yes.. and yes. I won't tell you what i do for a living :blip:

make sure your settings say use packet data when needed, not all the time as when your in poor coverage areas, Check here (http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/3g/cities/Taupo/maps.jsp?image_id=1_1&item=3g), the performance/quality will be questionable.

Other than that should be all good?! You enjoying it? made any video calls yet?

Had one ( here in Japan) ...gave it up , now use a cheap vodaphone prepay and a wireless modem in me pda ( unlimited connection 64k and 1/2 the price of the 3g ...)
be interested to hear about NZ experience ,,,( yes you can see the person who you are speaking to ,,,but its the wife ,,,and I sorta remember what she looks like anyway ...)

I am considering getting it, I just dont know if it is worth it. I will need a new phone and the monthly charges will depend on how much is used. So still wondering if it is worth upgrading.

The main reason I am looking at 3G is because I would like to receive / send emails using the phones interface. This would allow me to communicate with people overseas while on the move. SMS is great but restricted to 160 characters and it must go to another GSM phone. I know in Japan they have this and it is very useful. I was just wondering if it can be done with Vodafone 3G.

haven't tried video calling.....

hi mate, you can get a 2g phone that will allow your phone to send and recieve emails; have a look at the blackberrys or the 3g equivelant which is the i-mate jasjar ; upto you really, the latest and greatest is 3G which will let you roam and send to any country, unlike teleskum.

Cant tell you how much it costs as mines paid for by the business, Anyhows happy hunting and enjoy what ever ya get :mobile:

Most of the high end GPRS capable hand sets have a pop3 client in them. My K700i does as did my T610 and T39m.

Works a treat as long as you're not an xtra customer cos Telecom are a bunch of fags that wont let you check pop3 mail from someone elses network dor 'security' reasons.

funny that, i tried to add my xtra account to my phone and couldn't; rang telecom cust services and they told me it must be a fault with Vodafones end! i laughed and told the girl i was an engineer at Vodafone and all was sweet.. she then said oh thats right we dont allow it for security reasons.. what a bunch of tossers!!! :eyepoke:

3G - shite, and doomed to failure IMO.

A neat little fashion accessory that will die off in around 5 years. Insufficient global uptake, small (video) screens and no killer application to help it take off will guarante it's demise. Sure they're cool now, because the cost per packet (data) are being kept low in order to attract new customers. Just wait until people start having to pay full whack.

I normally charge $1500 an hour for this kind of consultancy.

Donations to Spank please. ;)

The killer application that's made mobile telephony what it is today Boomer. And for those fourking evil abbreviation mathingies.

I received a text the other day that had AIUI in it.

Apparently it's an abbreviation for, "As I understand It".

Total wank AIUI.

:tugger:

I believe that these phurking abbreviations are invented and distributed by mobile phone companies, so arseholes like me have to send a text back to the muppet that sent me the original text asking, "What the fuck are you talking about!"

Bastards.

Fukin classic.. yeah i struggle with the txt'in language too.. getting old mate.

Streaming video, video calls, on demand music ( think replacement ipods mate ) and then theres the IT sector.. its coming mate theres no doubting it.. just a case of when. I hope so any way, it needs to keep paying my bills!!! :yeah:

As I said had 3G ( well I reckon Ntt was 21/2 g ) and yes It had music and Email and video, I never actually used them
My mates new one plays Mp3 when it rings,,,but I have some thing the size of a fifty cent piece that has 500meg card in it .
I did use the camera , it was handy if the missus was one end of the dept store and I was in the err toy section ( or the diy section) and she wanted to know where I was / or ask about some thing , we could just take a picture and view it
The weather on imode was handy .....but I gave it all up for the simple life ...a vodaphone prepay ( has global roaming) its well 1/6th the price ...overall price
and I use a wireless modem card in my Pda ( I have the sony one with the keyboard ) So I can browse the net and do everything that a small pc could do. browsers a bit slow must admit , and the chat feature I dont use ( and if skype ever does a programe for palm software I am in !!)- wireless card also is used in the Laptop

So usually just carry the pda, and 1/2 the time I foget where I have left the phone !!

Stephen

and they paid soooooooo much money for the 3g networks to....

Sounds like standard helpdesk operator "I don't know the answer so will make it up crap"

If your using xtra from a differenet ISP you must use the remote settings.

Try these and see how you'll go.

You would have missed out on GPRS (General Packet Radio System) in Japan. Over there operators opted for EDGE (Enhanced Digital...can't remember what that rest stands for) and/or HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) as their step (2.5G) towards 3G. Both damned fine mediums supporting a more reliable, faster (peak) and consistent data rate than (most) GPRS networks.

You've also got a UMTS2000 3G service. Pretty much the same as 'standard' UMTS/CDMA systems used in most of the rest of the developed world, including NZ.

My guess would be a MI5/6 Spy living in NZ pretending to sell IT encryption software for corporate networks so the Brits can spy on us.
Then again he's probably become an IT geek specialising in Telecommunications. Of course, Biff will tell you that he’s the next Rossi / Or Pornstar and is waiting for his next contract.

Please excuse me while I brag - I know my shite when it comes to anything that involves wireless communications systems, be they public (mobile phones, 802.11* etc) or private (PMR etc).

12 years working with/for/in the UK/US govts.

and what ya doing now?

Mobile radio comms (PMR) mostly (analogue - MPT, conventional etc & digital - P25, MIMO etc). I work in a kind of business development/strategic role.

I'm contracted to do some consultancy work outside of my current job description at the moment, but this ends on the 16th of this month. Then I'll begin concentrating on the Indian sub-continent for the forseeable future.

Ive only ever owned a vodafone, never actually had anything to do with telecom mobiles. Should anyone want that to change, feel free to donate a replacement phone, otherwise the current one will have to do:laugh:
