If you live anywhere near nelson (yes wellington you too) make the effort to go have a look. There are bikes in there that you will never get to see another example of in your lifetime.
The team there would love to show you around and point out the one of a kind bikes as well as let you take photos with the bikes.

Sad. Feel sorry for the chap who got the position they advertised just last year. Short lived dream job!
Would have thought they could have covered a good amount of the costs associated with displaying them like that doing a few different things on the boil in someone elses hands, but it is what it is.

Bugger was up that way last month and did not know it existed.
300 odd bikes collected in 7 years. Well done that man.
Reading the article I am of the mind they will be getting sold soon ........

The museum is closing g because Tom (the owner) has had a major cancer scare. he's decided to remove all the stress from his life and sadly that includes the public display of his bikes. Most of them were restored by the team at the museum and all are a credit to their work and dedication.
None of the bikes will be coming up for sale. As well as the 300 or so already done there are almost that many within for the magic touch.
Even if classics aren't your thing you will be impressed.

What I found odd about the story I read was that the owner was holding onto other business interests. You would think he would get rid of the lot if he wanted a stress free life and I would have thought the bike museum would be the least stressfulll of his business interests.
If those business interests made a good profit ... even after staff costs ... why not.
The bikes just became a hobby ... and no longer an unprofitable business. Again ... why not ... ???
Even better ... the bike collection stays together ... and in Nelson.

Often if you have a cancer scare people are more concerned with survival and having quality of life more than making profits. Thats why not!
Yeah, if they're financially thick. If they're not they will likely cut off the fat and maximise profit so their spouses and or family that take control of their assets when they pass don't have to do it themselves/inherit financial burdens.
I would try keep it open as something that at least covers the costs of the museum itself (the cost of owning the collection is a separate issue imo), you obviously would, and the man with the bucks clearly wouldn't.
There is probably some reason here I can't put my finger on as to why this man has much more money than both of us put together
Either way, take a gander before it's gone. I sure will.

Perhaps his concern is for the financial security of his family ... first and foremost.
Less for them to deal/struggle with if he does not "survive" ... in other words .. putting his house in order so to speak.
You may only be thinking of yourself first (and what you would do) ... but he wont be.

It is possible he's afraid his wife will sell them for what he told her he paid for them.

Are we going to suddenly see 300 odd bikes added to the "Optimistic Sellers" thread?

We were negotiating on a fairly rare one of mine a while back for probably the minimum it is worth anywhere in the world & it seems it wasn't cheap enough for them. They were keen until they realised I knew what it was worth.

Is Transport World that place where all the old trucks are?If so that is great as the display there is something else.
Hi guys I'm currently trying to recruit a team to do a "job".

Will require lots of driving and maybe possibly stealing a truck load of classic bikes.

I doubt it - if there's one thing the new owners have plenty of, it's trucks... (and transport companies... http://www.hwr.co.nz/transport/). While they don't appear to specialise in motorcycle transport, they do look like the kind of crowd who would try their hand at anything.

Do you know how to drive a 24 speed manual Honda Civic?

Will you accept 5 mins worth of footage of my 9 second quarter miles as adequate proof?

The story says that the bikes will be displayed elsewhere in the city and not at the museum. The Richardson Group own a lot of real estate in Invers so there are a few options for them, and I am sure they will throw some coin at it to make it work. I am wondering whether they will make an approach to E Hayes and have one joint museum?

I'd have thought Hayes bikes would be too valuable to their hardware business to put them anywhere else.

There's a hardware shop associated with E Hayes & Co? Geez, went and saw the bikes and cars etc, didn't stop to buy a nut, a bolt or a spanner. Bet a lot of people do that.
A work colleague who comes from down there took me through, showed me the two Munroe bikes, the Indian and a Velocette, Burt's five pound Velocette. Told me his grandfather was the one that sold Burt the Velocette, the Granddad was interviewed by Roger Donaldson about Burt before the movie was made, still has a few motorbikes in the shed and I think he still rides.

apparently there is very little money spent from people coming in to view the transport displays in there, it is done as a passion and lets face it its a good place to visit.
pretty sure hayes will stay the same or get added to as the seem to be adding stuff all the time and the sturgess collection will go in to a pay to view in a seperate location to the trucks, would be awesome to have the bikes and trucks in one place but i think the missus would be bored after the first six hours in a transport museum and i would hate to have to rush through.
i did go to the old truck museum and was there for a good cple o hours and still felt i had rushed and people who have been to the new one as well say it is even better

pretty much most that go to view the bikes.
hayes actually have a museum as well, its in oturehua and is where it all started including where the good old hayes chain strainers were invented. worth a visit for anyone heading south (or north as the case may be) for the Brass Monkey
