Up untill now I've never had insurance on either my car or my bike. I haven't crashed so it hasn't really been a problem. It'd be naive to think that i'll never crash however, so I thought i'd at least look into getting insurance.

I got a few quotes for full cover which ranged from $700 to $1100, with some having better excess policies than others. At the moment this is more than i'm prepared to pay. I never asked about 3rd party only but i'm guessing it'd be somewhat cheaper. (is this correct?)

My question however was: If I get 3rd party insurance and don't claim for a couple of years, would I be able to transfer my no claims bonus over to full insurance. Then i'd be able to get full insurance for xx% of what I can get it for now. Is there even such thing as a no claims bonus on third party insurance?

Thanks,

CFS

Depends on Insurer.......some don't cause of lower premiums......

Ring Baker Insurance or try Barnes Jenkins.....I know owner so mention my name.................or contact CibbyChick 09 355 7339 (DDi)

Remember you can pay premium over 12 months in some cases so Full cover should still be considered....TPO just not worth risk with a bike.

as soon as you put house and contents with a company, they bend over backwards for you with vehicles etc.

Almost every company, in the process of insuring you, will ask if you've had insurance in your name in the past, and how long you've had it. They generally won't ask you if it was 3rd party or full cover, so the no claims bonus should apply to your new insurance if you've had 3rd party cover for a while.

I'd also recommend that you try BNZ (0800 ASK BNZ). They have very good premiums, and the added bonus of being a bank means that you actually have better protection through them than through an insurance company using the same under writer. That information straight from the horse's mouth - an under writer told me that one. Anyway you don't need to have a bank account with BNZ to have your insurance with them. Worth a phone call for a quote at any rate.

Hope this helps! :sweatdrop

It probably depends on how you ride cfs. By the sound of it you don't bin your bike regularly. Therefore if you had been paying for insurance up to now, it would have been a waste of money!!

I have both my bikes on 3rd party, the old one and the new one. If I had put the GB on full cover 18 years ago I would have paid for it twice over again just in insurance and never any cause to claim. The unexpected does happen and it doesn't have to be your fault and so 3rd party does allow for an insurance company to be involved when you need some backup (if they bother) if you need to chase someone who caused a ding. At my advanced age (it may not matter) 3rd party is about $30/year/bike.

Yeah third party costs fuck all, a pittance.

I'd just go for that.
