View Full Version : Waikato: Coromandel Ride Saturday 10/12/05
Zed
29th November 2005, 20:15
Our resident Aussie KiwiBiker *Zadok* will be in New Zealand in a few weeks time and is keen to ride around the Loop on the Saturday with me and several other keen KBers. We invite you to join us too if you wish.
Auckland riders meet:
Autobahn, Papakura
9.00am, leaving 9.15am sharp.
Hamilton/Tauranga riders meet:
Kopu Service Station
10.00 - 10.15am
The plan is to head off together from Kopu, around the Loop clockwise and stop at Whitianga for lunch, then continue round and back home. Depending on the weather and time I may detour down to Whangamata/Waihi and back to Aks that way.
See you there! :2thumbsup

There is a thread on KiwiBiker that discusses what weekend days Kbers prefer to ride on, I think Sunday was more popular. In this case we have decided to go Saturday, being fully aware of the Sunday Loop ride, because it's more convenient for some of us. Has nothing to do with being anti-social I assure you...well maybee a tad. :msn-wink:

I'd actually prefer the Saturday, but that weekend I've got a family thing on, otherwise I'd go Saturday rather than Sunday.

Would love to meet up with any Tauranga K.B's for ride through to Kopu. I'm not too far from the road out of town that way, so if you would like to meet where I'm staying, or at the B.P Summit, I'm happy. I intend leaving about 8am, as I want to give myself plenty of time to get there and take a few pics along the way. P.M me please.

That brings you out in Bethlehem, further north from TGA.
If you turn right and head back into TGA, then left again to avoid expressway will put u on waihi road. follow up the hill and straight thru roundabout, on a bit further then u will see BP on ur right- that is summit BP
Whew if you think you can follow my directions then go for it :-)

Well, it's overcast outside with very little wind here in Hobsonville, which is good. Metservice says the following about Thames weather:
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=navigation colSpan=4 height=18>Saturday</TD></TR><TR><TD background=/default/theme/default/graphics/DivBlueHor.gif colSpan=4 height=1></TD></TR><TR><TD noWrap width=60>Max: 24°C </TD><TD noWrap width=60>Min: 16°C </TD><TD noWrap></TD><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>(Day)</TD><TD>(Night)</TD><TD></TD><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=4>Occasional rain. What a truly fantastic ride, one of the best I've been on with KB! Thank you to all who came, everyone rode well and the group generally stuck together with the exception of poor old Zadok who lagged behind because his cruiser was bottoming out around corners, and the Coro Loop is just full of nice corners!
The Auckland crew met up nice and early as planned and got away on time to make Kopu by 10.15am where there were another 5 bikes waiting for us. We had a good sized group of 11 bikes leave Kopu destined for Whitianga for lunch, where we arrived at 12.30pm and had a good feed and conversation. Riders & bikes were as follows:
Zadok - Suzuki 1500cc Intruder
Hayabusa01 - Black Busa
Busa Pete & partner - Gold Busa
Warr - Frosty's old VFR750
Teflon - Yellow TL1000R
CaN (Christine & Neil?) - Super Blackbird
SV1000 Gal - Naked SV1000 with twin Yoshis!
JSG - CBR250RR (600kms older!)
Zapf - CB900 Hornet
Digsaw - CBR400
Aff-man - GSXR600 (left us at Miranda)
Saul - GSXR1000 (left us at Kopu)
Me - Super Blackbird
The roads were all top notch and the scenery & weather equally complimenting. We ended up not only doing the Loop but also rode down through the awesome Hikuwai road to Whangamata and then thru those challenging twisties to Waihi, where Zadok departed and returned to Tauranga and the rest of us ventured homeward up SH2 thru the gorge, which was a good stretch alongside that river and one of only two places during the ride we got rained on, and at one point it rained so hard for about 2 mins that one guy said it stung him thru the vents on his leathers!
I calculated being in the saddle for a total of 8 hours and as usual the Blackbird performed brilliantly, my body was feeling it last night though...small price to pay for an excellent days entertainment!
Some pics attached. See you on the next one!

Great to meet a fellow enthusiast too there Marty!
You must be an enthusiast to drag that piece around the loop, top marks for that.
Reminds me of an early trip to Aus & car hire. I thought wow great the land of the mighty holden. What would they give me.... Price was important tho and what did I drive away with but a tired Carmia. And tired it was. Were in Sydney and the poor thing was supposed to be restricted to the city. Took it out to the Blue Mountains. It went really well .not.!
So commiserations to you Marty. You come to the land of twisties and end up with a cruser!!
I bet that Buell you left at the shop was looking pretty good by the time you got home!! And you would have been BigDaves mate for life without even meeting him!

You know some of us deal with taking cruisers on the twistie roads everyday and we find nothing wrong with it lol.Well I followed Zadok for a short stretch to see what was happening, and for sure the foot rest was scrapping the ground with quite minimal lean on the bike. If you are not used to 'bits' of your bike scrapping on the ground it can be quite frightening! So he just slowed down and Nana'd it along - see, it is quite possible to ride like a Nana on a KB ride!! :bleh:

Buddy I'd like to see you on a huge 1500cc cruiser keeping up with us on the coro loop with large 150 size flat profile front tyres.
Zadok was doing bloody marvelously considering how difficult it must have been for him to pass cars and lean it over - he was scraping his footrests pretty frequently.

12th December 2005, 12:41
Lol I think you guys misunderstood me. What I meant was some on here do ride cruisers around the twistie roads. It is possible and not as bad an experiance as Warr was implying. (don't think I was attcking him cause I wasn't. Me and him are on good terms and ride with each other whenever I can afford to go on one and he is available for it)
Would be glad to take a 1500cc bike out for a spin, though I would make sure that it had foot pegs rather than floorboards. Even with the large front tyre. Not my preference but it will handle better with the front and rear tyres being nearly the same size.
And grinding the pegs/floorboards/whatever is fun once you get used to it. Exspecialy when comming around a corner and there is someone on the inside of it taking pictures. Then they can catch you in all your sparkly glory lol.
zadok
12th December 2005, 13:41
Some good points made about those footboards. The thing is, when it's your first ride on a style of bike you're not used to and there is a $2500 excess hanging over your head, you have to be carefull! It was all good fun.:scooter:
Waylander
12th December 2005, 13:46
Aslong as you enjoyed it that's the main thing. And those footboards/floorboards are indeed comfortable for long straight roads but they are a pain in the corners. They will almost always tap down.
Shame I couldn't afford to join you on this one mate.

Cunning blighter...would have been more cunning if he had stationed himself about 10kms past the Coro hill twisties mmmm. :sunny::Punk::Police: :scooter:

Did you go back over the Kopu-Hikuwai hills back to Kopu & home or summat? The roads to Whangamata & Waihi were in outstanding condition, you missed a treat!

Haha Dig:innocent:
Thanks for the advice :niceone:
I had to work twice as hard as I normally do, nothing was working for me...... luckily I've done the loop about 10 times so knew the roads...... :msn-wink:
Didn't help that those tyres had done 20km when I arrived at the Auckland meeting point and I had only ridden that bike for about 1 hour in my entire life and hadn't been for a ride for a month....... (excuses, excuses)
:violin:
I took your advice and went for a ride an hour ago down a lovely road called Cheenic Dwive:love: and found that I barely lost any speed by staying on the bike and the whole experience seemed smoother as I wasn't upsetting the bike by jumping around......:pinch:

Baaa pussy... if it takes you more than 40km to run in some tyres (to the edge)then you doing something wrong:killingme :killingme
See ya on the next one can't wait to see how you go when you get the hang of the bike. Was following you for a brief time and hopefully noticed you were trying to ride the cbr like the zzr and it was fecking up your lines..... this bike actually tips in so remember that:lol:

The cbr will actually tip in quite fast comparitivley. So instead of going really wide and then taking the corner quite upright. You can leave it a bit later nd get a tighter line. It will mean you can brake later and carry more speed in the corners ...
Oh and the bike will like it better.
