Yes tragic he died but that is a reasonably likely outcome if you are riding like a douchbag which, according to a witness he was.
Yes, It just happened around the corner from us. The rider was being an idiot. Fell sorry for the driver of the car and the riders family. A few more bikes on the road this week and non were doing what this dick did. Darwins Law in action.

Yep - Tragic all round and I suspect this won't be the last such incident we see in the coming weeks/months post lockdown.
However you've got to love the quote - '...must have been doing at least 130km/hr...' Really, so you can magically tell how fast he was going can you? Stuff - Not letting the facts get in the way of a good story for as long as anyone can remember :weird:

The seriousness of the impact on the car and the fact that the front wheel was snapped off indicates he wasn't doing 50kmh.
Serious Crash will put a range of speeds on the bike speed, based on deflection of the car at impact, and a variety of other factors.
Not that anything will bring the rider back.
Whose fault it is means nothing. Society has lost another human unnecessarily. Frustrating.

At same age but was very lucky.
I was doing 60 kph .
Told cop when asked me he didint,
Worry as was car drivers fault.
As in this case .no don't about it.
The bike can accerate very fast.
I totally Belive is dangerous intersection,it's two lane each side
Main route out Palmerston North.
Why you want traffic crossing two ,
Lane then doing hard right ,with no
Merging lane is mad .

Interested to know how fast you think someone should be allowed to travel coming up to a notorious intersection before you give the poor sod pulling out a bit of leeway rather than calling him a dick?

taking that 130kph number (again, unproven) that is 36m/sec. Count one mississippi two misssissippi three mississippi and he has gone longer than a rugby field. a 747 wingspan is slightly shorter than this at 68.5m. So in under two seconds this guy IF travelling at 130kph travelled the wingspan of a 747.
So that means dick in SUV
Sent from my CPH1941 using TapatalkNo the dick was riding the bike far too fast in a 50kmh zone....He's just won the Darwin Award...
The SUV driver was most likely thinking the bike was doing 55-60ish or so which quite common on that stretch of road.... Oops Also it is a well known problem intersection. And there were witnesses most probably a few most probablly on the side walk on both sides of the street as well as other drivers.. As mentioned I live just around the corner off Vogel Street. I use it quite a lot.

If you decide to do circa 130kmh in a 50kmh area, be prepared for other motorists to be checking for traffic at less than half your required range before they pull out.
Using those quick mental time distance calculations we all use when about to pull out of a give way, the motorist would have been caught completely off guard.

It's difficult enough to judge the speed of an oncoming motorcycle, without that judgement being exacerbated by excess speed.
The looming effect, when combined with motion camouflage, produces too many crashes like this.
If we are aware that an intersection is dangerous, how about we treat the intersection as if it is...............dangerous.
Still, every word spoken or written after the crash won't change the outcome.

Anything at 2.6 times the scale you are accustomed to would be difficult to get your head around in the first go.
thats what SHE said
Generally only in the busy hours is the intersection a real problem. Few lanes to cross. Napier Rd/Main Rd is four lanes from the Terrace End lights to the town boundary. But usually at every few weeks there is some sort of incident were this crash occurred.. Traffic lights or possibly a roundabout would certainly help. Would slow traffic a bit before hitting the boundary. The same goes for the next intersection down as that is on a road drop out of town, rise into town just by the new AFC Motorcycle location.
The "it's always the tin tops fault" doesn't help here....

Absolutely agree Bonez - The chap was clearly going too fast for the conditions (Be they weather, road, traffic etc.) and sadly paid the ultimate price.
However the media are very quick to use so-called facts to spice up a story without actually bothering to check for any substance behind them. This figure will get quoted again, quite possibly during the subsequent investigation, and will become a given despite having no basis in truth. That's what frustrates me. Plus like others have said nothing that is said will bring him back - So why enflame an already sad situation by throwing poorly thought out reporting into the mix?

Thing is, anyone who reads this thread is likely a human. Humans have a thing called optimism bias.
Until something bad happens to us, we don't believe that it will happen to us.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimism_bias
By deduction, if we don't think it'll happen to us, we won't do anything to prevent it.
Add that to illusory superiority.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_superiority
So we continue to behave as we see fit, and for some of us, it goes wrong.
Overcoming optimism bias is the greatest challenge in road safety.

This also makes for an interesting read.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-preservation
Self preservation instinct is lower in creatures less suitable to pass their genes on.
Gets very interesting where it goes Into laws surrounding seatbelts etc.
I've often noticed on motorway patrol that it's people that probably shouldn't be breeding that get pulled up for safety breaches.
It also goes some way to explaining poor hygiene, lack of forethought & a disregard for the survival based laws & guidelines, that we have seen a complete contempt for in recent weeks amongst certain groups of society.

As I said already, attitude decides outcome, some of us get away with it and some don't. Part of the growing up process.
Car driver would be expecting approaching vehicle to be at or near posted limit, which in this instance clearly wasn't the case.
