View Full Version : Do you believe in bigfoot? What about Moa?
I had a nice long ride yesterday up through SH12. Beautiful ride and reminded me how beautiful this country is. Truely is godszone. Hill over Opononi is fantastic. Anyway coming down the hill towards Waipoua forest just looks like it goes on forever and got me thinking if i was a bigfoot or moa thats where i would be hiding out.

I'd say.... Lay off the bath salts :eek5:
Start a poll, at least 30% of all voters of such polls vote affirmative Huston....so long as they didn't carry knives and resembled a Muslim.
Just make it about Bigfoot though, could be fun..the Moa ran out of juice soon after the Poly's turned up.
I'd be hanging with that moose down south. He knows how to hide.
I believe in Jesus.
He had a moa round, didn't do very well... too much sand.

Apparently there's nothing wrong with having imaginary friends. It is an important developmental step.

:yes:Some of the locals who spend a lot of time in the forest could easily be mistaken for Sasquatch. And yes, Anika Moa is still alive, well, and supping from the furry cup.
Slightly, very slightly, off topic. I was talking to a fulla who used to hunt in the Waipoua forest t'other day and he was telling me about the remains of stone buildings in the forest. Quite a lot of them. Now that's interestin. So is the Kauri which is bigger than Tane Mahuta but kept hush hush.
Very primeval bit of landscape.

Interesting. Would be keen to go through and have a look myself. Would he be keen to guide a small group? And does he believe in bigfoot? I do the world is so huge just look at the forests if he doesnt want to be found you arnt going to find him. He is known as rakshasha in india/nepal which means demon. Some of them have magic powers too.

they're kindof the worst kept secret. Just that noone wants to acknowledge them, least of all the murrays. it would indicate a stone age population while they were running around with sharpened sticks. Also very similar foundation pattern to other old cultures from miles across the sea. Before boats!
So y'know. Aliens.
Also, wouldnt recomend going in without blessing. Good way to get your car torched.

The great Arthur's Pass Moa sighting of 1993. Visited the pub a year or so after and there was clear evidence of Moa, well there were a few Masports hanging on the wall so close enough.

Be careful if you go looking - it's harvest season and the growers may well mistake you for something (but probably not sasquash ...)
So y'know. Aliens.
Just like the sailing ship that predates the "current indigenous population" that is rapidly hushed up...

Much like the sighting of a Moa down south a little while back. It would normally be dismissed but this one had much more credibility due to the person doing the sighting.

I went tramping through whirinaki forest as a kid and remember tanya explaining to us the giant H kauri tree. Two trees basically joined together in the middle looking like an "H". Anyone seen it know where it is? Id like to go back see it again

It would make an epic house! The bigger tree had been rumored of for years but it was not until a hunter GPS'd it that DOC and Iwi could find it. According to the DOC guy who had just seen it (met him at the Waipoua Lodge) it's on the crown of a hill surrounded by it's enormous progeny. Must be a helluva thing to see.
Some of the stone remains can be accessed from one of the West coast settlements, name escapes me, had a liquid lunch. There is a creek at the end of the beach and the remains are not far up. Further into the forest from there is quite a large area of remains but difficult to get to. I doubt he would guide unless he had some hard cash. He has expensive habits.
Yeah, put a Ngapuhi sticker on your car.
There are accessible remains of stone work in the Puketi forest. The most interesting from an archaeological point were bull dozed by DOC a few years ago. An amateur archaeologist originally found them (my old neighbour) and she got shit for her theory's so backed off. Gone now, apart from her photographs and the horde of not Maori things she has in her house. Hmmmmmm? Nobody wants to find out about the red headed stone workers.

Supposedly Norse-style weren't they? Think most of them have been quietly destroyed. Be nice to know who they were, but I doubt it's ever going to happen.

Their is a lot of tantalising but inconclusive "evidence" out there. The Waitaha descendants talk of stone workers, similarity's of Celtic and Polynesian language, art, and design can be seen all around the Pacific rim.
I'm a bit sceptical, but the dirty, great cliff/bluff you pass on the way to Mangonui, supposedly has Celtic designs carved into it. By metal tools. I've heard this of other prominent cliffs in the area. I've also read of Moa bones excavated from middens which appear to bare cuts made by metal.
It's all unproven and a bit undercover but I see no reason why brave and imaginative people who faced a choice between dying where they stood or dying over a distant horizon would not take the chance of the ocean. Scientists kind of stop 2000 years ago, thinking Pacific society's slowly island hopped. I would like to think that brave souls have used their brains and hopes to cross the seas and oceans for 10'000 years.
How Celts or Norsemen got here is a huge leap but the same questions are being asked of archaeological finds in north and south America.
The skills of Polynesian sea farers are undisputed, a friend of mine was crew on Te Aurere which sailed from Mangonui to Hawaii using traditional navigation. They had a modern compass on board but never used it.
If northern sea farers had similar skills, then it's possible they met, married, and continued the voyages.
The Waitaha make a big point of avoiding in breeding and sending their fittest and finest out into the ocean to strengthen their progeny.
Just sayin, it's a nice idea.

Easy to become unduly influenced by the sheer romance of it all.
Interesting, however, and you may know that the Scottish had a habit of sending their 2nd sons into armed service with neighbouring clans. Minimised fratricide, and cunningly reduced the liklihood that your neighbour might get too interested in your turf.
The only culture known to do that, I believe.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
Just sayin.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are still moose in fiordland, it's a bloody big place to hide.
Moa in arthurs pass, maybe not so much, although they would probably be a bit twitchy about human interaction and hide after what happened to their ancestors.
Just because maori were the ones here when the 'modern' white man turned up doesn't mean nobody was here before, for all we know they existed and ended up on the bbq within a few days of being discovered (after all, there is actually a place called cannibal gorge for a good reason), easter island anyone?

Their are quite strong feelings against researching pre Maori cultures. Moriori, Waitaha and whoever else washed up here. It has been implied that some very inconvenient truths are being dodged.
If English settlers behaved same way Maori did when they got here they would have been wiped out. They should be grateful they are still here.

The fix is jobs for the joe average, not likely to happen as long as or pollies view themselves as global citizens and not fellow countrymen.
Are we really getting, for example, cheap shoes now? Once you take into account the extra we pay out for, police, courts, dole, mental health,
housing, and the list goes on, I believe they cost a lot more than face value.
Not all people are born with the ability to hold down a skilled job, and this will never go away.
I think the real question is, what kind of country do we want to live in?Where does humanity now fit into the economic equation?
Oh yeah, we did them a huge favour! Much like the Poms did for the Australian Aboriginals I guess?
