View Full Version : So here she is, my new CBR400
Postie

Well i say new, its an '88 but she has had a makeover.
I bought the bike about 6 weeks ago, it hadn't been started since March 04, the brakes were seized, it didn't start, the ignition barrel was broken so the old cowboy owner hooked up a kill box in the back and a flick switch at the front and in the process, manged to screw the bikes ignition wiring up.
I took the poor looking thing home, washed her, stripped her, shaved heg legs, fed her and gave her a bed.
so work done to get it to this point, full respray, new ignition barrel and wiring, new ignition solenoid (which got so baddly burnt it melted the fuses enough to start dripping plastic on the floor)
new mirrors, new fluids, brake seals and brake master cylinder rekitted.
New chain, second hand gear set and thats about it.
So i decided that i really want a VTR SP1, so i borrowed the paint scheme, or sort of. the painting is not finished yet but its 90% done and it has all be done by hand out of cans from place makers. the idea in donig that is because i wanted to make sure that i like the paint scheme and colours before i commit to it in 2 pac paint.
So thanks to :
Buggy for the hours we spent on the brakes, for the garage space and tools and letting me turn up and work when ever i liked. :niceone:
Pyrocam for the awesome welding work on the screen brace. :niceone:
Firefight for the battery charger. :niceone:
And a huge thanks to Cibby for letting me work on the bike with out bitchin or moaning once, in fact the paint work was mostly the art creation of Cibby. So not only is she the perfect girlfriend for letting me fondle my bike almost more then i have fondeld her in the last few weeks ( i say almost, i play with Cibby more then i play with myself or anything else :msn-wink: )
so not only that but she worked on the bike and got down and dirty and did a bloody top job on the fairings, she sanded, primered, sanded and painted and masked all the fairings for me. She had never spray painted anything before and i was a little nervous, but i had all faith and it paid off.
So hopefully it will get through a WOF and we'll be away laughing.
there are still a few things to finish, i have some new mirrors with indicators in which arrive soon, so the side indicators will be removed and the panel smoothed and the black honda wing applied to the side then the CBR decals will be place, some new rubber and the suspension needs setting up properly.
So without further ado, pics below.
I have some before pics but they are at home, so i'll have to post them later on tonight.
to give you some idea, the bike was dirty, had stupid micky mouse mirrors and was white with 2 differnt shades of blue.

ok so i just went to the LTSA in Kingsland to see what i need to fix to get it passed them, rode in, first thing, the lights are not quite right for their light angle box thingy..... bollocks, fallen at the first hurdle. but then the English dude who is doing the WOF, pulls out a wee screw driver and starts to fiddle with the bike and gets the lights aligned :niceone: then sends me in to get the paper work, bring it back out to him... tick tick tick, and your away. Sweet.
I have never had a vehicle this old before and never got through a WOF at this place with out somthing needing to be fixed, so i super stoaked. Didn't want to go there but its close to work and my options were limited.
So now even if i'm not legal, at least my bike is.

I also bought one a few months back. I had to source some parts to complete the bike - fairings, bar ends and few other bits and pieces. Except for the painting of the fairings, it is as original as you can get. I'd have to say that I enjoy riding this bike more than the GSXR750V that I also own. A lot less effort to ride and quite enjoyable at legal speed. I also managed to source a set of decals from UK for this bike costing ~13 pounds including air freight - high quality. I will be puuting it on once I get it repainted. Here is the link to the bike before/after work done on it;

.....and lane split at 140-150kmph and ride at 90-100 in 50 zones and treat red traffic lights as give way signs and tailgate cagers till they move over and ride above your skill level and crash and hop around like a handicapped kangaroo.........:woohoo:...... See - good thing you had help.

Are your fairings still not off from the Taupo trackday?...in case you drop it,I think you said ???
And that cornering style round the sweeper.. well a GP Star couldnt look any better, Thats why you got the leathers to match!
Must be eh bubba, remember I'm supposed to be dumb.
Fairings are on now. Only bought the bike a week before the track day and was still getting used to it......
That track day was a joke...... gonna replace the fork oil and maybe turn the shock up a notch and see if that makes any diff.......
See ya in 7 weeks.

yeah sorry bout that bro, had a guy wanting to buy some mini moto's off me and i couldn't say no at the moment, needed the mullar for my stupid car.
I'll take you up on that powder coating though and i'll definatly be out for a ride with you asap. I need to tighten up the rear suspension and get some more gas or oil (what ever it is ) in the front forks. The bike is too soft for my liking. Also i need to get Kerry at Motohouse to give my tyres the once over and see if he thinks they are safe to use.

looks good mate. Just two things to watch for - make sure you cover the nossle(sp) when filling it up with gas otherwise if any fuel gets on the paint it fucks it up.
Also you might want to put some of that 3M clear protection stuff on the tank where it meets the seat and where your knees 'rub' on the tank, that'll stop it from rubbing through.
Be good to see you out on the road - take it easy!
