View Full Version : Rgv250 low rpm sluggish

glukasil

Hi guys. Just got a new toy...the engine was rebuilt and broken , airbox cleaned....if you accelerate fast it boggs but goes , once it reaches higher rpms it goes hard even before the powerband...
Previous owner said it was same before the rebuilt..... What is most probable problem?
Thanks a lot.....

These bikes need good plugs and good batteries. Otherwise have a good look at the carb jets, air solenoids and power valve setup.

compression test to eliminate issue with engine (you can get cheap ones for $40) , then do what above person just said carbs powervalves and plugs ,theres not to much to them really

glukasil

What is the easiest way to check the powervalves setup? Thanks.

I ll do the compression and the plugs tomorrow but have no idea how to check the powervalves....

"Low RPM" issues ... is the clue.

8-11,000 RPM is the zone you need for any real (fast) response. Below that ... don't expect too much ..

i meant it is very sluggish.....it could be delay for a sec or 2 before it revs up.

I ve tried new plugs , it helped but not entirely. Also i installed a petrol filter which was totally fine on kdx200 but this bike could not run with it... Is there a problem with petrol pump?
One more thing....the idle is 780-800 , should i get it higher?
Thanks ....

Mulsion choobs ovulating.

Engine is probably worn enough you might be looking at bennie and the jets.

Ask him if he has an actual motorbike.
Then ask him what the fuck he is doing on a motorbike site giving shit advice.

Also remind him this is a technical section not rant and rave.
Then suggest he goes back to what he does best (Humping goats)

When you say rebuilt.... I think you need to be specific as to what was done and by who.

Drew
26th July 2015, 14:30
This is what they do with a dropped powervalve. I always start with a compression test on these things.

FJRider

Engine was just rebuilt and broken in...7

During SOME rebuilds ... the budget dictates what is done. Not all that should be done (or at least checked) ... is actually is done.

Owner rebuilds often lead to issues ... not long after completion and back on the road ....

Broken ... is (it seems) the appropiate word.

Also ... after a rebuild of the bad bits ... the bits that were not as bad ... get more pressure on them when the bad bits get fixed.

This can lead to the "not as bad" bits ... being the issues at fault.

250cc motorcycles need all the help they can to perform as expected with NEW bike performance. Your's is not new. How much time/effort/money do you want to sink into it to make it perform "As New" ... ???

These bikes dont use a fuel pump, the fuel is gravity/vacuum fed. Inline fuel filters can cause the carb bowls to run dry but that doesnt sound like your problem. The factory fuel filters are on the peacock and little ones you put inside the fuel lines where it meets the carb.

Idle should be ~1300rpm

Also what rpm are you experiencing the flatspot?

glukasil
26th July 2015, 15:18
It is difficult to say what was done with engine,..the guy worked as engine mechanic and it was his own bike , not for a sale ....i have no reason not to trust him. He said the bike had same behavior before and probably carbs need adjusting.... the bike was unginished project.

I just wanted to check things that easy to do before digging dipper.... As i stated above , bike has huge acceleration when it hits powerband....it is just slow to rev up til some point 2000-2500 rpm.

Sorry mate , what is a peacock? i ll try to increase the idle up to 1300 , hope it will help...

Flat spot is up to 2000+ it never boggs completely , just slow increase in rpms....for example it is difficult to go steep hill from 0.....

The fuel tap.

Hopefully this dyno run on a vj21 helps to show that 2T 250s make bugger all power under 8000 rpm and almost none at low rpm:

If you set idle at 1300 ... 2000 is not much higher.

Ride it like you stole it ...

You do not ride a 250cc bike like a 750 cc bike ... nor expect they will perform the same.

This is speaking from experience on my vj22, the vj21 should be similar.
The power valves should cycle either when you turn on the ignition or start the engine.
There is a grey wire by the battery, touch that against the -ive terminal and the valves should open half way. There should be some markings on the pulley at the cylinder that show when the valves are closed, %50 and open, these arent perfect but are a good indication.
When i want to be %100 sure mine are setup well i take the chambers off and feel the valve position up the exhaust port.

Last time I rode an RGV 2fiddly pulling away needed a bit of clutch action. Bike was very well sorted. K'in hilarious actually. Had to feed the clutch out and keep the revs up. Or keep the revs up and wheelie. Bit of a knack. No comment on the OP's bike. A professional overview would give piece of mind.
