View Full Version : Dropped the ZX-10 tonight...

But no I didn't crash it !!!

I pulled up to friends place tonight. Stopped the engine and put the sidestand down while still astride it like I normally do. As I leaned it over onto the stand I bumped the stand so it retracted. Now the ZX-10's 230kg's+ wet weight (had a nearly full tank too) kept going and with all of my strength (not huge) I laid it down trying to save the clutch lever. The mirror folded in like it's supposed to and gained some new scratches but that was all. I then picked it up (another feat of strength) to avoid further embarrassment.
:sweatdrop
I 'm going to repaint the whole machine this winter anyway I thought but what a bitch !!

Also thought, time for some fairing tang thingies (can't remember what they're called).

doesn't it suck when you do embarrassing stuff like that. A few weeks ago I whipped down tot eh fish and chip shop and there were heaps of people around and I did exactly what you did. My little 600 was a little easier to hold up though and I didn't let it drop but when picking it up I overbalanced it the other way and then was swinging off it going .. shit shit shit.. as I struggled to not let it hit the ground. Got away with my one. Not sure I would have on a real bike.

I hear tell matt black is the correct colour for older faired m/c s.

nudemetalz

Nah, I'm going for an all-over blue like the ZZR-1400 colour. Make it look a little more modern, rather than the gay-80's colour scheme it has.

Now, got to go to the gym and do some bench-pressing to avoid a repeat experience.....

Phew! Had me worried with your thread title there nudemetalz! I'm glad it wasn't what the title initially had me thinking, but still, not the kind of thing you want to happen to you anyway! Just the motivation you need to make sure it gets all nicely repainted - hide the evidence! :niceone:

I'm glad my bike weighs bugger all, can let it lean over whilst holding it steady with one arm, and not worry about putting it down. No doubt that confidence will bite me in the arse one day! :kick:

Oh yes,...I reckon just about everyone who's been riding for more than a few years has stationary dropped it....your time will come Dev Esq ;) .....
However, the NZ-250 was dropped in my garage by the Missus and she never told me about it. Went to go to work one morning and "Hey, where's my brake lever gone and why is the RHS indicator hanging down?"...her response..."I was going to tell you but thought you might get mad...." so it's better to find out accidentally ay !!! Women logic !!!!!

Lol the look on his face tho hehe

I was pumping up my front tyre at the gassie one day and the next thing I knew....yep my blade was on its side. Damn side stands. Luckily no damage.

IIRC BMW's of old used to feature an auto retracting sidestand. As soon as you took a little weight off them up it came. Apparently caused a few problems if you didn't know about it....

Fortunately, when my VFR750 tried this trick, my father-in-law's car was there to catch it. Also fortunately, the VFR was unmarked. Unfortunately, the handlebar put a dent in his front mudguard that cost $500 to get taken out.

Lazy feckin thing - it was always trying to lie down for a rest.

My first ride out onmy own, took the bike for a blast out in the country, dropped it in the middle of an intersection!!!! Goddamn it!!!! Being a complete beginner I hadn't thought about what would happen if/when I dropped it. Had no idea how I was supposed to pick it up - and couldn't even when I tried (being a little girlie and all!!). Had to phone someone to drive out (45 minutes away) and help me pick it up!!!

Now that was embarrasing!!!!!! (Thank god no cars tried to get through that intersection!).

I've since learnt how to pick the wee thing up!

I'm glad you're okay. There is a definite art to picking up a motorcycle , esp if it's a heavy one.

It could have been worse, you could have dropped it at our place on Saturday - all that concrete to scratch it on!

I did a similar thing once on a previous bike - thankfully the fat thighs prevented anything other than a few minor scratches to the bike, but man, you should have seen the bruises I collected!

accidentally left scuffy in first the other day....put the stand down and was dismounting...let the clutch go and the bitch lept out from under me....luckily i already had my leg over so was able to get up underneath her to stop her dropping, but shit was she heavy....full tank and everything....

bout 5 mins later and enough begging for her to stand up on her own, i finally get her upright enough to force the stand down to hold her....not a single scratch...only damage was a tiny bit of scuffing to the foot peg

walked around shaking for a while from the struggle to get her up and then wobbled away to work....bit sore that day and lost a bit of gas due to the choke being out [thought id somehow made a hole somewhere!]

funny how when dropping a bike in a crowded place [like, not falling, but dropping] you suddenly have superman strength to be able to get her up again...lol.

had a similar accident the other day, i had done some work to my bike, went to take it for a test ride, got to the end of the street, looked left, then right, left again and leaned over to go only to stall her and then drop her on the right side:crazy: gutted!:crybaby:

That in Japan one of the requirements to ride a motorcycle is that you are able to pick it up, unaided from it lying on its side. Otherwise if you cannot do this then you may not ride it. I found this concept acceptable and thought I'd stick to it. Quite a few years ago I brought a 76 CB750 ex Police/MOT bike. Thing was extremely heavy and back then I was only about 72kg. Got it lying down on the frount lawn and gave it a go. Almost blew a poopoo valve picking the thing up. For some stoopid reason I decided to try it again after the initial success. There was no way I could do it again and needed a friend to help me pick it back up again. Did not have it much longer and would probably not buy one again, although I seem to be able to lift more than what I could lift back then.:weird:
