View Full Version : How much sleep on average?

I don't hate sleeping, but I do dislike 'down time' which in my book includes sleep. After speaking to a few other people it occurs to me that I get significantly less sleep then the average person. I will be up most nights until 2am, some nights earlier (by half and hour) and some a bit later. In all honesty I don't go to bed because I'm sleepy, but more because I feel guilty that I should get some sleep. I wake about 7-7:30 every morning (including my day off) and do not find myself lethargic at any stage of the day despite whatever I'm doing. I've probably been like this for the last 20yrs of my life (30 now).

So I average 5hrs of sleep a night, which to me now as I type this still sounds like too much to me. I think it boils down to me spending a lot of time at work, and when i get home there is so much I want to do. Catch up on reading, ride my bike, watch a movie, spend time on the computer, spend time with my wife and daughter when she stays, visit friends or entertain at home. The idea of going to work, coming home for dinner and an hour to do whatever then being in bed by 9 scares me. I love work, but I work so I can afford to do the things I want. And I want the time to do those things.

How much sleep do you get on average?

I find it hard to nod off sometimes, but when i do, i sleep like a log really. I try for about 7-8 hours sleep, but only get like 6 i guess

Probably 6 - 7 on average. Very rare to get more than 4 hrs at a time though, then lie awake for an hour or two pretending before nodding off again.

When sleeping during the day (the joys of shift work) that would be 2 hrs sleep at a time 4 hrs a day would be the norm then.

When training to run a Marathon I got 9hrs most nights - never slept like that before or since.

i get about 6 hours a night, which to me is heaps.

the more i can fit into a day the better it is. We arent on this earth long, so i dont want to be sitting around sleeping all the time ...

I get to bed around midnight, has been that way for 30 yrs,my alarm goes at 5.45am.I never have trouble sleeping, but if I go to bed at 11.30 I can't sleep.Even my kids go to bed at midnight, but they are homeschooled,so get up when they feel like it.I like early mornings, but don't really like getting up in the dark.

My wife keeps crazy hours, she seems to have no sense of time, often I get out of bed as she gets in,after working all night. She finds it better to do her office work at night, and keeps going until she's done, regardless of time.

Try for about 18 but people make me do things, get around 6-7 but have nasty bouts of insomnia every now and then.
I'm a total joy to be around then!
I get enough sleep when I'm driving...

I normally get 6-8 hours, but every so often I get a 12-16 hour sleep. Kinda knocks back my plans a bit. Although I'm also known to go as far as 72 hours without sleep, but I don't recommend it. Usually only do 48 hours no sleep these days...:weird:

I work shifts, either 22:15 to 06:15 or 15:00 to 23:00 so sleep is not done at the "normal" times...
I get by with about 5 hours sleep at a time!

Our shifts are 12 hrs being 7 to 7 (07:00 - 19:00 or 19:00 - 07:00)
We do 2 days, 2 nights four days off.

Get real good at functioning on about 4 hours kip. My kids worked out fairly quick which days to tread carefully.

Most of the time I switch off like a light bulb and when I wake I'm wide awake instantly. This is "most" of the time, sometimes if I've got something bothering me I'll keep waking up thinking about it.But that doesn't happen often. After a hard day riding or walking in the bush I've been told I snore like a train,,,never worries me but.:msn-wink:

On average, I suppose 6-8, but I'll take as many as I can get.

Often I find its like a sleep bank, and you are given 8 a night, don't take them all, and you have to take them later.

Being a student as well, all nighters happen, even had two all-nighters in a row (very not recommended) and on the flip side, I think I have slept for about 16-20 hours straight. :eek5:

I like to get more than 8 hours sleep per night.

Last night it was ten and a half hours. Tonight it will be less than 8 though, as i start work at 4am, and living with other people makes sleep before 9 impossible...

When I work lots of days in a row, I'll have a 2 hour nana nap in the arvo, and sleep for about 7 hours at night.

When school is on i'll be sleeping about 9 hours a night, give or take.

Wake up sometime between 7 and 9, then head to Uni. Goto bed at sometime between 12 and 3am. Depending on what I'm doing with mates.

For a start TraD_MaN if you don't like it that much, get another job. Doing something you like and/or love doing, something you're passionate about. It's noty healthy to do something you hate for people you'll end up hating. Study or get online and find something.

As far as sleep goes I can't remember the last time I got a solid 6-8 hours sleep. I generally will sleep for about 2-3 hours at a time, wake up and try to go back to sleep. That lasts all night. I train 4 mornings a week so I'm used to getting up at 4:45. I'm always tired. It's not a medical condition I'm just shit at sleeping.

Rarely get to bed before 10:30pm and I'm up at about 5am. Doesn't matter if I'm working or not, that is the usual pattern.

I normally get around 7 but ideally I need about 9 to feel good again. Got just over 10 last night. Still haven't recovered from 3 nights in a row of 6 hours or so 2 weekends ago when I went down to ruapuna for the nationals. Can never get to sleep before 10:30ish so that screws up sleep in the week, having to get up around 6:30 to go to work.

one thing I like about the japanese is the sensible hrs of employment , I dont have to start the day job till 2 pm and I dont start actual work till 4 pm
So my morning job , playing with motorbikes , i can start around 10.30 so first coffee would be around 10 ,
which means I am in the pit for around 10 hrs

It doesn't seem to matter what time I get to bed, I invariably wake at about 6am. Went to bed at 1am this morning, woke at 6am, fed the kitten about 7am and put some bread on to bake, then fell asleep again and woke at 9.30am! Most unusual!

When I was a teenager I could go to sleep at 8pm and not wake until about 3pm the following day - my mother used to worry that I had died in the night! In winter I tend to wake at about 7am but we live in the country so there is no need to shut the curtains at night, so I wake earlier in summer.

Well it seems I'm not so strange after all, plenty of people here operating fine on less than 6hrs sleep. I might even try to find what are the minimum hours I need over the next week or so, nothing stupid like 2hrs kip every night but maybe reduce it to 4 to 4.5 hrs as just an experiment. Sometimes at 2 in the morning its still and quite warm outside so I'd like to get out on the bike and go for a ride in the countryside but I feel that I should get some sleep, not need though. Who is up for some 2am rides in ChCh now huh??
