Well the lawnmower engine's shit itself. Blue-white smoke pouring out, and it keeps oiling up the plug really quickly.
My guess is the oil ring's gone, so I'm going to pull it apart and rebuild.
I'll rehone the bore, throw in some new compression and oil rings, and redo the gaskets. No bearings in these motors I've heard so should be a piece of cake.
I've been quoted some prices for these parts, which seem a bit pricey:
$82.00 ring set (2 x comp, 1 x oil)
$35.00 head & sump gaskets
$11 bottom seal
It's a B&S XTE55 5.5HP model 128802 type 1119.
Can anyone recommend a better source of parts, or this a good price?

Can't help ya on the prices but your post reminded me of the first time I saw the insides of an engine. Aged about 8, B&S 4hp engine on our go-kart, took it apart more times then I can remember.

The rings sound a bit pricey, but they are genuine B&S,not much after market for these things. They have an alloy bore,so careful on the honing - gentle glaze bust with a bottle brush hone on a cordless drill at low speed, lube with WD40 or some such.
My old B&S ripped up the bore after an oil change,it has a long crank and I can't find another.I'm getting bloody sick of jogging behind my screaming Victa 550 Pro.

I have the B&S (and Tecumpseh) workshop manuals on disk somewhere if that is any use.

Hey riffer, are you sure the motor hasn't been tipped on it's side, possibly for cleaning beneath the mower? The reason I ask is we used to get two a week that'd run oil in through the inlet valve, then when you tip 'em back over, it fills the carb and air filter with oil.
Side valve motors rule.

Interesting. I'll check it out Jimmy, but really, its an 11 year old mower and I probably should rebuild it anyway.
I always store it in the shed sitting normally. I plan to relap the valves when I pull it apart.
I guess mainly its an exercise in pulling it apart and checking it out - well actually its an excuse for my mate Zain and I to drink steinies and talk shit... well you know how it is ;)

Ditto! Was gonna suggest he just gets an 883 engine and chucks it on instead. They are about the same technology anyway.
