View Full Version : SLOW AKL Ride: 10am Saturday 5th Nov

Hey peoples,
I would like to see heaps of learners at this ride. Come out and join in.
Looking at meeting Shell Westgate, along to swanson, through a backroad to scenic drive. Hit Titirangi and head to Huia.
This is going to be a slow ride. Others are welcome too.
Meet: 9:30am Shell Westgate.
Leave 10am sharp.
This is not a long ride, so we shouldn't need to stop for fuel. Estimate about 1.5-2hr ride. Go at your own pace, and there will be stops so no one is lost if the area is new to you.
Come along L-Plate & 250 folk.

Please Ixion.... you seem nice enough.
What the rg150 don't have on the zxr in top speed (180 vs 200ish) it will make up in the corners. If Strat and I were racers equal in the field I would not want to face his bike in the twisties, no siree.

fucking hell.
right so we leave the caltex. i see theres a bunch in front and figure theres a bunch behind. I just see the front bunch turn left so I pull over to let the other guys know to turn. wait till their all through, someone went home cos he wasnt feeling top notch, when I got back on the road you all had gone ahead... got fucked off so went north to like cowpattypatty or something I dont know. on the way back I was experiencing very frustrating power problems. on the northwestern it lost all power and colemans truck had to come out. picked me up took it back to the shop, nothing major, after all the 'omgwtflol you ran outa petrol' lines were over it went for a test ride and some crap in the bottom of the tank had gotten into the carbs. so yeah it was _low_ but not out of fuel.
It was a big KB thing though. there was heaps of people at colemans. congrats on the new job btw you.

Awesome ride, good to get out, even met some more people which is great.
Overall, Scenic Drive ain't bad, but seemed to be a bit too busy, especially cyclists all over the place thinking they owned the road.
Other than that, where were you tristan, I disappointed Rayza, he reckoned I was going to slow... :crybaby: but I like coming home. I was probably too busy perving at his bike as well...
I wonder if it wants to have an affair with me

Had a really fun ride today, fairly slow-medium pace, good sized group (about 12 bikes), great weather & road conditions, excellent twisty roads that I've never before explored in the whole time I've lived in Auckland. It was strangely depressing to find that this beautiful little place called Huia existed and I've never ever been there! :oi-grr:
Just loved the *adventure* ride up to the dam (see pics) to find such a peaceful plateau of water gushing into a huge man-made hole!
Thanks for the company all, had a good 2 1/2 hour ride and ended up going back home via JSG's Cheenic Dwive. I must admit JSG, all the negative things I've said about your beloved 'Drive' I take back...great road to ride, despite all the cyclists and Nana cagers!!
Looking forward to doing THAT RIDE again soon...is summer here yet?

Hey InDeSkyz, Thanks for the great ride. Those are nice roads, and quite sheltered from the wind. Must get out onto Scenic Drive again soon - I enjoyed the road to and from Huia more today, probably just the slightly faster pace and more easily sighted corners. Really sorry you got left out, although I don't quite understand how it happened. Maybe you're just too slow?
Nah, don't mean it. I'll definitely be up for another crack at the Scenic Drive, and that excellent cafe near the dam. Bloody good muffins, and the owner got real excited at all the bikes and asked our permission to take a photo. Although I noticed on the way back there was a cop car outside, so maybe he was just noting down the regos so he could report all those naughty people riding without helmets (they know who they are).

That cafe food was good. If you lot wanna do another Westie local ride the road to Bethels is twisty and the stall at the beach makes nice coffee :psst:
I will take something more suited to cornering next time :niceone:
My g/friend took a medium quality video of the last 15mins up untill we arrived at the cafe. but riding the whale ment she only got footage of the last 4 bikes as I could not zip past anyone in the twisty stuff.

pyrocam[/b]]...but on ride its nice if you set out people to ride ahead and mark out intersections if theres people lagging behind for whatever reason.
Therein lies complications...
I ride quite slow most of the time, so there will always be people in front.
There wasn't really anyone else by me who knew the route (JSG does, but why make him stop on his love affair road), and it was a slow ride anyway, so when we did stop, others weren't far behind.
Except, I can by no means quite figure out how when we stopped at the road where you were on the other corner.. how you managed to lose us within 50m. ??
But in a weird way, it probably turned out better for you in that you weren't far away for help when your bike broke out in.. what was it? Chicken pox?
All good man - maybe we coud do that ride more often since it is close and short and then we'll know it like the front of our hairy palms.

Pyro matey - if it's your first time don't do Cheenic Dwive:love: at night. It's not the most friendly road at the best of times.
At night it's pitch black, switch off your lights and you wont be able to see the road surface 5 meters ahead. Even with high beam the visibility isn't great and it requires quite a bit of focus. Superb if you know the corners, russian roulette otherwise.

Hope you got a shot of the guy on the 1500 sparking up a storm on the way back from Huia too. I came up on a sharp corner at speed with him behind e then you.
