Theres a good cager

While I would be quick to burn a cager for poor attitudes on the road I think its important to point out the exceptions too.

Short story: was crusing along the old hutt rd last night (70km zone) and a woman in a station wagon (adjacent in slow lane to me) starts indicating and pulling across. I lean on the (feeble) horn and she completes the lane change anyway. Im fairly annoyed so I consider following her. She ends up going to the supermarket as I was indending anyway but I had 'tailed her closely' for some time so no doubt she knew I was pissed. So Im getting my helmet and shit together and she comes over and APOLOGISES!!! Shes a old american woman and is very sorry.

'I am so ashammed of myself as I know how dangerous it is for you guys. Im so sorry, I hope you have a good day'. She carried on for a bit more which was cool...restores my faith a bit after reading worse stories daily on this site (for good reason no doubt).

Thats good of her, but still, she shouldn't have done it and she was proberbly scared you were going to follow her home and have your way with her.

So the moral of the story was..although sorry,i will try and kill you anyway even though i heard you toot.. :2thumbsup.. at least you didn't get hit so there is some good news.

She apologised and said that it was 'too late'. The horn on my bike does sound fairly feeble. Maybe air horns are the go after all...

Get them airhorns. Had to use my newly-installed ones this morning. Nice 'n loud. Gave him the shits...well ok I don't know that for sure but I sure filled my undies and it's my horn! :shit:

I know this is being covered in another thread but:
do you have them mounted out there, in the open as it were? Im sure theres waterproofing issues (naked bike and all that). Difficult to toot suripticously to people with air horns too :)

I was in her blindspot. Its the laws of physics. I was driving a cage only 2-3 months ago and I dont think I needed/need extra education. I was more pissed cos she kinda just kept coming despite the horn tooting.

Well what did you expect sitting in her blind spot?

She probably though what the hell is that strange noise and where is it coming from, if she heard it over the radio.

This morning I was escorting CaN2 to work, her on the Yamaha and I in the cage. She was in the left Lane and I in the right. I indicated, checked my left wing mirror and didn't see her, I did a looooong head check and still didn't see her, I checked my mirror again and still could not see her. It was not until she saw my small side indicator and dropped back that she came into view. Despite my being aware of the bike and specifically looking I could not see the bike.

If you are going to ride in another vehicle's blind spot you better be bullet proof.

Your'e completely right. I was in la la land and told myself off for it. But like I said in previous posts I was pissed that she kept on coming.

I have attached to my handlebars a Airhorn-Can, its blardy loud when I hit the button.
I do have my ordinary horn, but most car drivers don't seem to hear it.

Don't rely on a car hearing you. Not saying don't use a loud horn,
it will obviously work sometimes, just don't rely on it.

If they don't see you cause you were in their blind spot or don't see the big truck that is obviously beside them they you will only confuse them more. It's a bit like PF's dementia test, you see what you expected to see.

Why not. they're not illegal or anything. Mine are out in the open (mounted on the engine crash bars). Just point the trumpet mouths downward a bit. They're air, no electrics, so it doesn't matter if they collect a bit of water. I left my original horns and button for "polite" tooting (though the Beemer, that's still frigging loud) and added a second "original + air" button. For "GET THE F**K OFF Y F'N W**KER" tooting.

Everybody makes mistakes. 'Twas an honest one, bikes can be hard to see. Personally I reckon if all cagers had such a good attitude I'd be real happy.

Skelstar. Mine are hidden under the fairings. The airhorns I got, the compressor is a pretty-much sealed unit and the horns are all plastic. So long as you point 'em so water doesn't go up them it shouldn't be a problem. It's just finding where to mount them that can be a pain.

did it take the words out of your mouth when she said sorry? I've had something vagely similar to that. I was getting ready to rip into someone, and they spoke first and said 'look mate, I'm real sorry....' and I just looked like a stund mullet..

I had pretty much given up on the idea. Im not really into confrontations with the public...im a lover not a fighter :). I really did appreciate the apology though...I think I felt better after that result than if I had nutted off at her. Im sure others would prefer to have the opportunity to yell a bit.

I mounted mine between the outside shell and to the right of the boot and dragged the hoses to outside for the horns.

Personally if I'm in their blindspot (and I mean REALLY in their blindspot, not just the cagers blindspot that exists anywhere beyond the end of their nose), I just accept that that's how it is and let them though...

But if they don't indicate... then I readjust their wing mirrors and/or angle a toe slider at them as I pass. Does wonders for the reputation of bikers in general, but then I'm a fairly selfish person so I'm more interested in making myself feel better.
