I know when I first got my Daytona II, even though the guy at XMPLtd told me not to, the first thing I wanted to do was ride it. This is not a fantastic idea.

We rolled it out to Southwards carpark on a shitty, rainy day, filled it with gas which promptly all fell out the bottom of the carb.

First thing to do, is dissassemble most of the body work and check things like welds, exhaust mounting, cable routing and adjustment. Take the wheels off, knock out the wheel bearings and replace them with #6000 items from Saeco ($35 a set). The reason for this is the original bearings are usually buggered from sitting so long in the box. You have to remove the brake disks to get the wheels off so while you're there, loc-tite the screws when you put them back on.

Remove the exhaust and check where it bolts onto the barrel. Mine was half blocked with slag from manufacturing and the weld went 7/8ths of the circumference of the pipe. Pull the sparkplug out and check the gap.

If you plan on racing at the outdoor kart tracks, replace the front sprocket from a 6 to a 7 tooth item ($30). At Kaitioki in Wellington on std 6T gearing, I had the throttle on the stop for 4 laps solid, a bit higher gearing will give the engine an easier time and boost the speed for the open tracks.

Tighten all major bolts, especially the handlebar clamps. Also check the welds on the handlebars.

When reassembling the bike, make sure you loc-tite almost everything. These things vibrate like a bastard and you don't want bits falling off.

Once you're bike's reassembled and ready to ride, check the chain tension's not too tight or loose and find an asphalt carpark or similar to ride on. As these bikes have no suspension, they get shaken to bits on tar seal chip such as roads.

And finally, try to run them in fairly gently, varying revs and loads on the engine.

Beyond all! Have a shitload of fun. :2thumbsup

how long do you need to run them for before they are run in properly? :scooter:

Depends on who you ask, I managed about half a tank of gas before I raced it. Doesn't seem to have hurt it any.

Direct copy of a Husquvana (sp) chainsaw motor. Reliable as, I'm amazed quite frankly. Every man and his dog has ridden/crashed mine and other than the pipe breaking, which was my own stupid fault, it's been good.

are you allowed to mod them for racing. I.e. make some suspension for the front etc??

To make the suspension strong enough, it'd have to be too big. Harden up.

Replaced the wheel bearings last night and yep, as advised, the original bearings were fucked. One of the rear ones is virtually siezed. Because of the wheel sizes, you cant get the wheel off without first removing the brake caliper, and you can't get the caliper out without first removing the brake disc.

There's two little spacers for each wheel, a wide one (about 10mm), a slightly narrower one and two 5mm ones. It's IMPORTANT to remember where each spacer came from if you want to have an easy job of putting the wheels back on.

Big difference once the bearings are replaced thogh, the wheels are silent running and really smooth. And when you've only got about 4hp, every little bit counts.

Right, just converted the first KBer to the Minimoto darkside. He didn't even have to ride it, just sat on it, asked a few questions then pissed off to place his order.

Who's next?

Lets say you pay $500 for one (creatnz hasn't got any right now), $35 for the bearings, $10 for the loc-tite, an afternoon drinking piss $20 and fucking around with it, $20 for good 2 stroke oil, and 2 litres of gas $3.14 and you're ready to roll.

$588.14 by my feeble mind.

And he'll post soon enough when he gets it I've no doubt.

Is there a Auckland branch for racing yet?

Yup. And it's huge. Production class (el cheapo ones like mine) is the niggest class they run.

Next meeting, Mount Wellington Kart track, October 29. It's the endurance race.

If you want to join the club, it's ten bucks. They also have indoor meetings at Silverdale? I think.

They'll go up alright, I've ridden up steeper than that on mine, but the transition at the botto coming down, well, they've got no suspension so your nuts would get a bit of a hiding, and that assuming you stayed on.

would be comedy plus if you asked me but you didnt so in any case...... for $568.14 you could either get a minimoto or a bucket racer?

Yup. Plus a trailer/ute/van to carry your bucket. And the added inconveniance of having to ride outdoors in the rain if it's shitty. We can just go mob an indoor karting venue if it's horrible.

texmo
24th September 2005, 15:14
I already have like 12 vans at my disposal a truck an a trailor, Added inconveniance of haveing to ride in the wet well its not alwase sunny and gets your skills up for riding in the rain.
you can also fit on a bucket racer, am yet to see anyone older than 8 fit on a mini moto without pulling something

White trash
24th September 2005, 15:16
Ahhh but I wont get sucked into your bucket vs MiniMoto argument young Texmo. They've both got their places, I just prefer the hilarity of the tiny suckers. It's real hard to take yourself seriously when you're riding one.

texmo
24th September 2005, 15:22
Now you understand why I like scooter, Small, quick enough, easy to throw around, a great laugh..... Still I wouldnt mind getting a minimoto to throw in the back of the van, so when I go down to racing I can have a blat on that as well.

There's rumours on GR's forums that his new minimoto carbon has 21 hp.

Anyone else think his last one was the sexiest minimoto they've ever seen. Had (iirc) 14 hp too.

All this talk of having to strip them when you first buy them, begs the question. Why don't they just sell them as kitsets? Why charge for the assembly if you're just going to have to strip them down anyway. Would make more sense both from their point of view and the consumers.

The thing is, these Chinese built cheapies, are sitting in their boxes for christ knows how long before the customer actually gets them. They're really toys that are copies of the real thing

You want a competitive machine, ready to race, buy a Blata or a Polini for seven grand and go sick. It'll have over twice the horsepower standard as the Asian built machines and be a hell of alot better built.

You could alwase buy a pollini barrel from scooter e motion and stick that on it, who knows how long the crank will last though and a bigger carb?

Hot up parts for the chinkers aren't an issue or expensive. A wicked 5 port barrel and new head are about $100 I think. Better crank? $50! Big carb, carbon reeds, pipes, they're all available and real inexpensive.

Edit: By the way, I'll swap you a go on my Minimoto for a hoon in your car.
