Bloody Cage Drivers - Again.

Yesterday I was helping out at the local Wine and Food festival by manning one of the entrances off a main road. I was shocked to see that well over half of all cage drivers did not indicate when they were turning off the road to enter the festival parking area. It didn't matter whether they were turning left or right, still no indicators. Of those that did indicate their intentions, quite a few actually waited until they had committed to the turn then decided it may be a good idea to let other road users know.

In the 2 hours I was on the gate 2 cops went past within 5 minutes of each other. One was GD the other HP. Strange that while the cops were in sight everyone indicated.

I've noticed that those cars that have loads of dents in them (front, sides and especially the back) are usually the ones that fail to indicate and tend to make dangerous manuveors...

These are the cars I avoid like the plague

I admit to being one of these, Zooom a bike goes past without me even knowing he was there. Happens to the best of us some times. I'm not one to do anything suddenly without indication my intentions and having a looky see first though.

We don't get much practice at lane splitting down this way, and if I am ever in the situation of having to follow a cage driver I make sure I position myself in that part of the lane where I can see his eyes in his rear view mirror.

From the little bit of splitting I did in Auckland earlier this year I would say that most drivers would be unable to see a bike in their center mirrors if it splitting, and most cage drivers aren't trained to rely on wing mirrors.

Keep two fingers over that front brake at all times when lane splitting guys. Saved my ass a few times (and is also a great way to practice stopies)

I think you'll find that we use the right hand mirror a lot, but not so much the left.

most of the sods think its just an ornament for checkin their own face in. got drilled years ago by a car who decided on a last minute rush. cost me big time ( 1 bike & check the pic) (18mths recovery) :argh: . at least the guy that got me got 6mth loss of licence & $1000 fine.

''Objects in this mirror will appear further away than they actualy are'' Don't want them releying on them too much,you need to flick from rear view to side mirrors to get an idea where things are - once that bike moves into the blind spot and then into the side mirror only,where it is on the road has become a bit fogged in the drivers brain.

Yep, try telling that to the guy I saw yesterday while out who had both side mirrors FOLDED IN and he didn't have a reveiw mirror either. Didn't stop him from changing lanes without indicating and not looking, and didn't stop me from pulling up next to him and pulling his mirror out and trying to inform him that he needs to use them.

BTW he was over 60 and driving an echo. If he was slightly larger I may have revised the idea.

Do the owners save money on them so that they can afford the heated vibrating seats to massage their overworked tushy's.

No Lou - and I read an article bout this - letter to the editor in a cage mag.....

"As a BMW driver, I have worked hard to pay for my car and I have an important job with deadlines to meet. Why can't other road users understand this?? I do not see why I need to indicate or gesture before I do something. I feel that the other road users should give way to me. After all I've earned it."
