Off-road routes near Wellington?

I'm tempted to get a 250cc dual-sport bike to ride off-road around Wellington. What are some good routes? I've heard there are some tracks on farmland out near Red Rocks, and I've heard about Akatarawa. Are the forestry tracks near Catchpool open? Are there other good routes for a beginner within 2 hours of Wellington?

Yes to those. You pay $20 to ride round Brooklyn. The Maungatooks / Akatarewas are free but you need to register with the Regional Council for access.
