Well maybe they should implement more stuff like the following UK example.
A major new campaign launches today (Monday, 30th January) encouraging drivers in towns and cities to – get this mind-blowing proposal – “take longer to look for bikes”. An estimated 1,500 motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured every year when drivers look but fail to see them. It feels like we've been telling people this since the late 1970s and finally someone in a position to do something has acted on it. For which we say thanks. And then add a cheeky and heartfelt, "about fucking time".
Stephen Ladyman, Road Safety Minister, said: "A quick glance is not long enough to check if a motorcycle is approaching. Drivers need to take an extra second or two to look out for bikers. It really can be a lifesaver.
He added: “'I enjoy biking, but I worry about not being seen. At the same time bikers have a responsibility to look after themselves and make themselves as visible as possible to drivers."
Department for Transport research shows the most common cause of motorcycle crashes are “right of way violations” where, typically, where one vehicle fails to give way to another at a junction. In over half (65%) of these incidents where the driver is at fault, the biker was visible. Stone me, who'd have thunk that, eh? Oh, yes, anyone who's ever ridden a motorbike in any town, on any day of any year.
Then after that they could work on DON'T DRIVE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.
Closely followed by IF YOUR IN THE OVERTAKING LANE YOU'D BETTER BE OVERTAKING SOMETHING, IF NOT THEN FUCKIN MOVE OVER.
There should also be a "Stop being a cunt" legislation. But noooooo we'll just keep on hammering the speeding thing. 1500 bikers killed or seriously injured every year. 1500!! Fuck.

Dear Mr 600,
Thank you for taking the time to table a novel concept of making solid gains in meeting our road safety targets of -73 fatalities per year by 2031. Our accounts team have thoroughly reviewed your proposal. Their analysis showed long-term sustained reductions in injury and fatal accidents would occur within several years, resulting in lower expenses in emergency services, heathcare and associated social services. However, the key factor in our consideration of your proposal was the immediate financial viability. Our senior accountants using our models were unable to simulate any immediate income stream generated by this proposed initiative.
Regrettably your application to instill common sense into our road safety campaign has been DECLINED.

And here we see why a bit of common sense is being injected ito UK law - their Road Safety Minister is a biker! If we had a few bikers in similar positions rather than a pack of retarded cagers, we might get proper safety rules on our roads, too.
I vote we get that chap to immigrate - that's one "whinging pom" I wouldn't mind seeing take up a plum job in our govt...

Very sad to report that a biker lost his life in Tokoroa last night on SH1 in a collision with a truck. Even sadder to report that he used to work for me a few years back and was an ace guy. He was a very experienced rider but to date, we don't know the circumstances. It was raining and right on dusk.

If everyone was forced to ride a motorbike, just for an entire week, I believe there driving habits would change. I can't vouch for anyone else, but my driving skills, I found, became alot more alert after riding for about 3 weeks.

the whole reason this campaign started (with some decently shocking tv ads) was that Motorcycle news found out he (Ladymen) had a bike licence, and blagged him free ducati Multistrada for a fortnight. first comment afterwards from riding in London was "car Drivers are blind" not exactly shocking.
Still, hope the new campaign does some good, at leat people may vaguley recollect something about bikes at the next T Junction.

(obAOL) Me too! Seriously, since starting riding I've found my cage driving has got more restrained and (hopefully) safe. I look down junctions and am much better at looking further forwards.
It's a great suggestion - everyone who wants to drive has to spend six months on a 250 single like me :) Suffer, bastards!!!!

Didn’t work for me... Hard out into a corner, lent over and the stupid car went straight ahead! Dunno how people can get from A to B in those damn things...
Be good to have people on two wheels for a year befor getting a car licence, even from a numbers only perspective 1 death Vs 5 or 6 deaths in a single crash? Got to be better than the system we have now.
Good to see them looking at a graduated license finally, hope its going to be monitored.
Why is cell phone use in cars not illegal yet?

When has driving without due care and attention ever not been an offence? I completely fail to see why we need another separate law about this....

Because there are so many retarded people texting or yakking on the phone when they should be driving because, like all people of diminished intellect, they are incapable of assessing how stupid they are and in fact think they're geniuses capable of simultaneously writing a letter and keeping an eye on the road.
We need a law to make cellphone use while driving illegal in order to spell out, in words of one syllable for these morons: "do not do it!"

The commercials might appear that the UK takes a grim view of people who don't pay attention but there is a flaw in that.
I have seen plenty of commercials posted on the net about biking and road safety but never actually see them on TV.
I don't watch a phenomenal amount of TV, but the stuff I do never contains bike ads.

I think the road toll will only come down when they start doing compulsory driver ed. Some of the bikers I see are worse than the tin boxers.
