You have a decent riding jacket, pants, etc? If so you should be ok.

You could buy a rain suit. I have the Revit pacific one. Being in some nasty weather too and its done its job very well

And where do you put the rain suit when you are not on the bike?

you can buy one piece rain gear, goes on over your protective gear.

When I was at uni, they had lockers you could rent for the term. Big enough for all your gear.

I ride with a 15L back pack it lives in the bottom of that. cagers at work get more wet running to their cars than i do the whole trip home

You could be a cunt like half the riders I see and just leave your wet gear in one of the computer labs draped over a chair but I suggest not doing that.

Grab a locker. Depending on which uni you mean you can usually get them from your department or one of the centrally managed units (both usually via a student asscociation not direct from the uni/departmen) which ends up meaning your gear is more convenient to where you are working. Find some and they usually have signs up about who to speak to. Helmets tend to be a bit wide so sometimes people lock them to the outside stopping other people getting into their lockers.

Or you could scooter up your new bike and get a top box and chuck your wet shit in there so it is nice and ready for you when it comes time to head home.

Just wear it all day, that way everyone will know you ride a motorbike & it will make you look styley, cool & a bit gangster.

I just bought new Scott Ergonomic rain jacket and pants to wear over my normal gear when it's raining as I have a longish commute http://www.boydmotorcycles.co.nz/store/ProductDetails.aspx?n=Rain-Jacket-Scott-Ergonomic&p=111423&t=1&c=71173 Best wet weather gear I've ever had. It actually is waterproof.

I go to work instead of Uni....

But seriously if it is going to be wet, I ride commando, take a spare change of clothes, then when I get to work, I stick the wet gear in the hot water cupboard

Agree, you only have to spend a minimal amount for rain proof gear that works, or a fucking huge amount, the average priced gear ($3-400) is never really rain proof. I spent $700 (more fool me) on an all weather jacket some years ago, it's a summer jacket at best.

For actual gear I have had good luck with the Neo Mugello stuff that cycletread sells (and I think a few other places as well). The jacket and pants kept me nice and try through all that terrible weather we had a couple weeks back but my gloves really let me down and my lower arms got pretty wet as a result of that. It has kept me dry in a pretty torrential downpour but I haven't tried riding in it for a long time in the wet, just my half hour commutes.

He appears to not ride a harley fergusson...

+1 for the Revit rain gear. Lives in the bottom of the backpack and goes over the leathers.
You'll get there and back drier than those tin-topping or using a bus.

use an umbrella and fly to uni

Easy. Either invest in a bad ass bike umbrella, grab some pallet wrap and learn to hold your breath for ages or invest in your very own umbrella man (if budget allows you could alternatively get the hot umbrella girl flavour).

Rainbird (http://www.equipoutdoors.co.nz/contents/en-us/d556_rainbird_clothing.html) sell very lightweight, highly compressible jackets and trousers that go over your leathers (or whatever you use). I am now on my second set after getting some 20 years from the first set. I scrunch 'em up and carry them in the tail bag. All the time. They are not that expensive either. I used to get them from Para Rubber (if they still exist).

They are also windproof and work wonders on really cold mornings.

When I was campaigning (successfully, as it turned out), for patrol bikes in Christchurch in 2005, my boss asked the big question

"What happens when it rains"

I answered as a motorcyclist should, "One gets wet".

He was worried about the bikes getting parked up in bad weather. I did some checks with the Met Service, they told me that it rains 163 days a year in Auckland, but only 82 days a year in Christchurch.

Funny, when I moved from Auckland to Christchurch (2003) everyone down here was always banging on about how wet Auckland always was. Then they would sigh, look out the window, and say "We could do with some rain".

It's hard to keep everyone happy.

I'm curious as to what you are studying at uni, and which field you hope to go into after graduation?

I have Revit riding suit which has a Gore Tex liner and for when I am in jeans and leather jacket I have a set of Revit wet weathers which pack down very small and come in separate carry bags.

Don't forget to buy a neck roll to stop water running down your neck.

You know the old saying "with all the brains in the world he still couldn't pack his wet gear in a bag" :brick:

If I remember right from my college days the choice of buying waterproofs and buying beer meant that in the first class I would sit gently streaming while my clothes dried out.

Having an old unreliable bike helped though as my jacket and jeans ended up impregnated with oil which improved their water resistance enormously.
