So. . Was anyone else thinking - Fire hose?

How can a prick like this hold the city to ransom?

The response seems lame but I don't think he justified a bullet. Firehose sounds good.

My first thought was - finally, a good use for a drone-... with Stuka sirens.

What's the bloody point of the SAS or whatever we have in NZ?

Would this not be a fine opportunity for one of their snipers to take a leg out?

You'd give him fair verbal warning first.

And maybe a couple of close shots to let him know you are serious - shoot the knife out of his hand type of thing.

Mark Wahlberg would have fixed it fast.

Hollywood snipers are much higher skilled than our police. Or for that matter, any police.

A Tazer would not seem suitable, it would require a cop to go risky close to somebody armed with a knife, all while balancing on a pipe. Which is probably why they didn't use one.

The pipes are probably one reason they didn't use a dog.

The SAS are not permitted to involve themselves in civilian matters, the police would have to request their assistance and that would probably require political approval. The police would rather use their own resources, even though they are less skilled.

Last time I saw the SAS deployed here was a prison riot at Mt Eden. The TV news showed snipers on a motorway overlooking the prison but that was many years ago before the Police had a Special Tactics Group.

AllanB

It's a PC world now. I need to adapt better.....

Like those shits in there cars in Christchurch last week raising merry hell. Why the Police did not call the army at Burnham up for some tactical assistance is beyond me. Pretty sure they have a decent supply of burly lads in uniform, half tracks and all types of large heavy vehicles to form barricades or just drive over the front of offending vehicles ;)

They probably need a pass from the Green Party before they drive over a public lawn though in case some special snail lives there.

Nah it's a slippery slope. Next step is Army to clear the Cold Kiwi site of non NZ First voters.

Fire hose and Bouncy castle is my favorite combination so far. ;)

City held to ransom? It did show that there's probably too much reliance on a single roadway. What if something serious happened in the tunnel and it was closed for some weeks? You need Plan B.

Wellington is set up to be isolated in a decent highway closing disaster.

Mind you look what happened to the South Island when we had the Kaikoura earthquake.

There are a couple other ways on to the motorway. But the whole city is piss poorly designed.

Wellington is set up to be isolated in a decent highway closing disaster.

Mind you look what happened to the South Island when we had the Kaikoura earthquake.

Most recently the Far North was isolated when a culvert blew the road out at Pukenui, peeps had to go through the forest or use the beach to get around.

A few years ago we had a bit of a wet. SH1 fell off, Twin Bridges road was blocked by land slides and the Waipoua forest road was impassable to heavy vehicles. We nearly ran out of bread. Terrible situation, I couldn't get to work...

So, no Plan B.

But it does seem that Wellington Council has lots of Plan Cycleway...

What if the viaduct to the SH1 and 2 junction had a major issue?

I wonder if in the washup after this event anyone will ask if there needs to be alternative routes planned and prepared for, so they can be implemented quickly?

Was thinking about what could have been done to get this idiot down. NZ Police presumably had no suitable non-lethal gear or they would have used it.

A search shows up all sorts of kit, some borderline science fiction, others of such size they would need to be mounted on a truck.

Bean bag shotgun cartridges are the most economical option although there are problems with range and accuracy. In the Wellington situation though the guy gave them enough time to practice until they either got good or they ran out of ammunition.

Then there are pepper balls, frangible balls that explode on impact releasing irritant chemicals. At the more modest end of the market these are fired from a paintball gun but there are more expensive and more sophisticated options.

Both of these non-lethal, or more correctly less-lethal, options can seriously injure or kill someone but in some circumstances may be a better solution than a bullet.

Remember he did climb up there himself in an atempt to get away from the police that part of his plan failed after a few seconds.
He really had nothing to gain in the situation.

Nah monsoon bucket from a helicopter. far more environmentally friendly. That way you can wash the buses at the same time.

Here is the full video detailing his crime spree
the actions seem excessive but compared to shooting him he got off light.
if you watch the video he dose indeed fire a shot, and also turn and bring the rifle towards the officers briefly.
At that moment he proves the rifle is loaded and he knows how to fire it.
Also he is also prepared to use it in full view of the attending Police.

From that moment onwards he is very likely and justifiably risk of being shot.
Tazer - forget it. He has a 30cal rifle.
Police dont shoot to wound if the public or they are in danger they shoot to kill.
Police said Valencia, 36, held up a 7-Eleven convenience store in Tucson, started a fire at a church, and then broke into a home and stole a car and drove to a Walmart in Marana, a town northwest of Tucson.

Valencia allegedly asked a store worker if he could see a rifle and then used it as a club to bash a case and threaten the employee, and ran off with the rifle and a box of .30-30 ammunition, police said. He loaded the weapon and pointed it at an officer before firing instead into the air, and was struck by the police car as he approached a business,

Valencia is jailed on 11 counts that include armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, arson, burglary, shoplifting and theft.

Milton road Greymouth originally was only able to be formed in three parts they ended up renaming a lot of it to stop the confusion.
the rest is a series of ravines hills etc. they even f-ed that up as there is still two Coulson roads that don't join up.
Karamea was a Wakefeild settlement i think the poor buggers nearly all staved to death as the land that they ended up with while flat was pakahi swamp on top of a hill incapable or even growing decent native vegetation let alone potatoes.
