Coming through the tunnel out of wellington tonight, a very interesting sight...

A cop bike being ridden gingerly on to a tow truck.
Then a private car with a front wheel shaped dent in the boot.

1 + 1 = ooops.

Must have been the bloody car driver's fault, must have done something stupid like stop when he/she obviously wasn't far enough in front of the cop bike for it to avoid her. Tut tut. :niceone:

Thinking back, looks like he was ok cos there were two other bikes on the scene and there were three riders.
I didn't see any scuff marks on jackets though.

Does anyone know that happens to a cop if they have an at-fault accident?

They "generally" get a ticket like anyone else... of course, there are a few "discretionary" decisions in which case "NFA" (No Further Action)....

Dangerous? dangerous? man, I never knew you could do somebody for 'dangerous' for that sort of thing!!

Have YOU ever been charged with Dangerous Driving just for running into the rear of a car??

$150 for Fails to Stop Short is the norm.

Let him off I say.....he may have been distracted by a 'Police' matter and presume that they look around more than average road user.....or the car could have cut him up......I actually think the whole idea of being fined for 'Hitting someone in rear' is harsh in today's traffic conditions......in the UK and other countries they don't ping you.....a lot depends on friction of road at time which can change hourly and affect braking, you may have someone tailgating you so you are distracted.........etc

So how much were the repairs to your car then??

I still think it should be madnatory to have insurance to use a car like it is in britian and the states....premiums would drop heavily..

Insurance?? I'd settle for requiring a brain.

Possibly not......think of how many cars are not insured and part of Insurance Statistics........after 6 months of being introduced they could have cash flow problems.

Should introduce minimum TPO.......which is cheaper but could still have an adverse impact on premiums.....remember Insurer's need to be able to pay claims and make money and with a law change they could get caught out so premiums could go up

A bloke rear-ended me when I had my SR250 a few years ago. Needless to say I was really pissed, we swapped details, but I called into the Panmure cop shop, asked what i could do, I had him charged with dangerous driving, and as it was a clear case of him being at fault i didn't have to appear, he did, and he got convicted.

The damage to the bike was about $150.00, I received a shitty letter from him saying that I shouldn't have sent him to court and because of that he wasn't going to pay, he didn't, and for $150.00 I wore the cost rather than push the issue.

There is always a police enquiry and the cop will likely face charges or tickets for the offence, whichever is appropriate. In this case it sounds like a failing to stop short offence which is a $150 instant fine.

There is usually also a PCA enquiry and an internal disciplinary enquiry. There are a number of disciplinary results depending on the seriousness of the event.

That hasn't been the case in the UK. Bike premiums are through the roof - 30% of the bikes value as a premium and you can't escape it becasue it's compulsory.

.

That's because there's a few thousand of you and 4 million of us, and your bosses have lost you a great deal of public goodwill.
Not a very good trade off for getting Robbie a New Years Honour. (He would disagree, I bet he wishes it was Sir Robbie)

In the UK car and bike premiums are very expensive, far more so than here. One of the main reasons why it's so expensive is because it's compulsory. The fkers have you over a barrell. Everyone has to have insurance, so you have to pay the premiums. And, of course, collusion and price fixing is illegal under European law.......allegedly.

But I'd still vote for compulsory insurance.

Where's Bykey Cop?

...and he was stupid enough to send you a letter saying that? Jeezuz, why did you not give it to the cops? Point is, he could easily have killed you- he had obviously learned F.A. from the experience if he was getting shitty about 150 measly bucks! Grrr.

I was only about 16 at the time, and wasn't as wordly about fighting those types of things as I as I am now. You are right I probably should have done more about it at the time, but I also recall feeling a wee bit guilty afterwards, I mean that the damage wasn't that bad, and I was ok, and he ends up with a DD charge. On the other hand he was a stuck up yuppie who lived in St Heliers, who could have killed me, so really no regrets.

Insurance is VERY expensive in England and Ireland, I knew a 20 year old guy who was paying 2000 pounds a year to insure a 1991 Ford Fiesta (Not modified!)

I think Insurance should be compusory but the Government would have to regulate the prices and make sure they they did not jump steeply:Police:

Its good in theory anyway until someone pays out the government with donations towards their campaigns:stoogie:

um. civil proceedings (cost recovery) vs criminal (prosecution) dont have anything to do with one another. You have six years to claim I think... if you want some help PM me.

Well I got charged with dangerous driving for nearly being rear ended by a police car. And ended up in court. And they were nice enough to drop it to careless, which worked out cheaper for me so I went with that option. That was back in the days when charges meant nothing to me so I just took the cheapest option at the time.

I may sound like an arse but I have had plenty of run ins with the cops. I have no prob with getting tickets etc for speeding because the law is the law and i know the penalty BUT when i get a $1500 fine cause the cop took ten minutes to catch me when i was in my mini and I wasn't trying to run just out for a blat and he made up HEAPS of shit. He even said to me " I'm gonna try and make this over a grand" He added things like not indicating while changing lanes and going through a red light when I had not swapped lanes and thier were no lights on the street. I've also been pulled to the ground and kicked a couple of times by a coppa while waiting for a pizza on Remuera rd. Apparantley there was a party they had broken up just up the rd a little bit and thought i was one of them, but still no excuse to grab me from behind with no warning and then put the boot in when i was on the ground. I have meet a few nice cops (the best so far was a bike cop) but I have met many many more arseholes so i have a poor opinion of cops. Sorry for the generalisation. I know you all just doing your job.
