Low risk, high reward, and if you do get caught, a bit of a telling off, a slap with a wet bus ticket, some nice Home D, and all is forgiven.

Yup.

It beats me how people get away with tax fraud for so long. If I'm so much as a day late with GST or PAYE, IRD are on me like a rabid dog.

Interesting. She must have had a very good lawyer. Should have been a cut and dry (weird term really) case with a bit of time surely? Maybe the $50k touched the judges heart.

normally cases are "open and shut"...

cut and dried refers to hay (or other sheeeeeeeet :doobey: )

perhaps you meant clear cut?

and no, the 50k didn't warm his heart, it fuelled his motorlaunch and restocked the bar after last weekend

Interesting. She must have had a very good lawyer.

Or was a member of the same social circle as the judge.

Years ago a woman here was caught shoplifting. The lawyer who appeared for her was the head of a major law firm in town, he just did not defend minor criminal charges. His presence in court was a message to the judge. A message along the lines of "This lady is a dear personal friend of mine".

It worked, she didn't even get the wet bus ticket slap.
