I can assure you I won't be throwing any of my company's money your way if that mess above is what you consider a serious sponsorship proposal.

I asked WT why he helps out 2smoker so much, He has a 7year plan of where he wants to be he works heaps and every cent he earns goes to racing...
maybe if people see this then they may be keen.

Ivan, start showing results, like turning competitive lap times and getting decent results, and sponsership will come your way. I'd suggest doing a few training schools before buying go fast bits for your bike. Isnt this the same bike Jay Lawrence raced? Is doesnt need any more engine bits, just start riding it faster.

20th December 2005, 07:24
Ivan mate, you need to take a major reality check. I think the first thing you should be worried about is learning to ride, its harsh I know, but someone needs to tell you. You aren't very fast at all and the sooner you realise that the sooner you can start learning to get faster. You can have all the money in the world and the flashest most trick bits for your bike but if you're not able to ride it then you're still not going to come anywhere. You need to take a step back and then work hard at getting faster and faster. Then you might be able to start coming in the top 3 or higher and then you can go looking for sponsors and maybe go overseas. If you can't get in the top 5 at a NZ 125 meet then you're just wasting your money by going overseas.
My 2c anyway.

Yes ivan, as friend to friend,
jay came second place last year on that bike, and it is still exactly the same as it is now.
so as K14 said, spend more time trying to figure out why you are going slow. If you go fast you get sponsors.

what ever you want to post, write it in microsoft word or what ever that has a spell check and use it to correct spelling. So that it makes it easier for us to read.

Gentlemen,
Cut poor Ivan a little slack. His heart is in the right place; he is trying to be reasonable and help fund his own racing.
But, Ivan spell check! – I know that it is a pain in the ass sometimes. I have to.
Even though this was a quick information gathering excise, it does reflex on your preparation. Money is the serious side of racing. People that part with their money want something in return. Ten years ago businesses received tax brakes for sponsorship / advertising, this is no longer.
So the question has to be asked why should someone / business give you money if it doesn’t benefit them? – You have to make them believe and see that it can.
Chin up mate. Its good to see that you give a damm, and that you are starting to realize that racing isn’t cheep.
My 2 cents

with ya there bert,
but as it is clearly visable, Ivan needs to spend a little bit more time and effort into the proposal before expecting money.
i have spent hours and hours making a formal contract for sponsorship, and i tell you it is very hard. i have one very seriously considering my proposal.
i would like to tell you but it is a business thing, ill keep it under my hat ;)
but as you said, good on ya ivan for trying, just a little more preparation will go a very very long way.
and yes thats all of my 2 Cents

your right. . . .
‘your right’ as in ‘it is your right’?
But presumably you really mean ‘you are right’, you can shorten this if you may to ‘you’re right’. The apostrophe takes the place of the missing letter/s.

Focus, on racing and track days... Improve your riding. Disect all your laps and races in your head, and think where you can go faster and do it in the next race/track session.
For instance you need to go ALOT faster through Splash (turn 3). You should be going full throttle through turn 1 and turn 2, followed by a quick dab on the brakes before turn 3. Brake later EVERYWHERE. These are the things that you need to be thinking. (i watched your racing when i was watching K14 :niceone:)
Yourve got the right attitude mate :niceone: You want to take your racing to its fullest. But dont plan to do international racing next year, plan it in a few years these things take time. Also dont think that your fast or cant take onboard what other racers say. For instance i talk to racers after EVERY race. This is so i can see how i went, where i can improve, techniques they use for different parts of the track etc... Racing is all about learning, so get out there with the attitude "I want to learn"...
Hope this gives you a bit of help mate :niceone: Dont ever give up, and dont waste your money on modification... My ZXR400 doesnt have any mods and im still consistently in the top 10 of F3 racing at National level...

I was going to try and race a complete season before I go out asking for sponsorship. I want to get some kind of record down on how well I can ride.
Any idea on who I should contact to get sponsored by Hells Pizza? I wouldn't mind my bike painted in the company colours, that would be awesome. :2thumbsup

For the record, it's spelt sponsorship.
But it sounds like what you're more interested in is donations. A sponsorship is a two-way relationship from which each party derives measurable benefit. Any credible sponsorship proposal needs to talk as much about what's in it for them as it does about what's in it for you.

what do ya think??
You probably need to have that in your proposal somewhere, but I wouldn't lead with it.
What is it that you will be offering your potential sponsor? Lead with that. You want to firstly get their attention and then build a compelling case as to why you are the best opportunity for them to invest their hard-earned dosh. You need to do more than just telling them that you plan to go fast.

If I was a company owner, and read that (SM.doc), my thought would be:
So What!
So here's this kid who thinks he's gunna be somebody. Don't they all!
You need to catch their attention with some good, 'Whats in it for them' stuff.
Sure have that as a filler to tell them who you are, but not at the begining or it will hit the bin before they even read anything of interest to them.
(Unless they already know you. then they might read page two!)
Re: Intro.doc
That would be better. It would at least keep me reading to find out if I was interested.
But maybe you should tell us your secret ideas! Come on! We're all friends here!!:shifty:

Yeah I always talk to other riders and that but yeah I just want to start funding to get more track time as alot of people know it is expensive and running 2 bikes aint cheap either it is the same as jays but he had the trick bits on it owned by musuem hotel I didnt get them with the bike the only thing the same is the frame and fairings lol
I even have a book I write in after races I know about Splash but it is the line I take through there and I am trying to learn so much the Aus thing that is a bit out of it but I want to go there to live and be a bike mechanic over there and live in melbourne so yeah
I know it is hard and I need more track time yes but is expensive to travel to a track I am concentrating on Vic Club next year I dont understand why I was doing 1 33's and usally doing 1 24's

You also need to work out who you are looking at targeting for your sponsorship drive, eg at a motorcycle event, your usual crowd is going to be interested in motorcycles :sherlock: hence are you targeting a motorcycle related sponsor? At the end of the day, the company or business you approach have a certain amount of money that is used for advertising. They will need to decide are we going to give this guy say $500 or am I going to run some radio ads or another advert in the local paper?
Try and think outside the square too, obviously if you can find out if the owner has an interest or had an interest in motorcycles you have more chance of getting your foot in the door. Not sure how you'd go putting your bike on display in the local mall, say, but also offer your bike available for a window display for a week if appropriate. The one advantage to use is the fact that their investment will be more than a one off radio ad or a one off paper advert. Point to the fact that hopefully you are talking of advertising their name for a fixed season, up to 12 months long.
I bought one of the first NZ new Honda VFR400 ProArms (paid $10,000  ) , I approached a local business and secured a deal I was happy with, the racing side was really irrelevant as I lived in Nelson, where the business was but travelled to Ruapuna in Christchurch to race, now the shop didnt have a lot to gain by advertising in Chch for waterbeds etc. But what I sold was a mobile sign that travelled daily in the Nelson business area (as I rode the bike daily to work, I only had the red tank for racing, which I eventually got painted to match).
Now I knew he use to race MX, so that helped but he admitted that he was approached weekly from people looking for sponsorship and all convinced that they were worthy of support.
