A difficult question. It was once axiomatic that a gentleman never raised a hand to a lady no matter what the provocation. But times change, and the liberated female of today is hardly the lady of yesterday. I am inclined to think that a female who actually throws a punch can scarely be termed a lady, and might more properly be described as a termagant, who has forfeited the considerations normally due to the gentler sex. In such case restraint by whatever means is appropriate may be justified.

Escalation doesnt solve anything. Zadok is right, if you can restrain, thats probably your best option. But if she comes at you again - your 1st priority is self defence; man, woman or "unclassified"; makes no difference IMO.

In a situation like this it's probably more important to weigh up the number of associates the assailant has with her and the number of other people around who may help you, rather than worry too much about the assailant's gender.
I believe that when it comes to street fights "one on one" isn't a high priority.
