After starting riding motorbikes just a little while ago, I thought I'd done a good job of convincing the extended family that it was all for a good cause.
Then I received this from my sister:

Bugger em. Who are they to tell you that you can't ride and where you can ride to. Its your bike, your life and your petrol. WTF does it have to do with them????
(Sorry, got into a debate with the partners family)

Yep, I feel for ya mate. My family loathe my bike, and they've never even met her... they once asked when my "phaze" will pass. But seriously its such a hard one, you've gotta love and respect your family but it seems as though they dont respect your decision to ride and that makes things really hard!
I am going to Rotovegas for Xmas this year, my mother tried to forbid me from riding up their, said that it'd upset her too much. Lucky for her that neither me, nor my bike are ready for that longer distance. If you do find a way of making them accept you riding please do share how you did it!

Mate as long as your riding to enjoy yourself, arseholes to em.
The only thing that matters is that you enjoy yourself, you are not going to convince non riders, that its fun.

yeah, its a hard one. My dad rode bikes for most of his life and he used to pack me and my lil bro into his sidecar when we where young, its funny how his views have changed. I often wonder if its because he did many a stupid thing on his bike in his younger years and worries that I will too? Peoples fears have to stem form somewhere....

Sez he who doesn't live in West Auckland or Wainuiomata.. If you were really a "true" bogan you'd put in the hard yards and live in one of the designated bogan habitats. Where the mullet can grow free and the jandles never slip off and your nuts never hang out of your shorts when you sit down.

no, NC - all that stuff happens here, its just accepted behaviour. Only diff is Jandal's grow titanium toe sliders.
So whats the deal. SILF getting Juzzered or Stratised?

My Dad is still alive and when I visit him (600Ks away) I often get "Oh, you didn't come on the bike this time". Our family tradition is to always have a bike of some sort in the garge. He is too old to even get his leg over my latest bike. But he still appreciates them.
I did some stupid things but he never said anything against riding bikes. And I know that he worries but after 50 years of having this daughter, he knows that if he said anything
1. I wouldn't listen
2. I would then recite to him his experiences, both before my time and during.
Instead we both look at my brother and laugh about his experiences ( and yes there is a bike in his garge too)

I just do my Super Derogatory Man act and put down car drivers as people who have to be locked in a cage cos they're a danger to themselves and everyone else, how cars are a supreme waste of money, natural resources and are seriously inefficient. How car drivers are people who have to be propped up, theres never any parking cos they're all selfish pricks who wont car pool ....... you get the picture.
You have to hurl all of that at them with extreme passion and massive loathing for all things car related and just beat them over the head with arguments against driving and eventually they can't say a damn thing except "they're still dangerous", at which point you throw some physics at them and show how a bike inherently wants to stand up, not fall over etc, and how much you know about how to ride safely, your understanding of the principles a bike works on etc. Show them how much you know about bikes and point out how little they know about how cars work.

Ah, fine taste my man...the 'sugar mummy' is good companion if you can get 'em :niceone: (they also usually come pre-domesticated and relatively free of psychological problems).
