcitizens' either.

These friends are quite law-abiding people, not your run-of-the-mill gangsters.

It's NOT Ok for everyone else to be armed .. it's ikllegal unless you are hunting or at a gun club, or the weapons are stored.

And the cops are fucking useless with guns .. killed an innocent bystander on the Dorkland motorway - missed a rottie when they were firing automatic weapons ...

When I was in Hawke's Bay a cop went to a house in Bay view investigating a complaint about a dangerous dog .. the dog ran at him up the driveway, the cop pulled his pistol, fired and missed the dog at a range of seven feet (I measured it). The bullet bounced off the driveway, went through the window of the house and into a wall above a couch where a baby was sleeping ..

many incidents - I would not feel safe with armed police around. I don't trust them

And if the police get arms then it will start an arms race with the crims - and the crims will win that race because there are no rules holding them back at all ..

Very true! The scarier part is what ISN'T known by the public or media.
The dangerous situations perpetrated by the blue gang whilst handling, training, re-training is diabolical.

You are right re the plod being useless with guns.
But in their defense, unless they are practicing very regularly with live ammo in realistic scenarios, when it comes time to actually use a firearm in a real situation where you get maybe a second or two to decide what is the right thing to do, never mind what the media or arm chair experts might say if you get it wrong, it isn't as easy as it looks on TV cop shows.

To be fair, it's easier for US-based cops because they don't give a fuck about "innocent" bystanders. The higher the ratio of rounds fired to deaths, the bigger next the budget for next year's ammo.

the average blow in nz who wants to hold a pistol license will fire more rounds in a weekend than the cops do in a year of 'training'

Fucking scary innit? Hey copper here's a gun, go and shoot 2 clips a month at a piece of paper with a target painted on it, now git out there and protect the people (and don't fuck it up...).

The one where hand gun deaths, per year, including US Police shooting suspects who aren't resisting, vastly outnumber the deaths from 9/11 EVERY YEAR.

what i want to know is when is "worksafe" or whatever they are calling themselves this week going to have a go at the police for putting their workers in dangerous situations. on a new house i am working on a worksafe inspector turned up as he was driving past and noticed a exterior plasterer standing on top of a 3 step ladder, he came in all guns blazing you would think the world was about to end. Compare that to a cop on his own having to deal with bad eggs there is no comparison, i have worked in the bldng game since 1975 and have never seen someone fall off a 3 step, the worst that could happen is he overbalances and hops off perhaps twisting a ankle a cop could and it has happened be killed

But the jew tax-payer like you would scream at the extra expense for proper training - and extra cops needed to cover those off at training.

Remend me of how much the budget for police has risen over the last four years...Govt is wanting a Rolls-Royce result from a Morris Minor budget....:(

Wouldnt bother mate be plenty here moan to there neighbour about the fact they cant get a cop to turn up after there house has been burgled whilst overlooking the fact that theres cops at the neighbours house every second day after hes given his wife n kids the bash...again,fwiw between midnight Thursday and midday Sunday of an average week coppers have to attend 1800 domestic bullshit calls...in some ways probably best to not arm the average copper in NZ eh as how many times could you go to the same house see the same kids beaten up before you just shot the cunt that beat them.

iT'D HAPPEN! Cause coppers are people too and most of em are bloody good people who genuinely believe they can make a difference.
Akz is 100% right too. On any given range day everyone with a licence to own and operate a pistol uses at least 2 or three boxes of ammo 1- 150 rounds, and they go on average once a fortnight. Many times the number of rounds a front line copper is given to use, if at all.
Bandy, big black dog, salivating, growling and making that noise, you'd likely miss too, no one knows until it's them on the spot exactly how they will react.

yes and no.

yes because police as they are a are a waste of money and haven't stopped any crime ever. the whole social institution is fucked up and redundant.

doubly so given the corruption, and the bottom-of-the-barrel screening requirement for was-bullied smallcock bastards to become policy enforcement officers.

but also no, because anyone tasked with keeping the peace (which should be everyone) should have the tools to do so effectively. plus, guns are cool.
