Tyrewise - how does it work?

When I 've bought new tyres recently, a compulsory "Tyrewise" levy has been added to the price. Some retailers include it in the advertised price but most don't.

I have found a new tyre for my bike on special and thought I'd buy it now to fit at the end of summer, which means finding a workshop to fit it then. My understanding from the Tyrewise website is that the retailer charges the fee, not the workshop that fits it, but they have used tyres collected for free so there should be no disposal charge.

What is also interesting is that you can take up to 5 tyres for free disposal at collection sites, which means I can get rid of the tyres that have accumulated in the workshop since our inorganic waste collection stopped accepting them.

Have I understood all of this correctly?

Retailers are required to show the tyre stewardship fee as an itemized cost on any sales invoice.

I think it's attached to the tyre purchase, and funds the used tyre disposal scheme. Maybe the charge filters through the food chain similar to GST.

When I privately bought a pair of tyres for my car I wasn't charged the levy when they were fitted, the fitter asked if I could dispose of the old ones to keep his numbers straight with tyres supplied and levies charged.

Not an issue to get rid of them any more as 5 minutes up the road the refuse station takes them for free.
