Anyone riding to KB Trackday and staying the night at Taupo?

If so I want to hear from YAS! thinking of doing the senic route down on Sat if anyone want to join in.

Yep, planning on heading down Saturday afternoon most likely. SpankMe is also riding down, I think he was looking to leave about 2pm (there are a couple of posts in Frosty's trackday thread).

I had thought about heading down through Ngaruawhaia, Pirongia, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and across to Whakamaru (same route as Quasi used for the National Park meet). From Whakamaru you can either go across to Atiamuri (SH1) or down SH32 (West Taupo route) and cut across to Taupo via the Poihipi Rd.

What way were you thinking of going?

EDIT: added a couple of maps of possible route

Just a suggestion...if you want to continue your fun a little longer...instead of turning down Poihipi Rd, carry on the Western Access rd for another 13km and turn down Whangamata rd (2nd left past Poihipi). Don't be fooled by the first 5km after that it becomes a mix of fast sweepers and tighter fun stuff. Went through there a couple of hours ago and the surface is in good condition, no roadworks, no loose shingle, no shiny black bits and not a single car.
Whagamata rd goes past Kinloch and joins onto the southern end of Poihipi rd...you miss out the long straight boring bits on Poihipi.
Anyway.......just a suggestion.

That sell-out Spankme is going down in Death's truck.
AFAIK there's still about half a dozen of us going, most likely down the route as described by MacD.
Can we have some confirmations so we can get a meet up place sorted? Might move it forwards to 12:00 meet for 12:30 depart.

Edit => Ignore me, I probably have it wrong.

Whats ya hurry to get down there? I'd rather have lunch first, then start heading down.

I won't be able to get there until around 1:45pm so a 2.00pm departure suits me.

MadDuck: I won't be risking my licence on the way down as I am travelling on from Taupo, so I'm sure you'll be fine.

don't want to get there too late... knowing that I'll take a few rest stops on the way as well right. How about early lunch? Any guess at how long to ride down there.... ermm (4 hours? with 1 or 2 short stops)?

I do beleive it was reading this:

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=432473&postcount=34

That led me astray. It wasn't until I 'opened my big proverbial' that I realised you were probably sending another bike down to race one.

2pm is fine.

cool.... generally the more interesting roads are to the west of hamilton... and hence that makes Rotavagus much futher east of where we want to be.... Micgoo... have you any interesting route suggestions to entice us?

I have just booked a single room at central backpackers in centre of Taupo. $30, seems like a good deal. No distance from the pubs and still only 5 mins from the track.

Me and ranzer (my brother) are heading down on saturday.
I'm not sure if we'll join your group or make our own way down, my bro hasn't got a lot of open road experience and so is wary of being on the road for too long.
But I don't think I could stand it sticking to SH1 the whole way...!
Will see what happens.

Weather forecast has turned a bit shaky. Pissing down here (ALbany). Forecast for Sunday in Taupo is good though. Could be a wet ride down.

SpankMe
17th December 2005, 09:32
I just went down to AMPS to buy some DriRider wet wether gear to go over my leathers.

If it stays shitty, I might just go straight down SH1 as doing the twisties when it's this wet is no fun. Also the extra wet wether gear in this heat is even less fun so getting to Taupo sooner might be better.

MacD
17th December 2005, 09:33
Bit wet here too!

Yeah, SH1 may be the best bet. There's always 1B via Gordonton (turn off at Taupiri, joins in again at Cambridge), mostly flat and straight but avoids Hamilton.

NinjaBoy
17th December 2005, 09:51
I vote that we get there using the fastest direct route possible. No fun travelling in the Rain.

Mental Trousers
17th December 2005, 10:41
Hamilton is wet - constant but light. Unfortunately not light enough to do without wets, but not heavy enough to wash all the shit off the road.

txt me with where and when to meet you guys please.

TONO
17th December 2005, 10:58
Very wet in Rotovegas this morning with squalls going through every hour, about 20 deg tho'.
Does look to be clearing a bit right now with the sun trying to come out.
I would T/O SH1 at Taupiri and go down 1B through Gordonton as suggested, good road, miss a lot of traffic & Hamilton.
Ride safely you guys and might see you in Taupo on the morrow.

Cheers
TC

Ride down was a bit crap really. I got seperated from the group twice. WHich led to them wasting time trying to find me and vice versa in the pissing rain. Fuck was it wet, one of the wettest trips I have ever done. Still we all got there in the end.

Thanks rider in black for making the effort to find me.

Sorry for making everyone wait for me. I read this thread before leaving and people were saying SH1 would be the best bet in the crap rain so I went out to Cambridge and had some KFC. But of course they all stuck to the original plan and MacD had put the wrong number in his fun so couldn't inform me. But nevermind. I was hungover anyway and droning down sh1 cold and wet soon sorted that out.

It made to trip up a little less boring:zzzz: Had just finished "Killing A Clown" @ the Puke Autobarn, when those slow coaches on the Busa and Blackbird arrived. They were a good 1/2hour behind. Good on them for helping Quasi pack, but I was not going to hang around Taupo any longer. As it was I didn't get home until 10:45ish (made few longer stops on home), but glad ot be in my own bed.

Somehow I thought you had already left, DM said he was riding back with Chris and they wouldn't be "hangin 'round". So I thought I'd get a bit of a head start before you'd catch me.

The three of you past me at the Gull Station between Taupo/Tokoroa. Had to stop to retighten the mirror (flopping around) and pump up the tyres....

I eventually caught up just before Tirau turnoff. I was sure you would be close behind but obviously not. Anyway got to Puke at 7.10pm to re-fuel for the home straight...
