Considerable achievement taking a refined Beetle up to that speed.

I thought a Porsche was just a refined beetle. A golf is Beetle with the engine at the wrong end.

your getting your Beetles mixed up.
New Beetle is just a Beetle looking body dropped on a Golf platform.
I'd put lots of links and quotes but i'm not Husaberg :killingme

True, not sure how they can call it a beetle when the engine's at the wrong end. A bit like the mitsi colt that's changed from a mini mustang into just another tedious 4 door hatchback.
Anyway, 164 is not that surprising for any modern car, keeping it on the road while 4 times the new limit is not a bad effort considering the number who can't manage it even when they're sober.

I guess if you've never driven a MK5 onwards GTi you could be forgiven for your ignorance.

164 would be, what, top of third gear?
edit where does it say what sort of car he was driving?

Or even R32 or R. But just assuming by the majority of Golfs out on the road and general reputation of Golfs.
Gosh, I'm sounding like Cassina. Apologies.

 doh, thanks chaps.
When in Melbs recently I drove in and was passengered in my sister in laws VW Golf. Hers is a five door wagon. What a great car. Zero rattles or shakes, whisper quiet, decent stereo, and frugal on gas. I liked it so much I am seriously considering getting one. Or the equivalent platform to my Subaru XV which is the mini SUV with 2l and auto and 4WD.
My Subaru is OK and the only Japper I would buy but the Golf was just a better vehicle.

Jesus wept. We had a bunch of VW Golfs and Polo's in my last company role - the cars were all bought brand new from a VW dealer in Sydney. All of them needed a bunch of work, ranging from DSG replacements, to minor stuff that was still a pain in the ass. The diesels are fantastic. Aside from spewing out 40 times the legal amount of cancer causing toxins. Great on gas though, the Golf I had for a while would do 6L/100 even in traffic. When it was running that is. I ended up using a manual Polo for months on end while my lemon was in getting all sorts of shit done to it. I got a Jetta 118 TSi, and it sat with the dealer unregistered because I had to come back to NZ - they ended up buying it back to hand to someone who liked the special order I made.
You just heard a sigh of relief to not have to drive it. I've just bought an Alfa Giulietta - I get it next week sometime after they do the delivery bullshit. It can't be any worse than a VW, right?

Some Golfs would be a ton of fun. My brother had one and so did a retirement age car enthusiast I know. Each of their cars was different but both had largish engines and went like the proverbial haunted shithouse.

Sounds a bit like it depends on the Golf then.
My folks had one (an '08, auto) and it was alright but nothing spectacular to drive. They sold it after the third time that the electronics packed a sad - $800-ish each time to sort out.

The wife's 2005 V5 can hustle. I certainly corner much harder in that than on the bike just because you can get away with so much more. Acceleration is pretty good, for a car.
If anyone offered us $5K they could have it as it is surplus to requirements and heading for retirement. 164 is more than manageable. Apparently.
