Motorcycles not being permitted in the convoys on the Kaikoura inland route

Heard this on the radio this morning, maybe I misheard it but wondering what the reasoning behind this would be when light (cars etc) and heavy vehicles are being escorted through on alternate days. Can't get much lighter than a bike (or a bicycle, which aren't allowed either - this I could understand as they might struggle to keep up in places).

Surely if a run of the mill car can get through it would be a doddle on a bike?

Just go without the convoy, if the trucks & cages are getting through then a dual sport should have no problem.

It is most likely the roads are that shit arse and they are having to ford streams where bridges are damaged that the last thing they want to have to do is stop the convoy so a rider can pick up his bike ....

Yeah yeah you can ride vertically on your BMWankEuanGregor adventure bike, but guarantee a bunch of sport bike or cruisers would turn up for a nosy.

As for aftermarket pips and their noise - I think they should alow one controlled convoy of Harleys through - it would clear all the loose shit up the top of the slopes.

I don't really think it has fuck all to do with letting bikes on the road, it's probably more to do with it being a calamitous event and why the fuck would they want bikes joy-riding when so much shit is happening. Fuck me, they weren't letting locals and people who needed to be in there use the road, why would you think they would let you through?..

Guess if you're stuck in Kaikoura on a bike you'd better find a friendly van or truck driver then (no trailers either - heard a builder who brought some material down from Nelson on a trailer express his frustration at not being allowed through, having been told the opposite before he left.)

Not sure your average tin top roof would be much more protection from falling deborahs than a helmet, at least the shape of the helmet would make it more likely to be a glancing blow.

Must be the stability thing, what with motorcycles falling over all the time and such.

I can see that being a fun auto correct to the wife: honey I'll be late home tonight, not sure how late. I was riding along and I got covered in Deborahs. Not sure how long before I get pulled out.
