so it's a couple of hours after a bit of a shoot up in chch, tough day for nz but how come various media outlets are saying between 7 and 27 dead, seems to be they have a long way to go to having any sort of accuracy before commenting especially in a serious incident such as this.

Yep, heard a whole lot of things so far that may or may not be true. Someone guessed it was white supremists, and then that gets followed up by, the police haven't confirmed at this stage. Making it sound like news.

Reporting one person dead (in a mass shooting) wont make the top of the news. Police wont say much until they have too. NZ News and accuracy are seldom mentioned in the same sentence.

It makes sense operationally for the Police to hold their cards close to the chest. They are dealing with a chaotic situation.

The media grab knowledge from where they can and chuck enough out there to keep the people watching. They have to walk the line between true reporting and sensationalism but I'm not sure our media do that very well.

Sad news but. Christchurch didn't need another kick in the slats.

The NZDF seemed to get the bombs or whatever they were sorted out quickly. Go them.

The NZ Police did a sterling job (even though the Shooter in his Manifesto stated he would not attack the Police), Jacinda did an absolutely sterling job, St Johns did a Sterling job, The Hospital staff that will be pulling super-human hours are also doing a Sterling job.

There are some very interesting conversations to come, especially around whether certain groups will use this to further their agenda/viewpoint.

Final thoughts - I'm critical of certain tenants and sects within Islam, some people have equated my critique as being synonymous with the views espoused by the Shooter - so I want to say this to both be crystal clear and to show on what points of principle I stand:

This was a Horrid attack, against defenseless people (One brave man did manage to tackle the shooter, before being shot - presumably he is amongst the fatalities - if so, he deserves a George Cross Medal), pre-meditated and viscous. It is as Vile and Repugnant as any other Terrorist attack and deserves condemnation of the highest order.

Hafidaka Allah, Aaanaka Allah.

Welcome to the rest of the world.

Pretty shocked by the entire episode. Targeting innocent people going about a regular peaceful activity.

As a matter of scale, a similar attack in the UK, would equate to around 700 people dead. If it were in the USA, the number would be almost 3,500. That’s more than the death toll from the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. Yes I know it is not a competition, but my point is that this is huge for NZ.

Everyone will know someone affected. Might be a good time to call up an old mate, work colleague, family member etc. to let them know they are in your thoughts.

As NZ vots for MP or parties not leaders.
The only time that vote for the individuals is when they also stand as electorate MP's.

That said Jacinda stood in Botany and got 77% of the vote, National never even bothered to stand a candidate against her.
Bill English was a list MP. so he got zero. he had previously iven up his seat to a guy that left under some pretty dubious circumstances.

If you use Simonnn Beeridges as a comparison he got 54% vs 26% of the labour candidate for towelwonga.:niceone:

John key was a vapid hollow shell he was was known to boast how when he worked for the now bankrupt Merrill Lynch laying of hundreds of people never effected him personally. There is a name for that its called a psychopathic personality.
His legacy was 250,000 kids living in poverty? Selling justice for few million for the Pike River, Privatising parts of some major electricity companies and costing us billions? Running up Crown debt from $10 billion to $93 billion?
I will take Jacindas decisiveness and empathy over keys smirks polytail pulling and total denial of problems like NZ housing crisis and under funding of healthcare.
John Key a man who was prime minister of a country for 8 years who says his biggest regret was the loss of life not the pike river tragedy or the CHCH earthquakes or the fact that under Key the number of unsolved sex crimes has doubled, no its was not being able to change the flag.

I just figured out why you are moaning so hard about the tax increases
It turns out both of you must be too poor to afford the average extra $51 per person in the year to 2019 (population of 4.9 million) and $162 in the year to 2022 (projected population of 5.3 million).
You must be a real bunch of no hoppers if you cant afford that especially considering
Its actually less than that as That includes the Regional fuel tax that only Aucklanders pay.

Of course National government introduced 18 tax increases since 2008.
Under funed health care by billions of dollars
Ran up the national debt by 83 Billion dollars
Never contributed to the National super fund for everyones retirement.
Yet still managed to produced a budget deficit 8 out of 9 years they were in power
Key promised promised to make housing more affordable, in 2008 the median house price in Auckland was six times the median household income. Today it is nine times.
Key set a target for exports of goods and services of 40 per cent of GDP, up from 30 per cent when he came to office. Today, exports are just 27 per cent of GDP.

Well, based on the recent turn of events, we can all look forward mightily to the introduction of a capital gains tax on 01 April 2021. Jacinda now appears to be numero uno leader of the free world, popularity seems sky high and thus a second term looking more likely. My only hope then: if they are going to put a CGT in place, let it be on every fucking thing people own - including their own homes. Let every bastard who votes them in feel the burn, including the strong inflationary pressures that drive up costs and reduce spending power.

There is no excusing that the Chch shooting incident was horrific and deplorable, but people are now caught in an emotional wave around their prime minister and mistakenly attributing national leadership capability (and understanding) to her based on her reasonable statesmanship around a tragic event. These are mutually exclusive skill sets. But, the sheep like to follow things that are shiny and glittery. Even if it is over a cliff.

The cynicism is strong here.

Perhaps, it's born of...guilt...apathy...ignorance?

Only people I've seen whinging about the events since the attack, are aging white folk. Mostly blokes, but the women of that generation tend to just parrot their husbands anyway.

Y'all wanna take a good long look in the fucken mirror, and check yourselves. Policy aside, her actions in the last week and a half are beyond reproach. Why tear her down for being the absolute best of us? It's not all her of course, there is a team coming up with ideas for what to do. That still doesn't take away from it.

Well, in the case of a lot of aging white blokes It's born of a lifetime of having socialists steal their money.

And behaving almost human in a situation where that's obviously and absolutely called for doesn't detract from the fact that they believe that demanding money under threat of violence is a cool idea.

So take your mirror and shove it, I'll reproach them to whatever extent they deserve to be reproached.

Is that because you are too poor to afford he average extra $51 per person in the year to 2019 (population of 4.9 million) and $162 in the year to 2022. you will have to stump up with to fund out healthcare and education system that you clearly need and didnt make enough use of.
You life cant be that much of a sucess if you would miss that trifling amount of money.
Its actually less as that as those figures ncludes the Auckland fuel surcharge.

"But I apologise to all my fellow representatives for those misjudgments."

5. Darren Hughes - 2011
Photo / Mark Mitchell Labour MP Darren Hughes resigned two days after it was revealed he was subject to a complaint - believed to be of a sexual nature - from an 18-year old student. 7. Pansy Wong - 2010

He was arrested 21 years later, but he denied the allegations and was discharged without conviction when it went to court. "I can do nothing to change the past. Guilt...apathy...ignorance? How about pure fucking frustration at the ineptitude of those that are supposed to lead our nation. The only real action that she has taken is to reclassify some of the Arms Act to widen the classification of MSSA weapons. Yes, she has spoken empathetically and well - that does not by any stretch of the imagination make her the best of us. There are some folk out there who go well beyond simple words in making a difference every day. They sacrifice and lead in example by doing. That's not to take away frmo the good Jacinda has done, but rather to emphasise that she has a long way to go before being worthy of a Nobel fucking Peace Award. That also doesn't make up for the umpteen other ways that her tribe are leading us down the garden path.

Oh...yeah I am white and male, but by all accounts, I should be her ideal demographic. I will concede that politics is a tough game. There will be haters regardless, simply because they are on opposing sides. That's the gig with politics and I am sure Jacinda is aware of that...she has spent her entire working career as a politician after all.

Police Minister Paula Bennett consulted with independent firearms experts, and accepted seven recommendations, but rejected 12.
But Police Association president Chris Cahill said it was an "opportunity missed".
"The culture in New Zealand should allow use of firearms safely, but also the right balance of safety, security, and knowledge of what's out there.
"It's very frustrating the opportunity was missed earlier this year, and you know what it's going to take to bring it on the table again, and unfortunately that's a tragedy."
https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/government-response-firearms-select-committee-report

After the Aramoana massacre in November 1990, John Banks, the Minister for Police, announced that the government would ban what he and others described as "Rambo-style" weapons and substantially tighten gun laws generally. The law was eventually passed in 1992 and required written permits to order guns or ammunition by mail order, restricted ammunition sales to firearms licence holders, added photographs to firearms licences, required licence holders to have secure storage for firearms at their homes (which would be inspected before a licence was issued), and, controversially, required all licence holders to be re-vetted for new licences, which would be valid for only 10 years.

The law also created the new category of "military-style semi-automatic", which like the Federal Assault Weapons Ban two years later in the United States, mainly covered the appearance rather than the functionality of the guns. These required a special endorsement, security and registration in the same manner as pistols, but could be used wherever A-category guns could.

Just a question:

Is there a country, that predominantly isn't run by 'aging white folk' that you'd rather live in?

If there isn't, may I suggest that some of the principles that those 'aging white folk' have (which incidentally have nothing to do with their skin colour) may in fact work rather well (as evidenced by the fact you don't live in those other countries) and maybe the reason they are 'whinging' is because of people taking actions that are in direct opposition to those principles?

Also, those 'Aging White Folk' lived through the Cold War, and got to see first hand the results of the Socialist/Communist experiments.

I'm going out on a limb here and suggesting those 2 things might give someone a valid reason to be critical, and that it's got nothing to do with Ethnicity, Gender or any other attributes on the Social Justice totempole.

No the god before country reference ws apt and can refer to the religion or the money. they are both the the same thing.
Religion is just another means by which the right wing robs the poor of their money and seeks to controls their thinking.
The constant references the right wing makes to communists is essentially the same as the church crying witches or the devil.:2thumbsup

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_scandals_in_New_Zealand

2016-19 September: Colin Craig cited in court during defamation case taken against him relating to sexual harassment allegations

2007 – New Zealand Pacific Party MP Taito Philip Field is arrested on corruption and bribery charges. He eventually serves two years in prison

2005 Graham Capill, former leader of the Christian Heritage Party is convicted on paedophilia-related charges and serves six years in prison. Christian Heritage disbands the following year in the wake of the scandal.

2000 – Dover Samuels Labour Member of Parliament in New Zealand from 1996 to 2008 resigned as Minister of Maori Affairs pending an investigation into alleged sex crimes he had committed before he entered politics.
The police later cleared Samuels of all charges, and Samuels alleged that the accusations had political motivation

1999 – New Zealand First MP Tuariki John Delamere is forced to resign as Minister of Immigration after it emerged that he had approved permanent residency for a group of Chinese businessmen provided they invested generously in various Māori development schemes.

1995–96 – The "Antoinette Beck" affair: National/New Zealand First MP Michael Laws resigns after being subject to a conflict of interest inquiry over employing a company partly owned by his wife to conduct a poll, signed off by a non-existent "Antoinette Beck".

1984 – Independent MP John Kirk, the son of former Prime Minister Norman Kirk, absconds, owing more than $280,000. He is arrested in the US, held in prison, and then extradited to New Zealand

1976 – Labour MP Gerald O'Brien is charged with molesting two boys, but the case is thrown out. Despite this, he was subsequently deselected as Labour's candidate for Island Bay and failed to secure re-election as an independent

1918 – Labour MP Paddy Webb is controversially sent to jail for refusing military service

Dover Samuels really shouldn't be in the list since he was cleared, although at the time it did count as a scandal. Helen just dropped him like a hot spud.

At the same time as the Samuels debacle there was news of another MP with a 'history' but he got a pass, he's still there and I don't have a problem with that.

One of those in husaberg's list was done for misusing an offical credit card. I do seem to recall a 'scandal" about another member using his offical credit card to buy porno movies. He may be more careful now?

I added it as there was a few in the national list that were scandals. also you could say the same about labours Gerald Obrien. Missing from the nats and act list is of course John banks and Chrusher and Bridges
Banks has had so many scandals its not even funny, but at last count he had had all convictions overturned.

Police yesterday released files from their investigation into two $25,000 donations from German multi-millionaire Kim Dotcom and a $15,000 donation from SkyCity towards his 2010 Auckland mayoralty campaign, which were all registered as anonymous.
Statements from Dotcom show the now leader of the ACT Party told him: "I want to help you Kim and I can help you more effectively if no-one knows about this donation."

n 1993, Mr Prebble accused him of interfering in a police tender (for flak jackets) after the deadline was extended to allow a company owned by a Whangarei friend to make a late bid. Banks was subsequently cleared.

Another Member of Key’s cabinet, justice minister Judith Collins, was forced to resign amid allegations that she leaked personal information about political opponents to a right wing blogger known as Whale Oil. The revelations — which resulted in the book, Dirty Politics — resulted from Whale Oil’s computer having been hacked, allegedly by none other than Kim Dotcom.

While Minister of Police, he was fined $750 for answering his cell phone on a commercial flight in 1991

Conflict of interest allegations were raised when, as Tourism Minister, he submitted a bid for the Waitangi Resort Hotel.

So we got this whitewash report in 2016 that Murray MCully kinda acted within the law in regards to the Saudi Sheep bribe. Nothing to see here folks, just a Senior Minister paying an $11.5 million dollar bribe to a Saudi Businessman in the sad hope that we can get a free trade deal with Saudi Arabia,

Barclay lied for months about secretly taping a staff member. Bill English first didn’t know anything, then did know something, then questioned if any such tape even existed and then admitted to being asked to listen to the tape that never existed while National Party Board members bullied staff and made veiled threats.
On top of that, English fought tooth and nail to hide his involvement and leaned on the Police to ensure that happened.
Oh and it turns out Bill sent 450 text messages to the staff member in question but he “wasn’t involved”.
