In the 70's you had to turn the radio up to drown out the diff noise. It was the car that smoked...badly. Those old Vauxhalls were great!
Vauxhall Viva
no heating or air con
lights could be on full all day, no one would notice.
performance none could beat.
Don’t remember a radio.
went past an old Vauxhall factory while in UK, no wonder they were a performance machine...:killingme

Well found a rule with a quickish search
Legality of infotainment systems it seems would largely depend on what they define as a "TV" (I can't find a legal or made-up NZTA definition of "TV")
I guess since an infotainment system is more than just a TV, it could be argued that it's a driver aid.

I bought a new Viva wagon in 1970. It had been 'done up' as a demonstrator, so had a heater, carpets & wheel trims. I had to buy a radio for it as I would be doing weekly return trips from Invercargill to Queenstown, solo. Even had to get a Radio Dealer's Licence So they would sell it to me!

Can be fitted on the left front seat ...
Or on a motorcycle pillion seat. (not recommended) ... ;)
You can get them on a short term (time ??) rental ... or long term ownership. It is advised you "Try before you buy" ... as a few people have found to their cost.

A few years ago, before I retired, my morning commute was west bound on the north-western motorway. One morning crossing the causeway came up behind a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner in lane 1. As I rode past all was revealed... she was giving him his morning wake-up blow-job...
A couple of toots on the horn and a wave... I trust she didn't do anything too drastic with her teeth on his appendage.

I've seen similar from the cab of trucks ... not actually unusual anymore ...

Take a test drive in any late model Euro used car, you may find the prostate probe has more miles on it than the car itself. Also explains why the fog lights are permanently on no doubt :innocent::shutup::facepalm:

Have just imported a couple of Nissan Leafs for clients and been driving around and testing them.
Well that type of vehicle is certainly going to change the way people drive. If I drive like a pussy, I can get >100km out of a single charge. If I drive like I want to set somewhere fast and also enjoy the journey, 35Km is ambitious, out of a full charge.
There is going to be so many konked out fukwits awaiting assistance, for their dead vehicles, it won't be funny
As it happened, I picked them both up, from compliance, with no charge. It was easy enough to get a charge from a free charging station, whilst enjoying a coffee and an email catchup.
My point is that, in the future, when such vehicles become more common, the roads will be full of sedate 'stressed out' drivers, praying to make it home, without having to stop for a recharge, or konk out completely.

Don't worry, the safety Nazis are installing Armco down the sides of the expressways with no room to safely pull off so they will be snooker balled
to the scrap yard by the next distracted driver.

My Parents bought a few new cars, mainly with commercial vehicle purchases thus bypassing the need for " overseas funds"
Morris Oxford, Morris 1800 , which according to the sticker on the rear window floated on a cushion of air, a Holden Premier 253 V8....none of which had a radio. Saying that with a V8 you don't need a radio.
Sadly I spent most of my time driving the A60 ute with column change, but got to drive the V8 when I was older at 16.
I was telling someone about retread tyres the other day and they did not believe me.
The Govt of the day and their cronies had the market nicely stitched up, did not really twig to it until I went to Au in 85....Kombi vans for a grand and Ducatis for 3K, plus wages 30% higher.

I have no fond memories of 70's English cars.
That's what happens when you put tariffs on things, you end up with shit like Cortina's, Vivas, anything by British Leyland and Triumph motorcycles.
Americans had Mustangs.....we had Consuls and then Capri's.

I do! My first car was a Wolesley 6/110. It was indeed a piece of crap but it had one virtue - reclining front seats :msn-wink: . Well, it was made in the 60's but I had it in 1971

:Offtopic:
We have one of them (figured we might as well get a "free ride" while the Govt is offering it) if you accept they're a town car there's no real prob with them & kinda fun with the 'all torque all the time' that electrical brings.
I've never had any range anxiety but I will say we would not get one if we weren't running a multi-vehicle fleet. It's the misses daily runner & weekend hop-about; but for the family trips away we still resort to good old petroleum power, as do I for my getting to work.
Electrics biggest drawback is as you say the range, coupled by fuel times; sure you can get 80% in 20mins but that's 20mins which will only give you say 80km's vs 3-5mins which will give you a good 600km's on the petroleum side.
The other problem as you point out is range isn't standard. Unlike petroleum range varies wildly depending on how you drive, what you use, weather conditions, traffic conditions, speed of roads etc etc you can't just say "a charge will get you this far" it's more "a charge might get you this far if/unless..."

Hillman Hunters were not delivered from Todds with a radio but it was a "mandatory option" installed at the dealership during pre delivery check.

Going back to the road toll; I see we're on our way to besting last years total [379] at 199 killed in half a year currently
Slow the roads - increase the deaths... Just wait till they re-introduce 80km/h roads everywhere

I enjoyed "Car SOS" this last Sunday on the telly, where they visited a shop with the "aftermarket" radios with aerial sockets. It reminded me of our Austin 1100 land crab which had a Fergusson radio exactly like on the TV show!

A pile of Selwyn District roads have been reduced to 80 in the past couple months.

My 1970 Hillman Hunter was my first car and it never had a radio and I never fitted one right up until I sold it in 1988 so it can't have been mandatory in 1970. I always said who needed a radio when you could listen to the sweet sound of the engine. That sound never faded in the country either like the radio stations did.
For its day I thought it was a great car and took it down all sorts of terrain where people seem to think only 4x4s can go now. The boot was big enough to put my Honda XL175 in when I took the wheels and forks off of it and transported it regularly that way between North and South Islands.

I had a Hillman Hunter ... and it got stolen.
A few days later the guy brought it back and apologized. He said ... "with having to own/drive one of those ... I had enough problems" ...
I did clock up quite a few miles in it though. I didn't have any real issues with it until one of the pistons turned into a two piece unit.

I was at Marsden Alexander motors in Lower Hutt in the late 70s and it sure was mandatory then. Also for Avengers, Galants and NZ assembled Valiants.
Lots of Hunters (aka Paykan) still on the road in Iran. The first Paykan, which means "arrow" in Farsi, was first manufactured in Iran in 1967, a year after the Hillman Hunter appeared in Britain. It became an exclusively Iranian model after Chrysler UK discontinued it and sold sole manufacturing rights to Iran in 1979. Production ended in 2005.
Two million of the five million cars on Iran's roads are Paykans and sales were still 150,000 a year.

If there are fewer deaths the police claim their campaigns are working, when there are more it is just a statistical glitch.
