View Full Version : Motorcycles not being permitted in the convoys on the Kaikoura inland route

Heard this on the radio this morning, maybe I misheard it but wondering what the reasoning behind this would be when light (cars etc) and heavy vehicles are being escorted through on alternate days. Can't get much lighter than a bike (or a bicycle, which aren't allowed either - this I could understand as they might struggle to keep up in places).
Surely if a run of the mill car can get through it would be a doddle on a bike?

I'd be more worried by falling Gerrys...

You would not want to race on the roads around Kaikoura ..

Sounds like racism to me.
Actually if we get a suitable ethnic minority on a motorbike to get refused and kick up a stink then after they get let through well be able to say its racist to not let *************************** through ;)

too many exhausts with aftermarket cans will set of landslides with the noise. You blokes and your post 98db pipes are ruining all the good places to ride....Arrow, Acrapovic, Two Bro's, are the debil

Just go without the convoy, if the trucks & cages are getting through then a dual sport should have no problem.

It is most likely the roads are that shit arse and they are having to ford streams where bridges are damaged that the last thing they want to have to do is stop the convoy so a rider can pick up his bike ....
Yeah yeah you can ride vertically on your BMWankEuanGregor adventure bike, but guarantee a bunch of sport bike or cruisers would turn up for a nosy.
As for aftermarket pips and their noise - I think they should alow one controlled convoy of Harleys through - it would clear all the loose shit up the top of the slopes.

I don't really think it has fuck all to do with letting bikes on the road, it's probably more to do with it being a calamitous event and why the fuck would they want bikes joy-riding when so much shit is happening. Fuck me, they weren't letting locals and people who needed to be in there use the road, why would you think they would let you through?..

Guess if you're stuck in Kaikoura on a bike you'd better find a friendly van or truck driver then (no trailers either - heard a builder who brought some material down from Nelson on a trailer express his frustration at not being allowed through, having been told the opposite before he left.)
Not sure your average tin top roof would be much more protection from falling deborahs than a helmet, at least the shape of the helmet would make it more likely to be a glancing blow.
Must be the stability thing, what with motorcycles falling over all the time and such.

"Safety-Nazis" term springs to mind. That and people who refuse to accept that their own actions may have consequences, hence the need to blame someone else.

So the emergency services dont have enough to do so they can come fix up some joy riding riders that thought it would be a giggle.

I can see that being a fun auto correct to the wife: honey I'll be late home tonight, not sure how late. I was riding along and I got covered in Deborahs. Not sure how long before I get pulled out.

There would likely be a 30km speed limit on a lot of the road and they perhaps felt that with adventure and trail bikes being able to travel faster than that on the rough road it would make things dangerous. There would also be the issue of maybe group riders turning up racing one another to try and beat the convoy. You would need to keep a good gap between the next vehicle so that if you saw a boulder coming down you could stop to avoid it or speedup to get clear. I will make an enquiry myself in a few weeks about going through on my bike as the bike ban may only be while there are still a lot of residential, supply, rebuild and emergency traffic wanting to get through. I note on the application form though to get through at the moment they are saying nothing about motorcycles not being allowed only bicycles but they also ask what your reason is for going and they have not included "just to visit" which in a week when the bulk of emergency, supply and residential traffic has gone through they need to do in order to keep the businesses going.
Took an early 7am squirt up to Cheviot today, had a coffee and back home on the 'Busa about 9.15 when I left Cheviot . Magic ride no traffic to speak of and perfect road and weather ( zoom ). Noticed a heavy truck convoy coming North including STMS vehicles and a few container trucks ( empty ) with Hi-lifts obviously readying for the re-opening of the road to Kaikoura today ..

Latest update is unrestricted access on the inland road, and shortly unrestricted daylight access on SH1 south of Kaikoura.
No mention of bikes not allowed.....
