Well, I have noticed that quite a few people here have expierence in the avation area.
I think motorcycling and avaition go hand in hand, quite a few avaitor people I know also ride motorbikes.
Anyway, I was wondering who, and what.
I fly gliders. I went solo at 14 and I am still flying.

I know of one chch kber that "fly's" quite often, although not in the way you're thinking. Gets these crazy thoughts about going on rides with his imaginary friends among other things.

Just started flying, going for career in aviation as a pilot.
See ya'll up there.
And for the 'other' option I 'fly' bikes

I have a Bronze Gliding medal in a box somewhere, earned during my 16th Summer. CBCIFTCB.
One glorious solo and then I've somehow never, ever, done it again.
Bikes give me the same fix, and I just don't have the same desire to fly that I did.

Old man used to have his PPL (lost it due to a heart condition when the new rules came in) I havnt done any flying in years... other than over the handlebars and the odd crest...

Not for 25 yrs - having to give up Piper Cubs, Moths and the occaisional run in a Sea Fury sort of took the shine off it........oh, and kids.............. Never could get the hang of flying a plane with flaps!

Got part of my way through the PPL years ago and then had to stop because of marriage, money, mortgage...
But the yearning never goes away. One day...

I'm currently plodding my way trough my PPL, solo earlier on this year. Mostly flying Cessna 152's, tho I did fly a 172 the other day, which was quite a nice change from the 152's.
I will be getting my CPL, instrument and instructors rating over the next 2 and a half years, and hopefully get a job at an airline within the next 5 years or so. Motorbikes are newish to me, but I'm already hooked.

Good man, except instead of Straps, we were told Cock-Cruncher, cos that's how tight the straps were supposed to be :)
10 hours and 30 minutes of that solo, and I was launched by a newbie tow-pilot doing her first glider tow. Ka 7 Rhoen-Adler and ASK 13 were my steeds. The Ka7 was a bit difficult to keep station on small thermals, but the 13 was a lot livelier and was even nicer with only one passenger.
Spent an hour ridge running on the Kaimais - what a buzz. Fantastic pilot who's name escapes me.

I have been on an introductory Glide out at Drury...was a birthday pressie.
Lots of fun, wingovers and stuff, but I don't think I will pursue to glide myself..like the bike thing : )
I will be going for my first 10,000 foot parachute jump soon (another birthday pressie) just waiting for a beautifully fine day...

did a bit of flying down nelson way earlier this year - went low level down the molesworth rd, ending up eventually at queenstown, then up the west coast - re-living the beach flying done by the fox majors back in the 30's. awesome week's flying. mate of mine is an oohmaanaka instructor (and Air Nelson training captain) out of motueka - tried to talk me in to flying with him, but i like my wings to be still....

I can fly light fix wings, but haven't scraped enough for my PPL yet.. It was either the bike or the licence. Kinda obvious which way it went.. Once the bike is paid off, then it'll be back to the air..

Done paragliding (I just loved it)... and gliding sounds brilliant.
Microlights too maybe but the noise is a detraction in my book...

That would be Fox Moths....amazing aeroplanes....do you realise you can fit 12 crates of beer in the front cabin and not lose any through the most hamfisted aerobatics! Lovely rugged aeroplanes - pity theres not more in the air! Was involved with Myles Robertson building new fuselages for them in 1979-80 - wonder wjhat happened to them all.......?

Can someone PM or post here all the ins and outs of getting a PPL and costs? It's something I've always wanted to do. The closest I've come though is winning the Red Bull Flugtag in Wellington.... And it's not on again next year (bastards - sorry 'nother story)

contact some of these clubs/aerodromes and see what their rates are:

a lot of places may be able to sort out deals if you ask nicely.

I always used to fly better when I was riding. At one stage, when I sold the bike to provide money for more flying and got an Austin 7 car, my flying seemed to deteriorate................

Doesn't anyone else out there fly a helicoptor?
Once actually heard a FWpilot say the only reason Helicoptors fly is because they are so ugly the earth repels them.

lol.. that's a good excuse!
Have you seen the cost of learning in a 'copter compared to a FWA? I nearly fell off the floor when I first heard..
but then the job salary from flying a chopper (and the 'cool' factor) must pay nicely

hmm....
i've done skydiving, hanggliding (f'n awesome over the west coast), aerobatics in a CT-4, 40min glider flight over wairarapa and what i would call the top of the list would have to be sitting in the pilots seat of a hercules - yeh we've all done it at airshows on the ground, but this was at 35,000ft above the pacific on the way to the USA.
OK, so it was on autopilot, and i wasnt tall enough to reach the rudder pedals, or the overhead panel for that matter, but i thought it was awesome! (i was 8 at the time)
Also rode jump seat in the herk/727/andover many a time as youngn as honourary aircrew on flights down to ohakea and christchurch.
I am currently at university but will be on the Air Force Under Graduate Scheme soon... with a goal of being in pilot training within the next 4 years - bring on the NH-90's :headbang:
as for the topgun thing - hell yeh... just dont let indy see this thread!

Did about 6hrs on my PPL when I was 16 but then purchased a brand new
Kawasaki KL250 A3, I could not afford to do/have both with only an after school job, so the flying stopped.
My wife organized a ride in a Harvard for a birthday present and that was fantastic.
Do the hours still count if you start flying again??? I have my logbook around somewhere.

The entire reason why I brought a bike was because I couldn't afford to fly as often as I wanted anymore...
But, I hope to change that in 2007.

3rd November 2005, 17:51
6hrs wouldn't really 'count', it's experience you need before your club will let you sit the ppl. 50 hrs is the minimum for a ppl, but it's not uncommon to spend 70 getting ready. so yeah, your 6 hours is 6 hours, but you'd still have to prove the basics again, which would probably take.......about 6 hours.

here's a fucked up spin...
To really get the spin going just keep that stick hard back into your gut for at least three rotations before you begin to correct. I just love to look straight down and watch the ground rotate below me.
Incidentally, I'm now 700 hours gliding and fixed wing.

starting at 3500ft though and having to pull out at 3000 doesn't help (otherwise i'm in and out of the CTA over cambridge, and it's a busy transit lane underneath that into the HN CTZ). the 152 often shakes itself out of a spin - even with full rudder and full elevator - especially if it's a bit gusty/turbulent. can't wait til we get the new robins - centre stick, fully aerobatic, 2000fpm

Passed my PPL back in the UK. Never managed to fly anything than a 152 though, and that was a heap of shite. I was just getting myself into gear to begin twin prop courses, but moved here. Haven't managed (read can't afford) to fly here yet though. One day.....

I can't fly, the british navy doesn't like my eyes, like most defence forces, can't see before their own nose (no offence to anyone who is involved, just saying about the forces in general)
Then again, planes are ok, don't really do it for me
I fly a bike and wish to fly a Ship one day, that'll do me, should be starting maritime school and hopefully get a cadetship next year :)
