View Full Version : Wellington: Wellington Xmas Bash?

Hi Folks...

Feckin hell.... OCTOBER already already...

So we still have time to have a think about a wellies KB xmas bash...

Some clever clogs might turn this into a poll or something but I'd like to get peoples opinion on what you would like to do this year?

We are happy to host it again at Raumati BUT perhaps you folks rather do something else or go someplace closer to town? Maybe lunch time ride to a domain and set up a BBQ (QE2 Plark) or summat. Go to a cafe for a fixed menu, pub, I dunno.... Massed xmas ride down Courtenay Place? Maybe even have a joint wellie / auckland one in the middle of the island...

Your thoughts please.....

Paul N

ps - anyone else wants to step up and do this, feel free..... I'll even help...

An enmasse ride somewhere promenant (sp) would be excellent. Capture the imagination of the public and raise the awareness and have some fun at the same time. Courtney place would be cool...

im there, so long as i can hook up with someone who knows the area well. beemer, your closest to me that i know of, lol. likely be also interested in the joint one if we get that far. just let me know the day, time and place! [also costs involved]

Now let's be sensible about this...

What we need is a venue that will accommodate 30-plus KBers and hangers on, that works in both wet and dry weather. We need something that involves a bit of a ride. And we need something on a Saturday so that Mrs H and others who work Sunday nights can come along.

Hitcher's suggestion number 1: The Avoca Hotel at Upokongaro (just up the river road from Wanganui). Great spot, garden bar, good food, good beers (and a corgi well known already to some of our number). Central enough to pull some punters from central regions and Taranaki.

Well for a change lets ride as fast as we can over the takas, then ride back and pull lots of wheelies down SH2 into Wellington where we can park in disabled parking bays.

The wanganui things sounds OK but it's a sad ride up that way. I say lets head over to Lake Ferry for a few and beers, that way we can stay there overnight if required.

3rd October 2005, 19:46
following hitchers idea...riders local to upuk could meet there for a kinda meet n greet and sorting of ride rules etc [good to newbies to group rides like myself] and then head to welly perhaps?

Depends which way you go to Wanganui, but point taken. Lake Ferry is a good idea.

A good days trip, ferry down to picton, do the Queen Charlotte Drive ride into Nelson for lunch. Across to Blenheim for a coffee pitstop.
Back onto a 6-7pm sailing.

May cost abit more, but bound to be an awesome days outing! One the partners will love too. Money well spent I'd say. Does anybody know if the bikes cost the same as a passenger still?

Try this for my timetable: 7am sailing, arrives picton 10am. Ride into Nelson at Midday. Depart Nelson at 1.30 arriving blenheim at 3.30, Leave Blenheim 4.30 arriving picton by 5.30 for a 6-7 sailing depending on whether we play miniput!

Whoa...

Lets not get too much detail 'just' yet.... Just bike brush strokes...

So I take it that thus far, a ride is more popular than a party? Lets get that sorted and go from there....

So......

um....

jumping to the detail.... wot about the 'beyond the bridge cafe' We could do a deal and book the place out...

Oooops, Let me re-phrase!

Ride South!

Just curious though, has anybody here done a similar day trip? Does it work well?

Dafe - the only thing is that going on the ferry is real expensive for us student types if its just for a day. Could still be convinced though cause it would be an awesome day out. Lake Ferry sounds like the best easy option. Would be cool to do something a little bit diff though I guess. That's my uncommital 2c worth anyway.

Good idea Paul.

Having said that, we're away every w/end in December so won't be able to participate.

FWIW, if we were going to be going, I'd not be keen on the SI idea - would prefer to stay in the NI. I like the Upkongaro idea to meet some other KBers from out of Wgtn.

Yeah, that was my only concern. It does come down to whether the younger ones can dig up the cash, It's not exactly the best time of year for it either. But I've thrown the idea into the air to see what transpires.
I have also thrown the SI idea onto the e-Riders website to see what comes of it. If it happens there I'll post a link here.

4th October 2005, 08:01
I like the SI idea but....

Frankly, if I'm going to go to all that fag of getting on the ferry... (3 hours each way in one day is a bit much for this old geezer) Then I reckon a couple of nights and a bit of a tour is the go... Much like we did last year and are still thinking of doing in the autumn...

December is a bugger of a time, everyone has a christmas party or a do to attend nearly every weekend and it's hard to fit it all in.. However, KB has become quite a decent little community and as such, I reckon it would be nice if we marked this time of the year with a bit of a do!

Going for a ride is OK but.... Well going to the Wairarapa again.... Hmm.. Dunno..

Lets give it the rest of the day and see if anyone else is keen on doing something and then, if there are no takers... The thread will quietly disappear and nothing more shall be said..

A welcome back post xmas party?

KB Beach day?

Sunny day, bbq style gathering works for me. If there's alcomahol, then less riding is more betterer.

For those of you who missed out last time, Paul in NZ held a kb bbq at his place in Raumati, and it went very well. Cheers Paul!

Cheap suits me.

Say a BBQ a shortish distance away (Palmy/Masterston/Alfredton) way? That way the Napier and Wanganui people don't have too far to go either.

Don't *really* care...

I'm keen to travel to something Wellington way. No ones discussed what the likely date would be. Sunday 18th has the KB trackday and also the Second round of the nationals on at Manfeild.

Lots of good rides around Manawatu Rangatiki. But I suppose 2 hours ride up here and then a 2-3 hour ride followed by another 2 back to Wellington may be a bit to much for latte sipping internet surfing weekend bikers. And roughing it out overnight would be just silly.

I could guarantee at least 3 from the naki if it was Wanganui - Manfield - Turangi general area.

You could always go to somewhere like Rivervalley, just north of Taihape.

http://www.rivervalley.co.nz/bookings/default.asp?cid=6

The link shows their prices, $20 for a dorm bed. (Students Prices!!!)
We could do an overnighter, meaning a good long ride followed by alchohol , sleep, more socialising and a good long ride again the next day. Maybe arrange a orienteering rally up there, groups arranged by bike make!
This could draw alot of KBers from all over as this is very central.

Good try Dafe.. No ones biting but I thinks it's a swell idea...

Folks. Due to an overwhelming lack of interest I'm parking this for now. Not to say some keen person can't do summat though!

Cheers

The ride to Nelson thing may bring in a few of us from the Mainland. Just a thought.

Well I like the sound of a ride down south, I'm keen. I know it costs a bit, but it would be worth it to see a bit of different scenery whizzing past lol. I just checked the net for bookings etc its about $69 each way, and about $108 each way for two up. but if we had enough people we could do a group booking and maybe get a discount???? Anyway just thought it sounded like a good ride

Sorry Paul what started out as a great idea and offer on your part got Hijacked by the likes of myself with plans of some great NI/SI summer tour.

The original idea of a simple (KISS) get together was the best and someone offering a venue etc doesn't happen often.

Just a thought here--what would happen if the track day was combined with a christmas get together at taupo.
Its mid way for most KBers and plents of places to stay

Thats actually a pretty good idea...

It does not actually spin my crank but I can definately see the appeal to others and is worth a bit of discussion.

My problem, is I'm old and associate xmas with family and friends and many of those are non riders / motorcyclists so I tend to favour events that are child friendly. However, most KB'rs probably don't have kids / non riding partners so your idea is excellent.

Like I said, this is a busy time of the year and finding a spare saturday is almost impossible for most of us. I just thought I'd bring it up earlier than last year to see who was keen. With the limited responses we have had I'd think just a quiet ride could suffice.

Cheers, and thanks to all that responded.

Dafe.. Do you know if the road is sealed all the way to the Lodge? (oh bugger it, I'll email em anyway) The prices look pretty reasonable and I'm sure this could be a great place for an overnighter.... Failing that, it might even be the sort of place the vickster and I might like to visit...

EDIT - Last 5kms are gravel....

im keen to jump on virtually anything, but not that keen on the idea of crossing to the SI...mainly due to cost and also roping the bike so she doesnt tip over. i like the idea posted above, but not sure about the gravel. however, i do know a local gravel road so maybe need to go and practise on it, lmfao.

let me know what dates and meeting place....as i said, nearly anything will suit me, i can usually work it into plans, specially something as important as this!

Perhaps everyone meet at the track in the morning, then those who get tired of watching others have fun go off on a ride near Taupo. Hopefully led by a local who knows a few good roads. Meet back somewhere with alcamahol after the trackday and have a right old shindig late into the night.

Can't go wrong there :-) .

Trackday is on the 18th of December. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=18041

Trackday option is good but experience tells me that there is no way I will have time for this that close to xmas..

Downside is that it is hardly a special event and it would get lost in it. Personally, watching a whole trackday at taupo and not participating would be as exciting as watching the cat get an erection... but then I've got the attention span of a goldfish...

A social get together - ie a party is suitable for kids etc 'cos you can leave anytime you want etc and is relatively 'contained' not to mention affordable for everyone. hey, the diehards can always make it an overnight experience still...

A rally, or even an overnighter, once it gets up in numbers past you and the dog is a whole different kettle of fish. Hauling enough stuff for families, dinner, breakfast, sanitation etc etc is not all that practical plus venue becomes a BIG problem. Plus the organiser starts becoming liable for a whole bunch of problems that I for one don't want to entertain at that time of the year! Contrary to popular belief, the days of 30 or 50 bikers being able to rock up to a beach and light a fire and sleep the night away are well and truely over.

If you want to organise a rally... I reckon that would be great (except I'm banned from the music quiz - don't ask) and I'll attend if I can get away...

Oh buggerit.... I really should never have asked peoples opinion should I? I mean who would have thought that they would have had them... ;-)
